AN EARLY VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF FROM A GIGANTIC VOLUME OF SAINTS LIVES IN LATIN
TEXT FROM THE LIFE OF SAINT CYPRIAN THE MARTYR
Italy perhaps Lombardy ca. 1100. 432 x 305 mm. 17 x 12". Double column 42 lines in a pleasing attenuated Caroline minuscule. Ruled in dry point. Faint later 15th or 16th century computations in several places on the recto as well as one in the margin on the verso. Formerly a structural element in a binding and consequently a bit browned recto with light glue stains affecting much of the text 10 or 12 lines obliterated and many words difficult to read edges a little ragged but still an excellent specimen despite these defects the leaf with ample margins so nothing lost to trimming and with the verso quite clear and legible. From a very stately volume on the lives of the saints this leaf recounts the life of Saint Cyprian d. 258 a bishop of Carthage martyred under the persecutions of the Roman emperor Valerian. This leaf's drypoint or hard point ruling done with a stylus or knife suggests that our text was written out before or around 1100 as lead point or plummet generally came into use in the 11th and especially the 12th century. The hand is distinctive for the unusual majuscule "Q" which is elevated noticeably from all the other letters in the text allowing for a notably graceful angular descent. unknown

Headlines written in French in a later 18th century calligraphic hand. Light soiling gold a little rubbed portions of the Virgin's face and robe noticeably chipped and the details of the Child entirely rubbed away but still an attractive leaf generally clean and smooth with ample margins and bright color. From a charmingly decorated 15th century prayer book this leaf contains one of the most beloved prayers in the Book of Hours in which the petitioner addresses the Virign Mary directly. The accompanying miniature features the classic image of the Madonna shown here in full length cradling the Child in her arms. Given the popularity of the "O Intermerata" prayer within the Books of Hours it is not surprising that some of the paint has been degraded due to frequent use; but although the details have been obscured the meaning is clear and it is touching to think of the Medieval owners referring to this section for solace comfort time and time again. Light soiling rubrics faded gold somewhat dulled the frame around the miniature a bit chipped and the lower half the figure's face without paint questionable as to whether this was a choice by the artist as it rather resembles a white beard but these issues mostly minor and one the whole a very nice specimen generally clean and smooth with ample margins and bright color. From a charmingly decorated 15th century prayer book this lovely leaf offers the opportunity to acquire a particularly nice miniature with considerable gold ornamentation at an attainable price. The text here comes from prayers addressed to God the Father which would have been proceeded by prayers to the Son and Holy Spirit to complete the Trinity. The accompanying image shows God enthroned above the clouds holding an orb in one hand and wearing a strikingly bright red robe. A little general soiling gold a bit dulled and rubbed margins with a scattering of naturally occuring freckles and a small wrinkle underdrawing exposed on the Virgin's hands face and torso as well as on the body of Christ paint possibly never added in the first place but still quite an attractive specimen and of interest for its unfinished appearance. From a charmingly decorated 15th century prayer book this leaf contains one of the most beloved prayers in the Book of Hours in which the petitioner addresses the Virign Mary directly. The accompanying image showing the Virgin in prayer with the Child on her lap is common for this section but on our leaf it takes on new interest due to the lack of paint on much of the figures exposing the original drawing underneath. Though it is possible that the paint was rubbed away through use or damage the sharp lines retained by her outer garment suggest that it was either never added or was perhaps carefully scratched away with the intention to fix or change this part of the image. Whatever the reason it presents an uncommon opportunity to study the underdrawing that would otherwise be obscured in the final stages of manuscript production. TEXT FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE PENITENTIAL PSALMS
