Briefe von Darwin. Mit Erinnerungen und Erlaeuterungen. i.e. English "Letters on Geology".

Entire volume: IV 480 pp. The Exceedingly rare first and only 19th century translation of Darwin's first published work "Letters on Geology" from 1835. The pamphlet was initially published without Darwin's consent and he was "a good deal horrified" when he learned about the publication which explains the posthumous translation. <br><br>The work contains extracts from ten letters written by Darwin to John Stevens Henslow 1796-1861 during his five-year voyage on the Beagle. Henslow the charismatic and well-connected Regis Professor of Botany at Cambridge was Darwin's close friend and first mentor in natural history and responsible for obtaining for Darwin his position as ship's naturalist aboard the Beagle. Henslow had this pamphlet printed without Darwin's knowledge for distribution amongst the members of the Cambridge Philosophical Society "in consequence of the interest which has been excited by some of the Geological notices which they contain and which were read at a Meeting of the Society on the 16th of November 1835" an act which secured Darwin's reputation with the scientific community even before his return to England in October 1836. <br><br>"It has always been assumed that it was issued to members of the Cambridge Philosophical Society in December 1835 and this is probably so but I have not seen a copy with a dated ownership inscription or accession stamp for that year" Freeman.<br>The original pamphlet was reprinted in facsimile in 1960 again for private circulation in the Cambridge Philosophical Society and for friends of that Society. Only two translations has been made: The present first and a Russian from 1959 Freeman 7.<br><br>Freeman No. 6. hardcover

QUINE WILLARD ORMAN VAN. THE INDETERMINACY OF TRANSLATION
Word and Object.
N.Y. Wiley & Sons 1960. 8vo. Orig. olive green full cloth w. gilt and black lettering and blindstamped seal to front board. A bit of soiling to spine and minor soiling to boards and minor bumping to capitals and corners. Some underlinings and marginal notes all in pencil. Cont owner's inscription to front free endpaper: "Eivind Storheim/ Cambridge 25/9 1962." XV 1 294 pp. First edition of Quine's main work in which he introduces the notorious indeterminacy of translation thesis. This is the most philosophical of all of Quine's works and it has greatly affected the development of logic philosophy of language and mathematics and analytic philosophy in general.<br><br>It is in this work that Quine propounds his "indeterminacy of translation"-thesis which became central in the development of philosophy of language. "Language is a social art. In acquiring it we have to depend on intersubjectively available cues such as to what to say and when. Hence there is no justification for collating linguistic meanings unless in terms of men's dispositions to respond overtly to socially observable stimulations." Preface p. IX.<br><br>By considering the linguist who attempts to translate a hitherto unknown language. There are different methods that the linguist could apply as to the breaking down of sentences and distribution of function among the words. Quine reaches the conclusion that if any hypothesis of translation needs to be defended this can only be by appeal to context by determining what other sentences the language user would utter in the language that is unknown to the linguist. But even here the indeterminacy of translation sets in because according to Quine any hypothesis can be defended if only enough other hypotheses of other parts of the language are adopted. <br>This indeterminacy of language also applies to the known languages and even one's own and thus Quine implies that there are no such entities as "meanings" of right and wrong. Quine thus denies any absolute standards in translating one language into another but he admits that there are good and bad translation -this is just not philosophically or logically relevant. Translation can be inconsistent with behavioral evidence however and thus Quine propounds his pragmatic view of translation. <br><br>"Neurath has likened science to a boat which if we are to rebuild it we must rebuild plank by plank while staying afloat in it. The philosopher and the scientist are in the same boat. If we improve our understanding of ordinary talk of physical things it will not be by reducing that talk to a more familiar idiom; there is none. It will be by clarifying the connections causal or otherwise between ordinary talk of physical things and various further matters which in turn we grasp with the help of ordinary talk of physical things." SARTRE JEAN PAUL. FIRST DANISH TRANSLATION OF ONE OF SARTRE'S TWO MAIN PHILOSOPHICAL WORKS
Eksistentialisme er humanisme. Oversat fra den franske originaludgave L'existentialisme est un humanisme af Anders Thuborg.
