‎The mere mention of Mario Testino?s name evokes a rush of adrenalin in anyone that cares, even a bit, about the worlds of fashion, glamour, and celebrity. So omnipresent is he at fashion events, magazine shoots, and A-list parties that he has become a celebrity himself. This book documents Testino?s privileged access to the bold and beautiful with a dazzling selection of his best studio work as well as candid spontaneous shots: a beaming Gwyneth Paltrow clutching her freshly-won Oscar, a fur-cloaked Jennifer Lopez atop a commode, and unforgettable royal portraits including Diana, Princess of Wales and her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. Top advertising and fashion work as well as contributions from Graydon Carter, Karl Lagerfeld, Jennifer Allen, and Patrick Kinmonth makes this a must-have collector?s item for any art or fashion lover?s library.‎

‎Sch tte studied at the art academy in D sseldorf from 1973 to 1981 with Fritz Schwegler and Gerhard Richter. In his work he shows a surprising versatility in both the techniques used and the design. He made models, but also drawings, etchings and sometimes very extensive sculptures. In 1998, Sch tte made the sculpture group 'Three gross figures for Utrecht' for the Griftpark in Utrecht, made of Corten steel. The statues are approximately three and a half meters high. Sch tte created the images using an improvisational method. He first sketched the images in wax.[3] After his breakthrough in 1992 with his work "Die Ankunft der Fremden" during documenta IX in Kassel, the Venice Biennale in 2005 was another highlight in his career. There he was awarded the prize for the best artist of the exhibition. At the end of 2007, a work by Sch tte was chosen for the fourth pillar on Trafalgar Square in London. His bronze sculpture United Enemies was exhibited in New York's Central Park between March 5 and August 25, 2013.‎

‎King Alfred the Great (r. 871-899) remains a key figure in English literary history. Although his reputation as a scholar who was personally responsible for the translation of a number of Latin works is no longer secure, the figure of the wise king nevertheless casts a long shadow over vernacular writing from the late ninth century through to the twelfth. This volume takes stock of recent developments and debates in the field of Alfredian scholarship and showcases new directions in research. Individual chapters consider how English authors before, during, and after Alfred's reign translated and adapted Latin works, often in innovative and imaginative ways. Other contributions provide new contexts and connections for Alfredian writing, highlighting the work of Mercian scholars and expanding the corpus beyond the works traditionally attributed to the king himself. Together, these essays force us to rethink what we mean by 'Alfredian' and to revise the literary history of the 'long ninth century'.‎

‎A radical re-examination of 2,500 years of European art, deconstructing and demystifying its long history from ancient to present How has art evolved from the pursuit of the ?ideal? human form to a black square on a white canvas? Why is a banana duct-taped to a wall worth more on the art market than a beautiful seventeenth-century landscape? By taking art for what it actually is ? a piece of stone or wood, a sheet of paper with some lines drawn on it, a painted canvas ? this lively and accessible account shows how seemingly meaningless objects can be transformed into celebrated works of art. Breaking with conventional notions of artistic genius, Koenraad Jonckheere explores how stories and emotions give meaning to objects, and why changing historical circumstances result in such shifting opinions over time. Tracing its story from ancient times to present, A New History of Western Art reframes the evolution of European art and radically reshapes our understanding of art history.‎

Thanks to diffuse light and subtle brushstrokes - comparable to the shallow focus in cinematography - the Belgian artist's oeuvre is bathed in nostalgia and melancholy. Inspired by film, literature, poetry, and music, Vertenten recovers existing images from various sources, which he transforms into a completely new character study of life and humanity: loneliness, weakness, intimacy, desire and security. The viewer, touched by the beauty of the painting, is invited to explore the image in its new context. The heavy, dark tones in the image correspond to the weight of life. They come alive and flicker in contrast to the painterly highlights that function as symbolic points of light.‎

‎Translation Automatisms in the Vernacular Texts of the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 528 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:1 col., 1 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503600338.‎