Italy mid-15th century. 134 x 93 mm. 5 1/4 x 3 5/8". Single column verso with 14 lines in an elegant gothic rotunda. Rubrics in red one-line initials in red and blue A NINE-LINE HISTORIATED INITIAL OF DAVID PLAYING THE HARP the initial painted blue green pink and burnished gold on gilt ground with luscious extenders connecting to a FULL BORDER of similarly painted acanthus leaves flowers and gold bezants. A short expertly repaired tear to fore-edge border a hint of residue along the gutter where it once was bound a breath of rubbing to burnished gold but IN OVERALL BEAUTIFUL CONDITION the paint fresh and vibrant and THE FIGURE OF DAVID PERFECTLY PRESERVED. This exceedingly beautiful Italian leaf blooming with burnished gold and vibrant color features an unusually large historiated initial by Ser Ricciardo di Nanni a particularly skilled illuminator patronized by the Medicis and known to have worked on several notable illuminated manuscripts from the middle of the 15th century to about 1480. Favored by Piero and Giovanni de' Medici for whom he supplied illuminations of mostly classical texts di Nanni also worked for their father Cosimo contributing his brush to some of the most stunning choir books ever produced. The quality of di Nanni's output positions him among the best manuscript artists of the period and his illuminations appear in some of the world's finest collections including the Getty the Morgan Library and the Fitzwilliam Museum. According to Christie's "His style is supremely confident fluid and appealing." His figures are "subtly modelled with washes of varying opacity and tone. People of all ages and sexes have large heavily lidded eyes sombre expressions--even the putti--and make tender expressive gestures." The present leaf is an excellent example of this style: David's solemn expression is accentuated by his heavy eyes sunken cheekbones and long downturned mouth--the personification of penitence. This portrait-like historiation puts the focus entirely on David's visage asking the viewer to enter into direct dialogue with a figure begging for forgiveness. Besides being obviously beautiful to look at and encouraging the examination of one's own transgressions this type of image would no doubt have been especially appealing to a humanistic audience with an interest in human thought and reason. unknown

AN ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF WITH A WONDERFUL HISTORIATED INITIAL FROM AN OUTSTANDING MONUMENTAL BIBLE IN LATIN
TEXT FROM THE BEGINNING OF ROMANS
Southern France perhaps Bordeaux ca. 1300. Visible portion of leaf under mat: 305 x 206 mm. 12 x 8 1/8"; Frame: 520 x 414 mm. 20 1/2 x 16 1/4". Double column 40 lines of text in an extraordinarily fine gothic book hand. Matted and framed. Rubrics in red capitals struck with red headlines and chapter number in red and blue one two-line initial in blue and one three-line initial in red with intricate contrasting penwork extending the full length of the leaf along each column WITH A MAGNIFICENT HISTORIATED "P" DEPICTING ST. PAUL HOLDING A SWORD AND BOOK the saint with gilt halo standing before a beautiful blue background patterned with interlacing octagon shapes two gold bezants and two columns on either side of the figure this initial on a ground of pale pink with white tracery with extenders running the length of the column accentuated with trefoils and bezants on blue ground with spikey shape. A few faint dots between columns probably offset from facing page otherwise REMARKABLY WELL PRESERVED ESPECIALLY BRIGHT CLEAN AND FRESH WITH THE INITIAL IN PRISTINE CONDITION. This leaf comes from one of the most beautiful Bibles ever illuminated and not surprisingly also comes with distinguished provenance. The level of preservation here is extraordinarily fine and the artistic accomplishment is difficult to overpraise. The painter who has obviously done his work with great care and confidence has produced an initial characterized by a sharply defined central figure impressive precision and an intelligent design all of which add up to an unusually high level of aesthetic achievement. The text here is the most important of St. Paul's writings his Epistle to the Romans in which the Apostle argues for salvation through faith in Christ. The opening initial is appropriately large standing proudly on the page inhabited by the nearly full-length figure of St. Paul whose bright orange robes propel him off the azure background. He is depicted with his traditional trappings a sword and book which he clutches closely to his chest while raising his head toward the heavens. Our leaf was once part of a spectacular Bible in the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps his MS 2506 and later owned by Sir Alfred Chester Beatty his MS W. 173. The Bordeaux origin is suggested by the presence in the original volume of two 16th century inscriptions by monks from that city. Phillipps' heirs