Kbenhavn Kronos 1946. Lille 4to. Ubesk. i orig. omsl. Foromslag en anelse flamet for oven. Et nydeligt rent og friskt eksempler. 122 2 pp.<br><br>Small 4to. Uncut in the orig. wrappers. Minor fading to top of front wrapper. A very nice clean and fresh copy. 122 2 pp. Originaludgaven af den frste danske oversttelse af det andet af Sartres to filosopfiske hovedvrker som begge udvede stor indflydelse p det 20. rhundredes filosofi og bidrog vsentligt til udviklingen af eksistentialismen. Den danske oversttelse er trykt samme r som originalen og udgr formentlig den nydeligste udgave typografisk set. Vrket er trykt srdeles nydeligt med brede marginer og p godt papir. <br><br>The first edition of the first Dansih translation of the second of Sartre's two main philosophical works which have both influenced 20th century philosophy greatly and contributed immensely to the development of existentialism in general. The Danish translation is printed the same year as the French first edition and typographically probably constitutes the best edition. It is a very nice print with wide margins and on good thick paper. <br><br>"Existentialism is a Humanism" became one of Sartre's most widely read and most critcized works and it caused great controversies and uproar at the time of its appearance; -as opposed to his "L'tre et le Nant" all of Sartre's critics actually read this work and so did huge parts of the population causing the book to appear in huge numbers after the publication of the first edition.<br>The work is the literary re-working of an exposition given by Sartre at a conference in October 1945 where he caused a scandalous discussion which among other things led to the fact that all references to the existentialist T.E. Lawrence were omitted from the work when it appeared in print. Contat & Rybalka p. 132. Sartre himself also disowned great parts of this work which makes it all the more interesting since it is the only one of his works of which he has done so. <br><br>The work was reprinted numerous times during the first years and the first edition on vellum-paper is very difficult to come by. hardcover

PUSCHKIN ALEXANDER. PUSHKIN. FIRST TRANSLATION INTO GERMAN OF PUSHKIN'S MAIN WORKS
Dichtungen. Aus dem Russischen bersetzt von Dr. Robert Lippert. 2 Bde. With the first German translation of "Eugene Onegin".
Leipzig Engelmann 1840. Bound in a beautiful contemporary half calf binding with gilt ornamentations and blindstamping to spine a Danish binding from ab. 1840 typical of how Kierkegaard had his bindings made presumably by one of the book binders that he used. A bit of wear to spine and corners bumped. Stamp from a library in Bergen to title-pages. Internally very clean and fresh. Bound with half-titles and all four leaves of advertisements. A very fine copy. <br><br>With the old ownership-signature of N.B. Krarup as well as of H.P. Kierkegaard Sren Kierkegaard's cousin to front free end-paper. H.P. Kierkegaard has furthermore written that he bought the copy at the auction after Dr. Krarup on the 4th of May 1843. The scarce first edition of Lippert's famous translation into German of Pushkin's "Poems" which contains several of Pushkin's major poetical works translated into German for the first time e.g. "Yevgeniy Onegin" Eugene Onegin "The Gypsies" "The Fountain of Bakhchisaray" "The Robber Brothers" "Poltava" "Count Nulin" "the Stone Guest" etc.<br><br>Much of Pushkin's work became known in Germany through the present edition of poems which is thus in large part responsible for the great role that Pushkin came to play in Germany during the middle and second half of the 19th century.<br><br>Pushkin is probably the most important and beloved of Russian writers and is generally accepted as the founder of modern Russian literature. What Shakespeare is to the English and Goethe to the Germans so Puschkin is to the Russians. He is universally accepted as Russia's greatest writer. <br><br>"Eugene Onegin" is generally considered one of Puschkin's main works and a classic of not only Russian but world literature. The work was originally published in Russian in serial form between 1825 and 1832. The first complete edition was published in 1833 and the present first German edition thus appeared seven years later. The first English translation only appeared much later and it has been so difficult to translate into English that it never came to have the same impact on British literature as it did on German; it remained virtually unknown to the English speaking countries for decades. Vladimir Nabokov who undertook the translation of the work into English was forced to make fill 2 full volumes although it is merely 100 pages long. <br>Although literary critics often refer to the drama "The Stone Guest" also present here in the first German translation as one of his absolute masterpieces it is the verse novel "Eugene Onegin" on which Pushkin worked throughout his life that he himself considered his magnum opus. The work initiated a tradition of great Russian novels and is one of the most influential works of the 19th century.<br> <br>It is the present edition of Puschkin's Poems that Nietzsche had in his private library. unknown