‎Summary The volume deals with the issue of translation automatisms in early vernacular texts predating 1650. It introduces the novel concept of ?translation clusters', first defined in machine translation theory, but equally considering a wider array of situations that involve ?translation units', ?language automatisms', ?culturemes', and ?formulaic borrowings' in vernacular texts. Contrary to contemporary languages, where translation units, clusters, and automatisms appear frequently due to the influence of standard language varieties or dialects, the vernacular idioms of the Middle Ages and Early Modern period are often pluricentric. Consequently, automatisms are limited to specific cases where diachronic, diatopic, diastratic, and diaphasic variants align similarly in two otherwise different translations. This is a crucial topic for philology, as it can explain accidents that ecdotic methods tend to mistake for variant readings of a single ?redactio'. The volume aims to determine the organic interplay between three primary situations in which common coincidences between translations or texts occur. Firstly the volume explores the shared elements resulting from the transfer of textual units between multiple translations or adaptations (quotations, corrections, formulas). Secondly chapters study the shared elements arising from the existence of a common source text (translation clusters, based on translation units); and lastly, the volume questions the fixed, inherent, and unchangeable aspects of the target language (language automatisms, often coinciding with translation units). The chapters of this volume focus on numerous vernacular languages and a multitude of case studies, with a particular emphasis on biblical translation?a cornerstone of contemporary translation studies. The chapter format encourages diverse perspectives to push the boundaries of philology, translation studies, and ?vernacular theologies?.‎

‎Art in Iceland is as young as it is exciting. Considering the fact that Icelandic culture is strongly oriented toward language, the visual arts did not begin developing until the early twentieth century. This situation, which is remarkable for a Western country, may explain the unique nature of the contemporary art scene in Iceland. Even though international Conceptual Art continues to exercise a considerable influence and globalization is affecting this island in the North Atlantic, Icelandic art is nevertheless marked by a very specific creative energy and the pleasure of experimentation, and it has produced a large number of outstanding artists. Icelandic Art Today introduces fifty important protagonists of contemporary art , among them Finnbogi P tursson, Gabr ela Fridriksd ttir, Helgi Thorgils Fr dj nsson, Icelandic Love Corporation, Katr n Sigurdard ttir, Margr t H. ‎Writing Holiness. Genre and Reception across Medieval Hagiography‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 281 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503601984.‎

‎Summary Writing Holiness contributes to exciting new critical conversations in the study of medieval hagiography in Western Christianity. Recent years have seen innovative approaches to the literatures of sanctity through emergent theoretical discourses, such as disability studies and trans theory. At the same time, traditional methodologies such as manuscript studies and reception history continue to generate new perspectives on the production, circulation, and reception of the sacred textual canon. Through ten unique contributions that draw from both new and established theories and methodologies, this volume charts the development, movement, and reception of Christian hagiographic texts in localities ranging from the Iberian Peninsula to the Scandinavian Archipelago from the early to the late Middle Ages. Each chapter traces hagiographic development over generic, temporal, cultural, and linguistic boundaries, and considers the broader contours of the sacred imaginary that come into view as a result of such critically intersectional inquiry. ‎Lamp design is a field that continues to attract great attention, from both designers and design aficionados. With Poul Henningsen's iconic PH-lamp as its point of departure the book tells the stories behind 100 Danish lamp designs through text and images, and introduces the reader to the inventions that enabled the first revolutionizing light sources. Lighting is a key element in 'hygge' - the Danish definition of a warm and cosy ambience. Although hard-core functionalists like Henningsen called for form to follow function, real-life factors required them to compromise, and this came to define Danish lamp design: hygge is a crucial quality that had to be included in the design. Thus, the purpose of the modern Danish lamp was- and is - not only to provide light but also to act as a decorative element and to spread a cosy ambience.‎

‎Medieval Glossaries from North-Western Europe. Tradition and Innovation‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 762 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:25 b/w, 11 col., 16 tables b/w., Language: English.* NEW ISBN 9782503584577.‎

‎Summary Glossaries are the dictionaries of the medieval period. They were created at a time when no comprehensive dictionary of the Latin language existed, but lexicographical resources were urgently needed to engage with the writings of Classical and Late Antiquity as well as near-contemporary texts. In the non-Romance speaking areas in north-western Europe, the compilers of glossaries were quick to have recourse to their vernacular languages. Glossaries are often the places in which these languages were put into writing for the first time. Hence, the effort to explain Latin vocabulary resulted in bilingual lexicography and in the establishment of the vernaculars as written languages in their own right. The negotiation of linguistic and cultural barriers lies at the centre of the glossaries. Consequently, medieval traditions of glossography are highly interconnected. This volume represents the first reference work dedicated to medieval glossaries in English and related traditions, including other languages spoken in the British Isles (Celtic languages, Anglo-Norman) and the Germanic languages (High and Low German, Dutch, Scandinavian, Gothic). As such, it is intended as a vademecum for researchers in order to facilitate modern approaches to medieval glossography, lexicology and lexicography, which often require some familiarity with different traditions. Written by experts in the field, the fifty chapters of this volume highlight important characteristics and themes of medieval glossaries and outline different glossographic traditions; they facilitate access to individual glossaries, or groups of related glossaries, by providing detailed discussions of the texts, their sources, relationships and transmission; they also give an account of the current state of research and highlight important resources. ‎Medieval Translations and their Readers‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 364 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:17 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503591902.‎