sold the Bible privately to Beatty in 1921 and it was auctioned in his sale at Sotheby's on 24 June 1969 to Alan Thomas then bought by Duschnes of New York and broken up. The heir to a large estate Phillipps 1792-1872 made collecting the chief business of his life eventually becoming simply the greatest collector of manuscripts in history. The American later British and then Irish engineer Beatty 1875-1968 started at the bottom and by the time he was 35 had made a fortune in copper mining. He began a serious career in collecting manuscripts at first Islamic and then Western accumulating in the end enough material to fill a catalogue of some 38 volumes. According to George Edwards' article in "Grolier 2000" Beatty "had the highest standards of quality and condition" as a collector a claim that is clearly validated by the present leaf. unknown

France c. 1480. 150 x 105 mm. 6 x 4 1/8". Attractively matted and framed. Three-line initial "D" inhabited by the image of a skull A FULL-PAGE MINIATURE depicting Job sitting on a dung heap in front of a ruined house talking with three men and with an emaciated body at the foot of the scene framed by two gold columns See: Avril and Reynaud "Les Manuscrits a Peintures en France" pp. 326-7. Significant rubbing to the paint in the bottom portion of the leaf on the right and beneath the text including the corpse a few small smudges and chips of paint here and there mostly negligible otherwise a well-preserved specimen the paint in the main scene thick and rich. This miniature attributed to a prolific artist with ties to the famed "Tr�s Riches Heures" of the Duc de Berry displays a complex array of imagery. Unlike the other sections of a Book of Hours which were often truncated and simplified for a lay audience the Office of the Dead contains the exact same cycle of prayers found in the liturgy of the Church. The nine lessons found therein all come from the book of Job making illustrations of his story a particularly apt choice to accompany this section. This particular scene shows Job at his lowest point having lost his family and riches emaciated covered in nothing but a loincloth and sitting upon a dung heap. Although the artist chose not to show the boils and sores that he would have been suffering at this moment the direness of his situation is clear. At the right stand three men the richness of their attire a stark contrast to Job's nakedness who have come to counsel and comfort their friend. Interestingly beneath the opening line of text that appears in this miniature are the skeletal remains of a body along with a second skull. While images of corpses frequently occur in miniatures depicting funeral rites and burials it is unusual to find such imagery in a miniature devoted to quite another subject altogether let alone one with a prescribed Biblical text on which to draw. With the additional skull in the initial one will notice that there are three in total; might they along with the three friends depicted above be an allusion to the Three Living and Three Dead The miniature can be attributed to Jean Colombe ca. 1430-93 a prolific illuminator active in Bourges in the 1460s through the 1480s and best known for his finishing work on the "Tr�s Riches Heures" after the death of the Limbourg brothers. According to Avril and Reynaud he was influenced by both Barth�lemy d'Eyck and to a greater extent Fouquet but quickly developed a recognizable style of own. Given the complexity of the scene in the present miniature it is no surprise that Colombe's style is known to be "excellent in narrative and anecdote and does not shy away from any accumulation of details" p. 326. unknown

France probably Paris late 13th century. the leaf with later extensions at bottom and fore edge: 150 x 105 mm. 6 x 4 1/8". Single column 18 lines in a proto-gothic hand. One blue and red penwork line filler several one-line initials in either gold or blue with blue or red penwork one two-line initial in gold inhabited by a bird on a blue and pink ground with an extension in gold running down the length of the remaining page ONE EIGHT-LINE INHABITED INITIAL showing Christ in Majesty holding a book recto with borders of thick gold bars on a blue and pink ground terminating in a bird in one spot. A slender portion of the fore edge and a larger portion of the lower margin replaced with either later plain vellum or early decorated vellum the latter very likely from the same manuscript the unrepaired part of the leaf consequently measuring approximately 125 x 95 mm. the lower marginal repair obscuring a half line of text initial somewhat rubbed a bit of general toning and rubbing to the vellum but still an appealing