‎Neveu du Pape Urbain VIII, Francesco Barberini (1597-1679) fut créé cardinal au consistoire du 2 octobre 1623 pour le titre de Sainte-Agathe des Goths, puis nommé légat d'Avignon, charge qu'il exerça jusqu'en 1633. La coadjutorerie était à Avignon un moyen très employé pour permettre la transmission d'un office à un bénéficiaire agréé par le titulaire, empêchant que l'office ne soit remis en circulation à la mort ou à la démission de son détenteur. Ce procédé fit l'objet de cassations récurrentes, mais persista cependant. ‎La première édition de cette oeuvre majeure d'histoire ecclésiastique était parue de 1588 à 1607 à l'adresse de Rome et composait une série de 12 volumes in-folio, couvrant la période de la naissance du Christ à l'année 1198 seulement (soit celle de l'avènement d'Innocent III). La mort du cardinal Baronio cette même année 1607 avait arrêté la publication.Depuis, les rééditions s'étaient succédé ; la nôtre, de loin la meilleure qui ait été donnée, se décline en quatre parties différentes, et forme théoriquement un ensemble de 38 volumes. En fait, le texte de Baronius, enrichi à leur place chronologique des observations critiques de Pagi (publiées originellement en 1705 en 4 volumes), correspond aux 19 premiers volumes ; les 15 suivants, parus de 1747 à 1756, sont occupés par la continuation donnée par Odorico Rainaldi en 1646-1677, et prolongeant le récit de 1198 à 1565, mais qui ne peut en aucun cas être considérée comme oeuvre de Baronio. Enfin, il existe un volume d'appareil critique (1740, il est joint à notre série), et trois volumes d'index, parus de 1757 à 1759. Mit rot-schwarz gedrucktem Vortitel, gestochenem Kupfertitel nach Rubens gestochen von Cornelius Galle dem Älteren, einer Kupfertafel mit dem Portrait Urbans VIII. ebenfalls gestochen von Galle, 14 Holzschnittvignetten, Wappenholzschnitt Papst Urbans VIII., Druckermarke in Holzschnitt nach einem Entwurf von Rubens und einigen Holzschnittinitialen. Die Textseiten und Vignetten sind jeweils umrahmt von feinen roten Linien, die Zwischentitel mit feinen roten Linien unterstrichen. Ursprünglicher, aufkaschierter Lederbezug berieben und mit Fehlstellen, Titelei leicht staubschmutzig und etwas fleckig, Seiten ansonsten nur leicht gebräunt, wenige Seiten minimal stockfleckig und selten etwas fingerfleckig, etwa ab Seite 127 immer wieder auftauchender, blasser Wasserrand (vorwiegend im weißen Rand und nur gering nachgebräunt, in einzelnen Fällen jedoch weit in den Satzspiegel hineinreichend und etwas stärker gedunkelt), rote Linien daher zum Teil etwas verwaschen und mit Abklatsch auf der nächsten Seite, wenige Seiten in den Ecken etwas knickspurig. Insgesamt gutes und noch immer ansprechendes Exemplar in bibliophiler Ausstattung. Restored leather binding of the times on 5 bands with gilt-stamped title on red leather spine label, renewed endpapers and all-round red edges. 2nd edition. Edition in Latin. Graesse I, 289. With red and black printed half-title, engraved copper title after Rubens by Cornelius Galle the Elder, a copper plate with the portrait of Urban VIII also engraved by Galle, 14 woodcut vignettes, woodcut coat of arms of Pope Urban VIII, printer's mark in woodcut after a design by Rubens and some woodcut initials. The text pages and vignettes are each framed by thin red lines, the intertitles underlined with thin red lines. Original, laminated leather cover rubbed and with losses, title page slightly dust-soiled and somewhat stained, pages otherwise only slightly darkened, a few pages minimally foxed and very few a little finger-stained, pale tidemark appearing repeatedly from about page 127 onwards (mainly in the white margin and only slightly darkened, in individual cases, however, extending far into the type area and a bit more darkened), red lines therefore somewhat washed out in places and with an ink set-off on the next page, a few pages with light crease marks in the corners. Overall a good and still attractive copy in bibliophilic condition.‎

Fasti, a poem about the holidays and feast days of the Roman calendar, was written while Ovid was in Rome and revised while he was in exile on the barbarian frontier, banished by Augustus from the cultured society of Rome. Ovid's work in exile evinces complicated motives; he addresses Augustus and begs him to lift the despised exile, but at the same time covertly critiques Augustus's "New Rome. " Although recent scholarship has concentrated on the oppositions between poet and ruler revealed in Ovid's work, Barchiesi's analysis transcends the opposition of pro-Augustan or anti-Augustan readings. In a lively, vigorous narrative that relies on close textual analysis, Barchiesi underscores the important poetic choices as well as the political considerations made by Ovid in Fasti. Ultimately, his analysis leads us to a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between patrons and poets.