‎Summary The papers gathered in this volume focus on 'Medieval Translations and their Readership', the special strand of the 11th Cardiff Conference on the Theory and Practice of Translation in the Middle Ages. The volume discusses the role of the reader in the process of translation, communities of readers and their active participation in translators' choices, and the translation as a result of a dialogue between author, text and its reader. Translations of works of theology and religious education, the focus of most of the contributions to this volume, constitute excellent material for research into medieval lay audiences. Vernacular religious educational texts from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century show a great deal of conformity. Individual authors resorted to similar strategies and techniques to meet any translation challenges, to fulfil educational aims, or to relate to their readers and to accommodate their expectations. Simultaneously, the readers played a crucial role as they shaped the production of texts in many ways. Research into Middle English pastoral and devotional literature and the conditions of its production still dominates scholarly work in the field. Religious texts in vernaculars other than Middle English have so far received little attention. This volume tries to tackle this lacuna by offering a careful comparative analysis of relevant vernacular texts across Europe, including Slavonic works, using historiographical, philological, and linguistic methods as well as literary scholarly approaches. The sixteen chapters are organized in three sections. The first one, 'Authors and Readers', brings together articles examining the idea of a model reader as expressed in translations of biblical texts and texts of religious instruction. The contributions in the second section, on the 'Dissimination of Knowledge', focus on how translators addressed readers, how people read, and how they used the manuscripts and printed books made for them. The target audience or model reader of the first section is here put into perspective with the help of discussions of reading practices. The last section, 'Religious Education in Transition', comprises contributions which focus on textual material from the period when printed books gradually changed, the relationship between languages, texts, authors, and readers. ‎Languages and Cross-Cultural Exchanges in Renaissance Italy‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 433 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:6 b/w, 8 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503601816.‎

‎Summary Although much work has been done in the field of Renaissance Studies, at present there is no book which offers a comparative overview of the linguistic interaction between Renaissance Italy and the wider world. The present volume is intended to fill this void, representing the first-ever collection of essays that deal with multiple types of language contact and cross-cultural exchanges in and with respect to Renaissance Italy (1300?1600). We bring diverse disciplinary perspectives together: literary scholars, historians, and linguists with different regional expertise; we argue for multilingualism and language contact as products of a period of dynamic change which cannot be fully grasped through a single framework. The contributions present a variety of case-studies by often cross-fertilising their approaches with other disciplinary lenses. This book aims to provide a comprehensive picture of a truly global Renaissance Italy where languages, textual traditions, and systems of knowledge from different geographical areas either combined or clashed. It takes a fresh approach to the history of late medieval and early modern Italy by focusing on East/West linguistic and cultural encounters, transmission of ideas and texts, multilingualism in literature (various genres and various forms of multilingualism), translation practices, reception/adaptation of new knowledge, transculturalism and literary exchanges, and the relationship between languages and language varieties. ‎Narratives on Translation across Eurasia and Africa. From Babylonia to Colonial India‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 406 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 b/w, 5 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503594897.‎

‎Summary What has driven acts of translation in the past, and what were the conditions that shaped the results? In this volume, scholars from across the humanities interrogate narratives on the process of translation: by historical translators ranging from ancient Babylonia to early modern Japan and the British Empire, and by academics from the nineteenth to the twentieth centuries who interpreted these translators' practices. In Part 1 the volume authors reflect on the history of the approaches to the phenomenon of translation in their specific fields of competence in order to learn what shaped the academic questions asked, what theoretical and practical tools were deployed, which arguments were privileged, and why certain kinds of evidence (but not others) were thought to be the basis for understanding the function and purpose of all translation performed in a given culture. Part II explores how translators and authors from antiquity to modern times described their own motivations and the circumstances in which they chose to translate. In both parts, the contributors disentangle histories of translation from the specialized intellectual fields (such as science, religion, law, or literature) with which they have been bound in order to make the case that we understand translation best when we take into account all cultural practices and translation activities cutting synchronically and diachronically through the entire societal fabric. ‎Learning to be Noble in the Middle Ages. Moral Education in North-Western Europe‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 295 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:4 b/w, 5 col., Language(s):English, Old French, Middle High German. ISBN 9782503595009.‎