leaf from this early period of illumination with the gold still surprisingly bright and much of the detail in the large initial still present. Although the present leaf is not without some condition issues it is clear that it was once part of an especially lovely and expensive manuscript. Centers of professional manuscript production were well established in Paris by the mid-12th century and the small size and design of this leaf suggest that it made for a person of some means. The initial which takes up a full quarter of the page is quite large for a book of this size; the liberal use of gold further signals that it was a work of some lavishness. This leaf almost certainly comes from either a Psalter or Psalter-Hours the predecessors of Books of Hours given its size and content. Such sumptuously decorated leaves from this important period of illumination are increasingly difficult to come by and the present leaf presents an excellent opportunity to obtain a pleasing example at a reasonable price. unknown

One-line initial in burnished gold on a pink and blue ground with white tracery a two-line initial and a three-line initial in pink with white tracery on a ground of burnished gold the center filled with twining blue vines bearing pink and scarlet flowers verso with a rinceau panel border featuring twining hairline stems bearing burnished gold ivy leaves and fruit blue and gold acanthus leaves and flowers recto WITH AN ARCH-TOPPED MINIATURE OF THE HOLY TRINITY SURROUNDED BY THE HEAVENLY HOST this and the accompanying text enclosed by a pink blue and burnished gold bar border on one side and a brushed gold bar border with pink lotus flowers on two sides the whole surrounded by A FULL RINCEAU BORDER DENSE WITH ACANTHUS LEAVES FOLIAGE FRUIT FLOWERS AND TINY GOLD BERRIES on hairline stems. A little paint flaked from the book held by the Trinity a couple of small spots in the margin otherwise in fine condition--clean and smooth with comfortable margins and bright gold. The Trinity is shown here seated on a canopied throne with God the Son his hand raised in blessing to the left of the Father. The latter in a towering crown holds a gold orb and the Father and Son together support a large book opened between them. The dove of the Holy Spirit hovers above the book radiating golden beams. The Trinity is flanked on both sides by cherubim and seraphim in rich red and soft yellow. It is the rendering of this angelic ambiance that elevates the level of aesthetic achievement here: both red and yellow celestial beings are given a ghostly appearance as if appearing out of a filmy yellow or a densely red fog. The artistic qualities as a whole suggest that this leaf comes from a manuscript commissioned by a person of significant means. unknown

Rubrics in red one-line initials in red blue or burnished gold FIVE FINE TWO-LINE INITIALS IN BURNISHED GOLD on a blue or pink ground with white tracery THREE LOVELY ILLUMINATED BARS running the length of the leaf sprouting clusters of flowers and leaves with frenzied penwork in upper and lower margins the column without a bar border having an extended garland of flowers leaves and bezants in colors and gold running the length of the text AND TWO FINE HISTORIATED INITIALS IN COLORS AND GOLD ONE SHOWING A MALE MARTYR HOLDING A PALM LEAF THE OTHER DEPICTING ST. ANICETUS IN PAPAL REGALIA. Faint soiling to edges otherwise AN EXTREMELY FINE LEAF smooth and bright with paint and glittering gold intact. Executed with very great skill and delicacy and in sensitive Italianate colors the present leaf not surprisingly comes from a manuscript intended for a powerful aristocrat--a breviary illuminated for the chapel of the Marquises of Este rulers of Ferrara and Mantua the work commissioned by Leonello d'Este duke of Ferrara from 1441-50. Fortunately the d'Este family kept excellent records and this manuscript is believed to be the Breviary done for Leonello by Giorgio d'Alemagna Bartolomeo de Beninc� Guglielmo Giraldi and Matteo de' Pasti See F. Toniolo ed. "La miniatura a Ferrara dal tempo di Cosm� Tura all'eredit� di Ercole de' Roberti" 1998 pp. 19 20 76-77. Leaves from this book show subtle variations in the style of the illuminations a result of work done by a team of artists doing variations on a theme. At one time in a Spanish library the manuscript was brought to Britain during the Peninsular War and came to be owned by the Rolls family later Lords Llangattock of Monmouth in Wales from whom it takes its name. By the time the work reached Britain most of the miniatures had already been cut out. The Breviary sold at Christie's on 8 December 1958 lot #190 to Goodspeed's of Boston who broke it up. The intact first quire of 10 leaves was purchased by Philip Hofer and given to Harvard cf. Wieck "Late Medieval and Renaissance Illuminated Manuscripts" p. 130 and fig. 74 and individual leaves appeared in 1967 in the catalogues of Folio Fine Art "the quality of the leaves is extremely high" Maggs Brothers "of a very high quality" and Alan Thomas "of exquisite quality". Regular leaves from the Llangattock Breviary come on the market with some frequency but ones with historiation do not. unknown