Fray Diego Duran's History of the Indies of New Spainnewly translated by Doris Heyden is a vivid evocation of the Aztec world before the Spanish conquest. It also tells of the common people who were forbidden to wear feathers jade or cotton or to enter the palace. Duran chronicles daily life in times in times of war and in times of flood and drought when people sold their children for a handful of corn. Constant warfare yielded tribute of gold jade feathers exotic foods and most important captives who died on the sacrificial stone their hearts offered to the sun. Duran traces the history of the Aztecs from their mythic origins to the destruction of the empire when bearded strangers came from the east in "houses floating on the water." SOPHOCLES; A VERSE TRANSLATION BY MULROY DAVID WITH INTRODUCTION & NOTES
Oedipus Rex
University of Wisconsin Press Madison: 2011. Softcover. Brand new book. Oedipus Rex is the greatest of the Greek tragedies a profound meditation on the human condition. The story of the mythological king who is doomed to kill his father and marry his mother has resonated in world culture for almost 2500 years. But Sophocles' drama as originally performed was much more than a great storyit was a superb poetic script and exciting theatrical experience. The actors spoke in pulsing rhythms with hypnotic forward momentum making it hard for audiences to look away. Interspersed among the verbal rants and duels were energetic songs performed by the chorus. David Mulroy's brilliant verse translation of Oedipus Rex recaptures the aesthetic power of Sophocles' masterpiece while also achieving a highly accurate translation in clear contemporary English. Speeches are rendered with the same kind of regular iambic rhythm that gave the Sophoclean originals their drive. The choral parts are translated as fluid rhymed songs. Mulroy also supplies an introduction notes and appendixes to provide helpful context for general readers and students. David Mulroy is professor of classics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He has translated The Complete Poetry of Catullus also published by the University of Wisconsin Press. Sophocles ca. 497/6-407/6 BCE was the most acclaimed dramatist of his era winning more than twenty festival competitions in ancient Athens. He is believed to have written 123 plays but only seven have survived in a complete form. "A great work of world literature has at last become a great poem in English. Mulroy's translation is far superior to other available English verse translations." Robert J. MIRTO MARIA SERENA; OSBORNE A M TRANSLATION
Death In The Greek World: From Homer To The Classical Age
University of Oklahoma Press Norman: . Softcover. Brand new book. In our contemporary Western society death has become taboo. Despite its inevitability we focus on maintaining youthfulness and well-being while fearing death's intrusion in our daily activities. In contrast observes Maria Serena Mirto the ancient Greeks embraced death more openly and effectively developing a variety of rituals to help them grieve the dead and in the process alleviate anxiety and suffering. In this fascinating book Mirto examines conceptions of death and the afterlife in the ancient Greek world revealing few similaritiesand many differencesbetween ancient and modern ways of approaching death. Exploring the cultural and religious foundations underlying Greek burial rites and customs Mirto traces the evolution of these practices during the archaic and classical periods. She explains the relationship between the living and the dead as reflected in grave markers epitaphs and burial offerings and discusses the social and political dimensions of burial and lamentation. She also describes shifting beliefs about life after death showing how concepts of immortality depicted so memorably in Homer's epics began to change during the classical period. Death in the Greek World straddles the boundary between literary and religious imagination and synthesizes observations from archaeology visual art philosophy politics and law. The author places particular emphasis on Homer's epics the first literary testimony of an understanding of death in ancient Greece. And because these stories are still so central to Western culture her discussion casts new light on elements we thought we had already understood. Originally written and published in Italian this English-language translation of Death in the Greek World includes the most recent scholarship on newly discovered texts and objects and engages the latest theoretical perspectives on the gendered roles of men and women as agents of mourning. The volume also features a new section dealing with hero cults and a new appendix outlining fundamental developments in modern studies of death in the ancient Greek world. BURKHART LOUISE M INTRODUCTION; SELL BARRY D TRANSLATION; POOLE STAFFORD TRANSLATION
Aztecs On Stage: Religious Theater In Colonial Mexico
