‎ENNIUS [OFFPRINT] Ennius As a Dramatic Poet‎

‎Offprint. Wraps browned. Gift inscription from Jocelyn to G. P. Goold in pen to front wrap. ; Pp 41-95; Offprint from Entretiens Sur L'Antiquité Classique Tome XVII; 54 pages; Signed by Author‎

‎Jocelyn, H. D.‎

‎THE TRAGEDIES OF ENNIUS The Fragments. Edited with an Introduction and Commentary‎

‎Notes in ink and pencil by G. P. Goold (? ) to some pages. Light bumping to a couple of corners. ; Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries; 482 pages; The Tragedies of Ennius were theatrical adaptations of Attic originals. None has survived; but fragments of twenty-two of them can be found in the work of other writers. Dr Jocelyn prints all the identifiable fragments, substantial extracts from the works which quote them and, where necessary, a critical apparatus. The long introduction discusses the early history of Roman public spectacles; the physical conditions of the theatre in the third and second centuries; the effect these had on the poets who had to adapt the scripts of Attic tragedies; the general character of the Latin plays thus produced; and the fate of these scripts (particularly those of Ennius) in later antiquity. The commentary is both detailed and discursive. Besides glossing and interpreting in the usual way, it considers the problems of restoring individual fragments and of using these fragments to reconstruct both the plays from which they came and the Attic originals. It also elucidates the methods used by Ennius to reproduce the effects of language and style of the classical Athenian dramatists.‎

‎John of Garland, Martin Hall (ed)‎

‎John of Garland's De triumphis Ecclesie. A new critical edition with introduction and translation‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, 417 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:10 col., Languages: English, Latin. ISBN 9782503585116.‎

‎Summary This is the first translation in any language of John of Garland's poem about the historical events of his lifetime (c. 1195- c. 1258), together with revised Latin text, introduction and notes. This work gives a vivid picture of Anglo-French relations, of studies in Toulouse after the Albigensian Crusade, and of the need for faith following Louis' catastrophic defeat in the Seventh Crusade. John gives us insights into his own life, and a stream of stories, holy and profane. The translation and notes bring to life for a wide range of medievalists this eye-witness account by an Englishman in France of major events of the age, especially 1242-52. They make clear John's debts to classical authors and to contemporaries, especially Alan of Lille and Matthew Paris. Through re-ordering the lines, this edition now generates clarity from the single manuscript. It also offers fresh insights and a new perspective on John of Garland himself. ‎Les Sarrasins - L'islam dans l'imagination européenne au Moyen Âge par John TOLAN‎

‎2003 PARIS, Ed. flammarion/Aubier, col.

‎Origins of Church Wealth in Mexico: Ecclesiastical Revenues and Church Finances 1523-1600‎

‎xii241 pages with figures tables maps appendices and index. Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6 1/4" bound in original publisher's green cloth with silver lettering to spine and decorative cover. First edition. By the middle of the eighteenth century the Catholic church was by far the single most powerful institution in New Spain rivaling even the royal government. The power of the church political spiritual and economic was to pose a major threat to the central government of Mexico well into the twentieth century. Yet this institution did not appear fully developed but underwent a long process of growth beginning in the decades following Cortes's conquest of the Aztec empire. In order better to understand the process through which the church attained such power this study will look at the origins of the economic power of the church in colonial Mexico. ‎Vasconcelos of Mexico: Philosopher and Prophet‎

‎ix103 pages with frontispiece appendices and index. Octavo 8 1/4" x 5 3/4" bound in original white cloth with black and chartreuse lettering to spine and black lettering to front cover.  inscribed by the author  First edition. Jose Vasconecelos  lawyer politician writer educator philosopher prophet and mystic - was one of the most influential and controversial figures in the intellectual life of twentieth century Mexico. Vasconcelos was driven by the desire to gain a complete and comprehensive vision of reality employing his own aesthetic emotive method and a poetic mode of expression The complex philosophical system that resulted is what he called "aesthetic monism." But this is only one side of the man. Don Jose was also vitally interested in both the proximate realities and remote possibilities of Mexico in the character of the "cosmic race" of his homeland and the relations between his own country and others of this hemisphere. Soon after Vasconcelos' death in 159 Eduardo Garcia Maynez spoke of him in a moving tribute as "without question the most inspiring intellectual and human figure that Mexico produced."  Unhappily -  and perhaps disgracefully - he has remained almost unknown outside the Spanish-speaking world. Histories of Mexico published in English usually give passing mention to his role as Minister of Public Education or his unsuccessful campaign for the Presidency but his aesthetic system and his socio-political ideas have been ignored by philosophers in the Untied States. Here for the first time is a unified inclusive and occasionally critical presentation of the entire range of Vasconcelos' though from his metaphysics and theory of knowledge through his aesthetics and ethics to his social and political philosophy. It is enriched by an Appendix in which the most significant passages from Don Jose's own philosophical writings are presented in English translations. Condition: Inscribed on front end paper corners bumped moderate rubbing to extremities. ‎COMMISSION UNDER THE CONVENTION BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES & PARAGUAY. Opinion and Report of Hon. Cave Johnson, The American Commissioner, Accompanying the Award.‎