Rubrics in red capitals struck with red headings and chapter numeral in red and blue verso with two two-line initials in red or blue with contrasting penwork tendrils extending three-quarters of the length of each column recto WITH AN APPEALING SIX-LINE HISTORIATED "C" DEPICTING KING SOLOMON WITH HIS SWORD the figure on a burnished gold background delicately embellished with white scrollwork the initial executed in pink and blue with white tracery. One tiny fore-edge tear fore margin of verso with one-inch square glue stain from older repair to very small hole the initial with minuscule loss of gilt just at the top of the king's head otherwise in fine condition the leaf clean fresh and bright the initial detailed and attractive and the margins very generous. This excerpt from what is called in the Protestant canon the Second Book of Chronicles tells of King Solomon's plans to build a temple using the finest materials obtainable. The wise king appears in our initial sitting before a wall painted in gold and patterned with scrolling vines a design feature common to many historiated initials but also perhaps not coincidentally indicative of his great wealth. In the first chapter of this book Solomon asks the Lord only for wisdom and so appropriately he is shown here holding the sword of justice the massive blade resting against his shoulder. His bearded face shown in three-quarter view wears a solemn thoughtful expression which the artist has skillfully suggested with a few sensitive lines. In addition to its attractive decoration our leaf has the bonus of noticeably ample margins an uncommon luxury in portable Bibles such as this one. unknown

TEXT FROM THE OPENING OF II MACCABEES
Southern France perhaps Bordeaux ca. 1300. 330 x 229 mm. 13 x 9". Double column 40 lines of text in an extraordinarily fine gothic book hand. Attractively matted. Rubrics in red capitals struck with red headlines and chapter number in red and blue one two-line initial in blue with elaborate red and blue penwork extending the full length of the leaf in the inner margin and the recto WITH A MAGNIFICENT HISTORIATED "F" SHOWING JUDAS MACCABEUS AND THREE OTHERS STANDING BEFORE GOD Judas at the front of the group gesturing with a finger of one hand pointing at the other hand see below the scene set against a magenta and white tessellated background the body of the initial in blue pink and white with burnished gold disks the historiated part of the initial measuring approximately 42 mm. square but with a wide descender several lines long the letter terminating near the top of the middle margin with a leafy stalk surmounted by a pensive scrawny bird. A tiny bit of wrinkling at one lower corner otherwise REMARKABLY WELL PRESERVED ESPECIALLY BRIGHT CLEAN AND FRESH WITH THE INITIAL IN PRISTINE CONDITION. This and the next item are two of the most beautiful Bible leaves we have ever offered for sale and not surprisingly they come with distinguished provenance. The condition could not be any better and the artistic accomplishment here is difficult to overpraise. The painter who has obviously done his work with great care and confidence has produced a scene characterized by sharply defined figures impressive precision in the application of paint and an intelligent design all of which add up to an unusually high level of aesthetic achievement especially for the time period. The iconography here is intriguing. The opening chapter of II Machabees contains a letter from Judas Maccabeus and leaders of the Jewish community in Jerusalem inviting the Jews of Egypt to join in celebrating a festival of thanksgiving which became the holiday known today as Hanukkah commemorating the liberation of Jerusalem from Syrian control and the reconsecration of the Temple after its desecration by Antiochus IV. In French and Italian illuminated Bibles of the 13th century the conventional historiated initial for II Machabees depicts a messenger either receiving the letter in Jerusalem or delivering it in Egypt. Our miniature by contrast presents an unusual and perhaps original tableaux. Architectural elements at the right edge represent the newly rededicated Temple as an image of God looks out benevolently