University of Oklahoma Press Norman: . Softcover. Brand new book. Nahuatl drama one of the most surprising results of the Catholic presence in colonial Mexico merges medieval European religious theater with the language and performance traditions of the Aztec Nahua people of central Mexico. Franciscan missionaries seeking effective tools for evangelization fostered this new form of theater after observing the Nahuas' enthusiasm for elaborate performances. The plays became a controversial component of native Christianity allowing Nahua performers to present Christian discourse in ways that sometimes effected subtle changes in meaning. The Indians' enthusiastic embrace of alphabetic writing enabled the use of scripts but the genre was so unorthodox that Spanish censors prevented the plays' publication. As a result colonial Nahuatl drama survives only in scattered manuscripts most of them anonymous some of them passed down and recopied over generations. Aztecs on Stage presents accessible English translations of six of these seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Nahuatl plays. All are based on European dramatic traditions such as the morality and passion plays; indigenous actors played the roles of saints angels devilsand even the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. Louise M. Burkhart's engaging introduction places the plays in historical context while stage directions and annotations in the works provide insight into the Nahuas' production practices which often incorporated elaborate sets props and special effects including fireworks and music. The translations facilitate classroom readings and performances while retaining significant artistic features of the Nahuatl originals. University of Oklahoma Press, Norman: paperback

CAILLOIS ROGER; BARASH MEYER TRANSLATION FROM FRENCH
Man Play And Games
University of Illinois Press Urbana and Chicago: 2001. Softcover. Brand new book. According to Roger Caillois play is "an occasion of pure waste: waste of time energy ingenuity skill and often of money." In spite of this--or because of it--play constitutes an essential element of human social and spiritual development. In this classic study Caillois defines play as a free and voluntary activity that occurs in a pure space isolated and protected from the rest of life. Play is uncertain since the outcome may not be foreseen and it is governed by rules that provide a level playing field for all participants. In its most basic form play consists of finding a response to the opponent's action--or to the play situation--that is free within the limits set by the rules. Caillois qualifies types of games-- according to whether competition chance simulation or vertigo being physically out of control is dominant--and ways of playing ranging from the unrestricted improvisation characteristic of children's play to the disciplined pursuit of solutions to gratuitously difficult puzzles. Caillois also examines the means by which games become part of daily life and ultimately contribute to various cultures their most characteristic customs and institutions. Presented here in Meyer Barash's superb English translation Man Play and Games is a companion volume to Caillois's Man and the Sacred. Roger Caillois 1913-78 a French philosopher and writer was a cofounder of France's pathbreaking Collge de Sociologie pour l'tude du Sacr and the founding editor of Diogenes the journal of the International Council for Philosophy and Humanistic Studies. Getty Research Institute Los Angeles: 2015. Softcover. Brand new book. Principles of Art History by 1864-1945 a revolutionary attempt to construct a science of art through the study of the development of style has been a foundational work of formalist art history since it was first published in 1915. Gypsy Music In European Culture: From The Late Eighteenth To The Early Twentieth Centuries
University Press of New England: . Softcover. Brand new book. A history and typology of the impact of Gypsy music on Europe Translated from the Polish Anna G. Piotrowska's Gypsy Music in European Culture details the profound impact that Gypsy music has had on European culture from a broadly historical perspective. The author begins by identifying two models of discourse on Gypsy music: those of assimilation as in the national music of Hungary and Spain and nonassimilating types which often fall into racial stereotypes and associations with the exotic. Using these broad typologies as a jumping-off point she then details the stimulating influence that Gypsy music had on a variety of European musical forms including opera vaudeville ballet and vocal and instrumental compositions. The author analyzes the use of Gypsy themes and idioms in the music of recognized giants such as Bizet Strauss and Paderewski detailing the composers' use of scale form motivic presentations and rhythmic tendencies and also discusses the impact of Gypsy music on emerging national musical forms. This is the first comprehensive treatment of Gypsy musical forms and their impact on European musical taste and styles from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries and will be welcomed by scholars and students in ethnomusicology anthropology cultural studies and the history of music.