‎70p. 8vo. Modern wraps. According to the 'Dictionary of United States History' "A commercial treaty was concluded between the United States and Paraguay in 1853, but Paraguay failed to ratify it. Differences arose which led to the manifestation of force by the United States, and treaties of indemnity, commerce and navigation were concluded in 1859." The controversy involved the U.S.S. Water Witch, a sidewheel gunboat sloop built in 1853. Its first assignment was to undertake an extensive survey of the region around the River Plate, and in particular the Parana River in Argentina and Paraguay. The ship sailed under command of Lieutenant Thomas Jefferson Page on February 8, 1853, and after several stops, she arrived at Buenos Aires in May. After ensuring the safety of the Argentine Confederation's General Justo Urquiza following the siege of Buenos Aires, Page began his official assignment. Water Witch was the first steam vessel to ascend the Parana, Paraguay, and Salado Rivers, and her three years of surveys showed that these rivers were navigable by large, powered vessels, a fact that had great implications for the growth of Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. Though the expedition was a success, on February 1, 1855, Page ignored a Paraguayan decree forbidding him to ascend the Parana River, and one sailor was killed when the fort at Itapiru fired on the ship. Water Witch returned to the United States in 1856, and in 1858 returned to the Plate as part of Flag Officer W. B. Shubrick's Paraguay Expedition, one aim of which was to negotiate a treaty and compensation for the dead man's family. Scarce. LATIN AMERICA BOX 2‎

‎OVID BEFORE EXILE Art and Punishment in the Metamorphoses‎

‎2 small dings to fore-edges of boards else fine. ; Wisconsin Studies in Classics; 184 pages; The epic Metamorphoses, Ovid’s most renowned work, has regained its stature among the masterpieces of great poets such as Vergil, Horace, and Tibullus. Yet its irreverent tone and bold defiance of generic boundaries set the Metamorphoses apart from its contemporaries. Ovid before Exile provides a compelling new reading of the epic, examining the text in light of circumstances surrounding the final years of Augustus’ reign, a time when a culture of poets and patrons was in sharp decline, discouraging and even endangering artistic freedom of expression. Patricia J. Johnson demonstrates how the production of art—specifically poetry—changed dramatically during the reign of Augustus. By Ovid’s final decade in Rome, the atmosphere for artistic work had transformed, leading to a drop in poetic production of quality. Johnson shows how Ovid, in the episodes of artistic creation that anchor his Metamorphoses, responded to his audience and commented on artistic circumstances in Rome.‎

‎A LATIN LOVER IN ANCIENT ROME Readings in Propertius and His Genre‎

‎Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). Else book is fine. ; Over the centuries, Latin love elegy has inspired love poetry in the West from Petrarch to Pound. A Latin Lover in Ancient Rome: Readings in Propertius and His Genre offers a critical reevaluation of the Latin elegiac poet Propertius, situating him within the social and political milieu of first-century BCE Rome. W. R. Johnson’s study is centered on close readings of the poems in Propertius’ four books that emphasize both his celebration of erotic freedom as a manifestation of the sovereignty of the individual and his insistence on the value of this freedom, especially when it is threatened by autocratic ideology. Many recent titles on Propertius have tended to minimize or ignore this aspect of the poet’s work, concentrating instead on neo-formalism or Lacanian psychology. Johnson restores Propertius’ erotic creed and his politics to the core of his poetics and his career. He offers a vivid picture of the sociopolitical and erotic world of the late Roman Republic and the early years of the Empire which hatched Latin love elegy and allowed it to flourish. This study aims to redirect attention to the pleasures and energies Propertius provides that later generations of poets and readers discovered in and through him. ; 176 pages‎

‎LUCRETIUS AND THE MODERN WORLD‎

‎Scholar's name to half-title (Robert Brown). Minor creasing to wraps. ; Lucretius' "On the Nature of Things", one of the glories of Latin literature, provides a vivid poetic exposition of the doctrines of the Greek atomist, Epicurus. The poem played a crucial role in the reinvention of science in the seventeenth century, its influence on the French Enlightenment was powerful and pervasive, and it became a major battlefield in the wars of religion with science in nineteenth-century England. But in the twentieth century, despite its vital contributions to modern thought and civilisation, it has been largely neglected by common readers and scientists alike. This book offers an extensive description of the poem, with special emphasis on its cheerful version of materialism and on its attempt to devise an ethical system that suits such a universe. It surveys major relevant texts form the eighteenth and ninetheenth centuries (Dryden, Diderot, Voltaire, Tennyson, Santayana) and speculates on why Lucretius and the ancient scientific tradition he championed has become marginalised in the twentieth century. It closes with a discussion of what value the poem has for students of science and technology in the new century: what advice it has to offer us about how to go about reinventing our machines and our morality. ; Classical Inter/Faces; 128 pages‎
