In English and Spanish. First edition limited to 1000 copies.<br /><br />At the time of Spanish conquests Mexico City comprised Tenochtitlan and Tlatelolco at the same time. Since then the city extended from north to south from the north border of Tlatelolco to the swamps which by that time were gradually disappearing to the west the city ended more or less at the present location of Bucareli Street. It was connected to the mainland by causeways leading north south and west of the city. These causeways were interrupted by bridges that allowed canoes and other traffic to pass freely. The bridges could be pulled away if necessary to defend the city. The city was interlaced with a series of canals so that all sections of the city could be visited either on foot or via canoe. Lake Texcoco was the largest of the five interconnected lakes. Since it formed in an endorheic basin lake Lake Texcoco was brackish. During the reign of Moctezuma I the "levee of Nezahualcoyotl" was constructed reputedly designed by Nezahualcoyotl. Estimated to be 7.5 to 9.9 miles in length the levee was completed circa 1453; the levee kept the spring-fed fresh water in the waters around Tenochtitlan and kept the brackish waters beyond the dike to the east. Two double aqueducts each more than 2.5 miles long and made of terracotta provided the city with fresh water from the springs at Chapultepec. This was intended mainly for cleaning and washing. For drinking water from mountain springs was preferred. Most of the population liked to bathe twice a day; Moctezuma was said to take four baths a day. As soap they used the root of a plant called copalxocotl Saponaria americana; to clean their clothes they used the root of metl Agave americana. Also the upper classes and pregnant women enjoyed the temazcalli. Similar to a sauna bath it is still used in the south of Mexico. ‎* Erste Ausgabe ! ----- Friedrich Wilhelm Ritschl (* 6. April 1806 in Großvargula, Fürstentum Erfurt; ? 9. November 1876 in Leipzig) war ein deutscher Altphilologe in Halle, Breslau, Bonn und Leipzig. Er gilt als Begründer der Bonner Schule der Klassischen Philologie, die sich vornehmlich der Textkritik widmete. Er erforschte die Grundlagen des Altlatein und verfasste eine kaum überschaubare Fülle an Arbeiten über die Sprachen, die Kultur und die Dichter der Antike. Friedrich Ritschl war Sohn eines evangelischen Pfarrers. Seine Vorfahren entstammten dem ursprünglich böhmischen Rittergeschlecht Ritschl von Hartenbach. Er besuchte die Gymnasien in Erfurt und Wittenberg und studierte ab 1825 Philologie an der Universität Leipzig, wo er im Corps Lusatia aktiv war. 1826 wechselte er an die Friedrichs-Universität Halle. Sie promovierte ihn 1829 zum Dr. phil. Mit 27 Jahren wurde er als Professor an die Schlesische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität berufen. Für ihn prägend war eine längere Studienreise nach Italien 1836/37, auf der er über die Philologie hinausgehend einen ganzheitlichen Zugang zur Kultur, Kunst und Sprache der Antike fand. Im Frühjahr 1839 ging er an die Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität. Dort lehrte er fast 26 Jahre lang Klassische Philologie. 1846/47 amtierte er als Rektor der Universität. Er dominierte die philologische Fakultät, die er nominell gemeinsam mit Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker führte. Als Nachfolger von Welcker übernahm er 1854 die Universitäts-Bibliothek. Im selben Jahr wurde er zum korrespondierenden Mitglied der Göttinger Akademie der Wissenschaften gewählt. Mit Otto Jahn leitete er bis 1861 das Akademische Kunstmuseum Bonn. Der gute Ruf seiner Seminare zog viele Studenten an, die später selbst berühmte Gelehrte wurden. 1867 wurde Ritschl in die Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres und 1868 in die American Academy of Arts and Sciences gewählt. Zu seinen hervorragenden Schülern in Bonn und später in Leipzig gehörten u. a Otto Benndorf, Jacob Bernays, Franz Bücheler, Georg Curtius, Wolfgang Hubner, Wilhelm Ihne, Franz Emil Jungmann, Karl Heinrich Keck, Ottokar Lorenz, Friedrich Nietzsche, Otto Ribbeck, August Schleicher, Heinrich Stürenburg, Johannes Vahlen, Diederich Volkmann und Ernst Windisch. Nach Konflikten mit Otto Jahn und Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker, was als ?Bonner Philologenkrieg? in die Universitätsgeschichte der Bonner Universität einging und zum Politikum hinsichtlich der Berufungsverhandlungen um seine Nachfolge wurde verließ er 1865 das preußische Bonn und nahm im Königreich Sachsen eine Professur an der Universität Leipzig an. Sein wohl bekanntester Student, in Bonn sowie in Leipzig, war Friedrich Nietzsche, dessen akademische Laufbahn er besonders förderte und dem er zur ersten Professur in Basel verhalf. Friedrich Ritschl lehrte in Leipzig noch bis 1875 und starb dort im Alter von 70 Jahren. Er wurde im Ehrengrab der Universität Leipzig in der V. Abteilung des Neuen Johannisfriedhofs beerdigt. ‎Édition originale et posthume de Johann Rocbeck, philosophe suédois, élevé dans la religion reformée, il se convertit et devient jésuite en 1704. On lui doit cette apologie du suicide Exercitatio philosophica de morte voluntaria (Usage philosophique de la mort volontaire, 1736) publiée à titre posthume et qui souleva un grand débat dans l’Europe des Lumières, surtout après son propre suicide par noyade dans la Weser. L’ouvrage qui la défend est l’un des plus célèbres sur le sujet de son temps et il a eu une influence, entre autres, sur Jean-Jacques Rousseau et sur Voltaire. Le premier évoquera la question dans la lettre vingt-et-un de la troisième partie de la Nouvelle Héloïse lorsque le héros contemple un moment l’idée du suicide après que Julie lui a demandé de ne plus lui écrire, tandis que le second mentionne nommément Robeck, comme « professeur allemand » de Candide, ou l’Optimisme.
