Bind fine; hinges intact. Fitzgerald's rendition has more admirers today than ever before and stands as a monument to the translator's art. Sharp very good example of this rare illustrated edtion from Thomas Y. Crowell of New York. Apprx. 100 pages. Insured post. In eleventh century Persia there lived a mathematician named Ghiyathuddin Abulfath Omar bin Ibrahim al-Khayyami - or Omar Khayyam son of Abraham the tent-maker. Omar wrote poetry and while his rhymes received scant attention in their day they were discovered and translated into beautiful English more than seven centuries later by a gentleman and scholar named Edward FitzGerald. It was a meeting of minds a great collaboration of the past and the present and FitzGerald's rendition of those passionate verses has become one of the most loved poem cycles in the English language. With their concern for the here and now as opposed to the hereafter Omar Khayyam's quatrains are as romantic today as they were hundreds of years ago. They are a tribute to the power of one moment's pleasure over a lifetime of sorrow of desire over the vicissitudes of time. Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam presented here with Edward FitzGerald's original preface is truly a classic and it will stand forever as one of our finest monuments to love. Omar Khayyam May 18 1048 - December 4 1131 was a Persian mathematician astronomer philosopher and poet. He was born in Nishabur in northeastern Persia and spent most of his life near the court of the Karakhanid and Seljuq rulers in the period which witnessed the First Crusade. As a mathematician he is most noted for the classification and solution of cubic equations where he provided geometric solutions. As an astronomer he designed the Jalali calendar a solar calendar with a precise thirty-three year cycle. There is a tradition of attributing poetry to Omar Khayyam written in the form of quatrains. This poetry became widely known to the English-reading world in a translation by Edward FitzGerald Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam 1859 which enjoyed great success in the Orientalism of the fin de sicle. . First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Illus. by Pogany Willy. 8vo - over 7 - 9" Tall. Book. Thomas Y. Crowell & Co. Hardcover

Ignc Knos was a Hungarian linguist turkologist folklorist a correspondent member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and one of the most recognised scholars of the Turkish folk literature and dialectology. From preface: The stories comprising this collection have been culled with my own hands in the many-hued garden of Turkish folklore. They have not been gathered from books for Turkey is not a literary land and no books of the kind exist; but an attentive listener to "the storytellers" who form a peculiar feature of the social life of the Ottomans I have jotted them down from time to time and now present them a choice bouquet to the English reading public. The stories are such as may be heard daily in the purlieus of Stamboul in the small rickety houses of that essentially Turkish quarter of Constantinople where around the tandir the native women relate them to their children and friends. This volume is a treasure chest of classic Eastern tales drawing on the rich folklore of Turkey. Forty-four Turkish Fairy Tales has not been in print for almost 100 years mainly because the original edition had lavish production standards. On the used market mint copies of the 1913 original can cost up to four figures. This volume is appropriately titled Fairy Tales because something definitely 'fairy' occurs. There are talking animals flying horses birds that magically change into beautiful maidens quests to win the hand of a princess magical objects simple yet brave peasants wizards witches dragons and dungeons epic journeys and loveable fools. The majority of these stories contain encounters with 'Dews' or Turkish supernatural beings better known in the West as 'Genies.' Sometimes the Turkish Dews are also called 'Arabs!' There are many other specifically Turkish elements and references in the stories for which the glossary at the end of the book is of particular help. So this isn't simply an orientalised set of European Tales but was drawn from an authentic Turkish oral storytelling tradition by Dr. Igncz Knos. Plus there are almost 200 illustrations exquisitely crafted by Willy Pogany. Willy Pogany 1882-1955 was a prolific Hungarian book illustrator best known for his pen and ink drawings of myths and fables. A large portion of Pogany's work can be termed Art Nouveau. Pogany's artistic style is heavily fairy-tale orientated and often features motifs of mythical animals such as nymphs and pixies. His dreamy colour illustrations are exemplified by the tipped-in plates in this volume but his pen and ink drawings also portray the extent of his talent. Here the poetical text is majestically illustrated with the ethereal imagery of Willy Pogany. A rare and beautifully crafted book. 363 pages. Insured post. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair. Illus. by Pogany Willy. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. Book. George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd. Hardcover

Hopelessly in love with the seductive and flamboyant Lady Brett Ashley Jake leaves Paris to accompany Brett her drunken fianc and an American boxer to Pamplona watching as she falls for a young bullfighter. The expatriate crowd that Hemingway portrays so vividly passes their lives in an aimless alcoholic haze against which the local fiestas and the running of the bulls seem by contrast full of vitality--a quality that is alien to them. The settings are romantic - the bull ring the Paris streets the bars cafs and hotels - but Hemingway invests them all with a disillusion that undercuts the glamour of expatriate life. 265 pages. Dj some edge wear rub; protected in new clear sleeve. Enchanting and colorful wrap-around jacket painting depicts gondola guided by helmsman through tunnel of bridge silhouetted Venice and orange sunset in background. Summary in Spanish at front flap. Ernest Hemingway's first novel in a decade - since For Whom the Bell Tolls - holds the essential emotion of that phenomenally successful book. In 'Across the River and into the Trees' there is a concept of the same intensity. Like the story of the Spanish civil war which was centered upon a microcosm of action - the tense last days of an American in the midst of a group of guerrilla fighters this story limits its scope to a very short span in the life of an American. This story builds its bridge not of days but of hours and it is even more charged with feeling. For many readers it will evoke a memorable earlier novel A Farewell to Arms because the background again is Italy and again it is war. This newer war however is already in the past. The fighting is over; the reader hears only its echoes. Venice is the scene. Colonel Richard Cantwell of the United States Army is the principal figure and perhaps the most complex character Hemingway ever presented. Hemingway said of his novel ". start slow then increase in pace till it becomes impossible to stand. I bring emotion up to where you cant stand it then we level off so we wont have to provide oxygen tents for the readers." - The New Yorker 1950. 3/4" x 7 3/4" design. 322 pages. Insured post.