from beneath the soffit of the building's cornice in the direction of four figures at the left side apparently representing Judas Maccabeus and three of the others who jointly authored the letter with him. The arrangement of the hands of the Judas figure suggests a speaking gesture though whether addressing thanksgiving to God or related somehow to the contents of the letter is unclear. Our leaf was once part of a spectacular Bible in the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps his MS 2506 and later owned by Sir Alfred Chester Beatty his MS W.173. Phillipps bought the manuscript in the 1820s from Thomas Thorpe who had purchased it in Spain. The Bordeaux origin is bolstered by the presence in the original volume of two 16th century inscriptions by monks from that city. Phillipps' heirs sold the Bible privately to Beatty in 1921 and it was sold in his sale at Sotheby's on 24 June 1969 to Alan Thomas then bought in turn by Duschnes of New York and broken up. Phillipps 1792-1872 began collecting books with his schoolboy allowance and once he succeeded to his father's large estate he made collecting the chief business of his life eventually becoming simply the greatest collector of manuscripts in history. His collection reached the staggering number of 60000 manuscripts and approximately 1000 incunabula as well as many other printed books old and new. By the time he was 35 the American later British and then Irish engineer Beatty 1875-1968 had made a fortune in copper mining. But the years in the mines where he started at the bottom caused serious harm to his lungs and he spent considerable time travelling to salubrious climates to repair his health. Cairo in particular became a second home and a location from which he began a serious career in collecting manuscripts at first Islamic and then Western accumulating in the end enough material to fill a catalogue of some 38 volumes. According to George Edwards' article in "Grolier 2000" Beatty "had the highest standards of quality and condition" as a collector a claim that is validated by the present leaf. unknown

TEXT FROM THE COMMON OF APOSTLES
Italy perhaps Tuscany 15th century but with a 20th century miniature. 591 x 406 mm. 23 1/4 x 16". Five lines of text beneath five four-line staves of music the text in a very large clean gothic book hand. Rubrics in red three large initials painted in red or blue with elaborate penwork in the contrasting color the verso WITH A FINE MODERN REPLICA HISTORIATED INITIAL showing a young strong dark-skinned figure who appears to be Christ considerable leafy foliage emanating from the letter up and down the left margin the initial measuring approximately 95 x 110 mm. Lower outer corner ragged the hair side of the leaf with minor overall darkening slight soiling and faint wrinkling but a leaf with no serious problems and generally pleasing especially because the initial is in perfect condition. Of the modern initials found on this and the previous leaf the present one is clearly the best. Not only do we note how carefully the paint has been applied here but we sense a power and dynamism in the portrayal that makes this historiation much different from the other examples. In such details as the thickness of the figure's neck and the profundity of his gaze we feel the artist's visual message--that this is a strong devoted and determined Christ--communicated with powerful emotional impact. unknown

Northeastern France probably Arras late 15th century. 146 x 95 mm. 5 3/4 x 3 3/4". Single column 15 lines in a pleasing bâtarde hand. Rubrics in red one-line initials in brushed gold on a red ground EACH SIDE OF LEAF WITH A BRUSHED GOLD PANEL BORDER WITH VERY PRETTY ILLUSIONISTIC FLOWERS; WITH TWO SMALL MINIATURES measuring approximately 40 x 25 mm. one on each side depicting the Resurrection and the Holy Spirit. Headlines written in French in a later 18th century calligraphic hand. Light soiling a couple tiny flakes of paint on body of Christ otherwise an excellent specimen generally clean and smooth with ample margins winning decoration and shining gold. From a charmingly decorated 15th century prayer book this lovely leaf offers the opportunity to acquire two miniatures and considerable gold ornamentation at an attainable price. The text here comes from prayers addressed to the Son and Holy Spirit which would have been preceeded by a prayer to God to complete the Trinity. One side depicts the Resurrection of Christ whose body is pictured here emerging from a tomb his wounds still clearly visible; and the opposite side shows the image of a dove as messanger of the Holy Spirit emitting rays of gold and appearing to glow on the page.