‎Summary This book explores for the first time the moral education of the Western European nobility in the high Middle Ages. The medieval nobility created and utilized values and ideals such as chivalry and courtliness to legitimize their exalted position in society, and these values were largely the same across Europe. Noble codes of conduct communicated these ideals in everyday interactions and symbolic acts at court that formed the basis of European courtly society. This book asks how noble men and women were taught about morality and good conduct and how the values of their society were disseminated. While a major part of moral education took place in person, this period also produced a growing corpus of writing on the subject, in both Latin and the vernacular languages, addressing audiences that encompassed the lay elites from kings to the knightly class, men as well as women. Participation in this teaching became a distinguishing feature of the nobility, who actively promoted their moral superiority through their self-fashioning as they evolved into a social class. This book brings together analyses of several major European didactic texts and miscellanies, examining the way nobles learned about norms and values. Investigating the didactic writings of the Middle Ages helps us to better understand the role of moral education in the formation of class, gender, and social identities, and its long-term contribution to a shared European aristocratic culture. ‎Language Commonality and Literary Communities in Early Modern England. Translation, Transmission, Transfer‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 297 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:12 b/w, 2 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503598147.‎

‎Summary In the early modern period, the humanist practice of translation of sacred as well as secular texts created new readerships in the vernacular for authoritative texts, religious or classical. As the circulation of languages within Europe reshuffled hierarchies between classical languages and vernacular tongues, transmission via translation was not only vertical, but also horizontal, and the contacts between European languages enabled the expansion of local lexicons from sources other than Latin or Greek. This volume focuses on the role of translation and lexical borrowing in the expansion of specific English lexicons (erudite, technical, or artisanal) as evidenced in printed texts from the early modern period. It considers how language shapes identity in social, religious, philosophical, artistic, and literary contexts, and is in turn shaped by claims of social, religious, philosophical, artistic, and literary identity. ‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 443 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503583822.‎

‎Summary John Wyclif (d. 1384), famous Oxford philosopher-theologian and controversialist, was posthumously condemned as a heretic at the Council of Constance in 1415. Wyclif's influence was pan-European and had a particular impact on Prague, where Jan Hus, from Charles University, was his avowed disciple and the leader of a dissident reformist movement. Hus, condemned to the stake at Constance, gathered around him a prolific circle of disciples who changed the landscape of late medieval religion and literature in Bohemia, just as Wyclif's own followers had done in England. Both thinkers, and the movements associated with them, played a crucial role in the transformation of later medieval European thought, in particular through a radically enlarged role of textual production in the vernaculars (especially Middle English and Old Czech), as well as in Latin, in the philosophical, theological, and ecclesiological realms. This interdisciplinary volume of essays brings together cutting-edge research from scholars working in these and contiguous fields and asks fundamental questions about the methods that informed Wycliffite and Hussite writings and those by their interlocutors and opponents. Viewing these debates through a methodological lens enables a reassessment of the impact that they had, and the responses they elicited, across a range of European cultures, from England in the west via France and Austria to Bohemia in the east. ‎Spoliation as Translation. Medieval Worlds of the Eastern Mediterranean‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Paperback, 201 pages, Size:210 x 270 mm, Illustrations:79 col., Language: English. ISBN 9788021099234.‎

‎Summary The articles gathered in this special issue of Convivium offer a variety of perspectives - history of medieval art, architecture, literary studies - that explore the relations between spoliation and translation, with a particular focus on the interconnections and similarities between material/artistic and textual/literary cultures. Building on current research in spolia and translation studies, these contributions respond to the increasing interest in and popularity of these two topics in recent scholarship. A conceptual point of departure is that reuse and translation represent two crucial processes facilitating cultural dialogues and exchanges across time and space. Material and textual spolia fascinate us, because they provide various means and levels of engagement with the past with a tangible form, sometimes of an ambivalent nature. Objects, artefacts, buildings, and texts have been subject to constant reworkings, through which they have been interpreted and translated: old stories gain new significance in new contexts, just as old objects gain new meanings in new settings. The aim of this collection is to foster a better understanding of such processes and, at the same time, of the history of the medieval worlds of the Eastern Mediterranean, which is marked by constant cross-cultural encounters and interactions. ‎Premodern Translation. Comparative Approaches to Cross-Cultural Transformations‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 189 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503590974.‎

