Il libro presenta, dopo due importanti saggi introduttivi di tipo filosofico e storico di Jacob Golomb e Andrea Orsucci, un'ampia selezione di passi tratti dalle principali opere, dai frammenti postumi e dalle lettere di Nietzsche sugli ebrei suoi contemporanei, gli antichi ebrei e gli antisemiti, e brani sull'ebraismo tratti dalle conversazioni di Nietzsche col medico viennese Joseph Paneth, amico di Freud. Viene così affrontata nel modo più diretto una questione cruciale, tuttora molto dibattuta e al centro di accese discussioni all'interno della ricerca internazionale su Nietzsche. Per quanto gli studiosi siano sostanzialmente d'accordo sul fatto che Nietzsche sia anti-antisemita, tuttavia la sua valutazione degli ebrei e dell'ebraismo appare molto controversa. In questa raccolta si è cercato di far parlare i testi stessi che molte volte hanno una forza e un'evidenza incontestabile, ma si è cercato anche di bilanciare per quanto possibile i giudizi più elogiativi con quelli più critici. I brani proposti sono accompagnati da introduzioni alle varie fasi e da una rete di note per ricostruirne il contesto; in particolare quelli più problematici (come quelli della "Genealogia della morale" e dell'"Anticristo") vengono ricondotti alle numerose letture di Nietzsche sui rapporti tra ebraismo e cristianesimo.‎

La scena perduta è un affresco reale e immaginato di simboli religiosi, d amore materno e sensuale. Dopo il successo di Il fuoco amico, lo scrittore e drammaturgo israeliano narra ancora una volta una storia di sentimenti contrastati in cui il rapporto di coppia è vissuto come una sorta di legame innaturale, non vincolato da legami sanguigni e per questo estremamente complesso. Il regista Yak Moses è a Santiago per una retrospettiva sul suo lavoro cinematografico, accompagnato dall attrice Ruth. Yak è ormai anziano, ma l amore e la passione per la donna protagonista di molti suoi film sono ancora molto forti. Il rapporto con l attrice è complesso e frammentato e Yehoshua lo rappresenta sia verbalmente sia attraverso l uso di una sorta di macchina da presa inserita nel racconto. Tutto però sembra andare per il meglio in questa specie di celebrazione del successo di una vita di Yak fino a quando l uomo non si accorge che nella sua stanza d albergo c è un quadro che lo turba: la rappresentazione fiamminga della carità romana. Nell affresco la giovane fanciulla Pero allatta il padre Cimone, chiuso in carcere e condannato a morire. Questo dipinto apparentemente innocuo dà il via ad una serie di tormenti interiori e di decisioni di Moses. Il regista ricorda infatti che la carità romana è un immagine iconografica che sarebbe dovuta apparire in uno dei suoi film più celebri e che Ruth si rifiutò di girare. Da quell episodio si scatenarono una serie di litigi con lo sceneggiatore di tutti i suoi film, Trigano, all epoca anche fidanzato di Ruth e ora proprio organizzatore della rassegna cinematografica dedicata a Yak. Cosa comporterà il ritorno dell uomo nelle loro vite? Sarà l occasione per una riconciliazione o il momento di una rottura definitiva? In questa sorta di epifania descritta da Yehoshua il non detto ci addolora e induce all autocritica il protagonista‎

Nonostante le discriminazioni che i nazisti impongono da subito agli ebrei, cerca di vivere normalmente la sua vita. Fino a quando il padre viene deportato a Buchenwald: Zdenka non lo rivedrà più. Nel 1942 viene deportata, insieme alla famiglia e al fidanzato Arno, a Terezín, un campo di concentramento a nord-ovest di Praga. Mentre Arno viene spedito in un campo a est, Zdenka vi rimane fino al 1944, quando viene «trasferita» ad Auschwitz: lei e la sorella Lydia sopravvivono alle selezioni, la madre no. Ma a questo punto le sorti della guerra si sono ribaltate, i russi incalzano e cominciano le terribili «marce della morte» verso ovest. Zdenka e Lydia transitano così da Kurzbach e poi dal famigerato campo di Gross-Rosen. E poi sono di nuovo «spostate» a Mauthausen e infine a Bergen-Belsen. Qui, dopo la morte della sorella, Zdenka viene infine liberata dagli inglesi, unica sopravvissuta della sua famiglia. Oggi, a 95 anni, Zdenka è impegnata a portare la sua testimonianza in giro per il mondo, perché tutto ciò che lei ha vissuto non sia dimenticato.‎

This study focuses on the pardons of the Hamidian era by using the petitions which were written by the convicts, accused people or their relatives to the Sublime Porte. Beside the lives, prison conditions and accusations of the convicts, the pardon petitions constitute a useful source to see the nature of the relationship between state and the ordinary people. This study argues that although requesting a pardon seems to have been a kind of obedience to the authority, the relationship established on pardons was established through bargains and negotiations. The process of granting pardons was an interactive one in which the actors negotiated on the conditions according to the position of supplicant. Also, the petitions allow us to see the debated characteristics of the Hamidian era from the eyes of the ordinary people. This study claims that the pardon was a state policy and it was especially applied during the Armenian Events of the 1890s, the banditry problem and tribal conflicts. Moreover, to gain the loyalties of the outlaws, to use them as informers and collaborate with them in the critical areas of the Empire, pardons were a step in allowing the state to make alliances without losing its prestige. Through the discretionary power of forgiveness, the Sultan tried to restore the monarchical ideology, namely the merciful image of Sultanic rule, which was a distinctive element of monarchical power. While granting pardons, the Abdülhamid regime expected from the convict less loyalty or regret than certain services, and active collaboration on particular issues - a tension which constituted the dynamics of the pardon negotiations.‎