‎Summary This edited collection offers six essays on translations and their producers and users in premodern societies, which explore possibilities for contextualizing and questioning the well-established narratives of translations and translating in history of science and philosophy. To enable such explorations, the editors decided to go beyond a conventional focus on Latin and Arabic medieval cultures. Thus a discussion of translation in East Asia that asks questions about the technologies of translation invites readers familiar with Western contexts to reflect on shared cross-cultural practices. Other authors ask new questions concerning mathematical, medical, or philosophical translations, such as the character and the role of 'submerged' translations that never made it into any of the traditional histories of translation in medieval societies. A third group of authors offer perspectives on early modern professionals, which open up the traditional research on translations to other fields of study, and allow us to reflect on changed practices and purposes of translation. Featuring studies on Old Uyghur translations of Buddhist texts, on the fortune of a Latin translation of Arabic mathematics from al-Andalus, on Arabic philosophy and the division of the sciences in thirteenth-century Paris and Naples, on Albert the Great's concept of interpretatio as an epistemic practice that combines translation and explanation, on translation between classical Arabic and Humanist traditions in early modern Spain, and on astronomy in early modern German scholarship, this volume offers a unique survey of premodern translations across a variety of languages and disciplines, exploring both their technical commonalities and cultural specificities, while also addressing the reception of the ideas they transmit. ‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 661 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:28 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503589749.‎

‎Summary The Physiologus is an ancient Christian collection of astonishing stories about animals, stones, and plants that serve as positive or negative models for Christians. Written originally in Greek, the Physiologus was translated in ancient times into Latin, Armenian, Syriac, Coptic, Ethiopic, Georgian, Arabic, and Old Slavonic. Throughout its transformations and adaptations, the Physiologus has never lost its attraction. The present volume offers an introduction to the significance of the Greek text, a new examination of its manuscript tradition, and a completely revised state of the art for each of the ancient translations. Two chapters of the Physiologus, on the pelican and on the panther, are edited in Greek and in each translation. These editions are accompanied by a new English rendering of the edited texts as well as short interpretative essays concerning the two animals. The volume affords new insights into this fascinating book's diffusion, transmission, and reception over the centuries, from its composition at the beginning of the third century CE in Alexandria to the end of the Middle Ages, and across all regions of the Byzantine Empire, the Latin West, Egypt and Ethiopia, the Middle East, the Caucasus, and Slavia orthodoxa. ‎Acquisition through Translation. Towards a Definition of Renaissance Translation‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, 380 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:12 b/w, Languages: English, Italian, German. ISBN 9782503589541.‎

‎Summary The definition of translation in Renaissance Europe is here proposed as a process of acquisition: the book studies how a number of European languages, finding their identification in the newly evolving concept of nation, shape their countries' vernacular libraries by appropriating ancient and contemporary classics. The emergence of standard modern languages in early modern Europa entailed a competition with the dominant Latin culture, which remained the prevalent medium for the language of science, philosophy, theology and philology until at least the eighteenth century. In this process, translation played a very special role: in a number of significant instances we can identify in the undertaking of a specific translation a policy of acquisition of classical - and by definition authoritative - texts that contributed to the building of an intellectual library for the emerging nation. At the same time, the transmission of ideas and texts across Europe constructed a diasporic and transnational culture: the emerging vernacular cultures acquired not only the classical Latin models, incorporating them in their own intellectual libraries, but turned their attention also to contemporary, or near-contemporary, vernacular texts, conferring on them, through the act of translation, the status of classics. Through the examination of case studies, that take into account both literary and scientific texts, this volume offers an overview of how early modern Europe developed its vernacular national literatures, following the model suggested in the late Middle Ages, through a process of acquisition and translation. ‎Contest, Translation, and the Chaucerian Text‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, 232 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:3 b/w, 6 col., Languages: English, French. ISBN 9782503546636.‎

‎Summary This sophisticated volume sheds new light on the transmission of texts in the medieval period by drawing into dialogue a study of medieval translation between English and French with questions concerning the Chaucerian canon and its reception. The author takes as a focus point three Middle English translations of French-language works - The Romaunt of the Rose, the Belle Dame Sans Mercy, and An ABC to the Virgin - and assesses the way in which these works respond to and reconfigure their source material, while at the same time questioning how the connection of these translations with Chaucer has influenced our critical understanding of them. In this book, these three translations are therefore removed from their habitual place on the fringes of the English Chaucer canon, and are instead analysed in the context of late-medieval literary and cultural hybridity. The result is a fascinating reconceptualization of these works as creative, cross-channel participations in late- medieval debates, and simultaneously a call for the reappraisal of 'the Chaucerian' as a critical category.‎

‎Translation and the Rediscovery of Rhetoric‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, xi + 443 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9780888442178.‎

‎Summary Translation and the Rediscovery of Rhetoric presents a diachronic case study of how translation is the means by which rhetoric, as the art of reasoning, becomes a part of a lineage of - and a resource for - an ethics of civic discourse. It shows how translation (as practice and as theory, via the medieval topos of translatio as the transfer of knowledge) serves as the vehicle for the transfer of rhetoric as an art of argumentation and persuasion from classical Greece and Rome to modern Paris and Brussels by way of medieval France and Italy. This study explores a significant and quite specific transmission of rhetorical thought. Beginning with the Roman orator Cicero it proceeds to the medieval Italian notary, philosopher, and statesman Brunetto Latini, whose translations of Cicero's De inventione would plant the seeds for the renewal of rhetoric as an art of persuasion and radically change the fate of rhetoric in the twentieth century in the work of the French literary critic Jean Paulhan and the Belgian philosophers Cha m Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca. In so doing, Translation and the Rediscovery of Rhetoric serves to underscore the importance of medieval culture to contemporary thought by studying not only how knowledge was transmitted from antiquity to modernity by means of translation, but also by revealing how the Middle Ages made an essential and traceable contribution to modern rhetorical studies.‎

‎Summary The culmination of over a decade's research on verbal culture in the pre- and post-Conversion medieval North at Bergen's Centre for Medieval Studies, this volume traces the movement of words and texts temporally, geographically, and intellectually across different media and genres. The contributions gathered here begin with a reassessment of how the unique verbal cultures of Scandinavia and Iceland can be understood in a broader European context, and then move on to explore foundational Nordic Latin histories and vernacular sagas. Key case studies are put forward to highlight the importance of institutional and individual writing communities, epistolary and list-making cultures, and the production of manuscripts as well as runic inscriptions. Finally, the oral-written continuum is examined, with a focus on important works such as slendingab k and Landn mab k, Old-Norse Icelandic translated romances, and the development of prosimetra. Together, these essays form a state-of-the-art volume that offers new and vital insights into the role of literacy in the Norse-speaking world. ‎Medicine at Monte Cassino. Constantine the African and the Oldest Manuscript of his Pantegni‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Hardback, xxxvi + 255 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:46 b/w, 16 col., 6 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503579214.‎

‎Summary Fleeing his North-African homeland for Italy, Constantine the African arrived in Salerno and then joined the abbey of Monte Cassino south of Rome in c. 1077. He dedicated his life to the translation of more than two dozen medical texts from Arabic into Latin. These great efforts produced the first substantial written body of medical theory and practice in medieval Europe. His most important contribution, an encyclopedia he called the Pantegni (The Complete Art), was translated and adapted from the Complete Book of the Medical Art by the Persian physician 'Ali ibn al-'Abb?s al-Ma??s? (d. 982). This monograph focuses on the oldest manuscript of the Pantegni,Theorica, which represents a work-in-progress with numerous unusual features. This study, for the first time, identifies Monte Cassino as the origin of this oldest Pantegni manuscript, and asserts that it was made during Constantine's lifetime. It further demonstrates how a skilled team of scribes and scholars assisted the translator in the complex process of producing this Latin version of the Arabic text. Several members of this production team are identified, both in the Pantegni manuscript and in other copies of Cassinese manuscripts. The book breaks new ground by identifying a range of manuscripts produced at Monte Cassino under Constantine's direct supervision, as evidenced by their material features, script, and contents. In rare detail, this study explores some of the challenges met by 'Team Constantine' as they sought to reveal new knowledge to the West, which in turn revolutionized medical understanding throughout medieval Europe. This is really a quite remarkable study, utterly transformative of our understanding of one of the turning points in the history of Western civilization, the moment when Greco-Arabic medicine was introduced into the Latin European world. ‎Summary This volume offers an in-depth exploration of the cultural connections between and across Britain, Ireland, and Iceland during the high and late Middle Ages. Drawing together new research from international scholars working in Celtic Studies, Norse, and English, the contributions gathered together here establish the coherence of the medieval Insular world as an area for literary analysis and engage with a range of contemporary approaches to examine the ways, and the degrees to which, Insular literatures and cultures connect both with each other, and with the wider European mainstream. The articles in this collection discuss the Insular histories of some of the most widely read literary works and authors of the Middle Ages, including Geoffrey of Monmouth and William Langland. They trace the legends of Troy and of Charlemagne as they travelled across linguistic and geographical borders, give fresh attention to the multilingual manuscript collections of great households and families, and explore the political implications of language choice in a linguistically plural society. In doing so, they shed light on a complex network of literary and cultural connections and establish the Insular world not as a periphery, but as a centre. ‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, 321 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:5 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503581828.‎

‎Summary In the first two decades of the fifteenth century, the Hussite religious reform movement emerged in Bohemia; it used one of the realm's vernacular languages, Czech, both to disseminate its reform ideas, and to establish strong foundations for the reform. The vernacular became a significant strategy for identification, capable of binding together disconnected religious, ethnic, political and regional identities and generating a very potent aggregate of identifications. This volume considers material from the second half of the fourteenth century to the first half of the sixteenth, beginning with the so-called Hussite 'forerunners' and ending with the early German reformation. Individual essays discuss the various functions of the vernaculars in different text types, social situations and religious and political contexts. Together, they correct former assumptions about the topic and provide a basis for further study of Hussite vernacular theology and contribute to the transformation of scholarly narratives about the Hussite movement by including works of vernacular religious education among the most important source material. It offers a basis for the comparative research on the role of the vernaculars in late medieval European religious reform movements. ‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, 265 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:4 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503581804.‎

‎Summary Concentrating on the period of the emergence of the vernaculars in the context of religious text production in Central and Eastern Central Europe from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries, the individual studies in this volume present material so far neglected by nationally defined historiographies and literary studies. The process of vernacularization created a new sociolinguistic field for the negotiation of social order through the choice of texts and topics. This volume seeks to answer the questions of whether, why and how distinctive new communicative, literary, and political cultures developed after the vernacular languages had acquired ever higher levels of literacy and education. The volume fills a gap in contemporary scholarship on the role of the vernaculars and vernacular literatures in European medieval societies and with the focus on Eastern European regions it breaks new ground in regard to questions that have so far only been explored on the basis of material from Europe's 'West'. ‎Summary This volume marks the culmination of the PRIN Project 'Tradurre tradire tramandare', funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research and coordinated by the editors. Bringing together contributions on translations of patristic texts from Greek into Latin and Syriac, with excursions into other linguistic domains and types of translation and rewriting, the aim is to investigate specific case studies, highlighting at the same time common methodological issues: texts' authorship and attributions; the relationships between theories and practices of Christian translations; receptions and adaptations; and promising future avenues for research. This scholarly exploration of ancient Christian texts reveals the profound implications of translation as a conduit for comprehension, reinterpretation, and the enduring dissemination (as well as selection) of ideas across different eras and geographical landscapes. The contributions in this volume represent a diverse array of voices, collectively delving into the intricate interplay between translation, context, and transformation. Each contribution offers valuable insights into the labyrinthine corridors of linguistic metamorphosis, where the boundaries of faithfulness and creativity intersect, breathing new meanings into texts as they journey from the source to the target language. ‎Paschasius Radbertus, Mark G. Vaillancourt (ed)‎

‎On the Virgin Birth' and 'On the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary'‎

‎, Brepols, 2025 Paperback, 156 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, Latin. *new ISBN 9782503599496.‎

‎Summary On the Virgin Birth and On the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary are two key Mariological treatises by the ninth-century Carolingian theologian Paschasius Radbertus. Written at a time when scholarship and erudition during the Carolingian Renaissance were at their height and prominence in the great monastery of Corbie, these two works offer important insights into ninth-century reception of the doctrines of Mary's perpetual virginity and her assumption into heaven. Written for the nuns of the monastery of Notre-Dame de Soissons, they also provide important source material for the study of female spirituality during the Carolingian Reformation era. This work presents for the first time an English translation with introduction and commentary of these texts, based on the critical editions found in Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaevalis?(CC CM, 56C). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation.
