Rarámuri: A Tarahumara Colonial Chronicle 1607-1791
xii144 pages with maps facsimiles figures glossary bibliography and index. Royal octavo 9 1/2" x 7" bound in original publisher's wrappers.  inscribed First edition. The Rarámuri or Tarahumara are a Native American people of northwestern Mexico who are renowned for their long-distance running ability. In their language the term rarámuri refers specifically to the men women are referred to as mukà individually and as omugà or igómale collectively. Originally inhabitants of much of the state of Chihuahua the Rarámuri retreated to the high sierras and canyons such as the Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madre Occidental on the arrival of Spanish explorers in the 16th century. The area of the Sierra Madre Occidental which they now inhabit is often called the Sierra Tarahumara because of their presence. The Raramuri were introduced to the Spanish in the 1500s and the Spanish called them the Tarahumara. By the early 17th century the Spanish had established mines in Tarahumara territory and made some slave raids to obtain mine slaves. Jesuit Juan Fonte established a mission San Pablo Balleza at the southern end of Tarahumara territory expanding from missionary work with the Tepehuan to the south. The Tepehuan's violent resistance to Spanish incursion in 1616 killed Fonte and closed the mission for over a decade. The discovery of the mines of Parral Chihuahua in 1631 increased Spanish presence in Tarahuama lands bringing more slave raids and Jesuit missionaries. Missions were established at Las Bocas Huejotitlan San Felipe and Satevo.5 In 1648 the Tarahumara waged war against the Spanish. They met at Fariagic and then destroyed the mission of San Francisco de Borja. Two of the leaders of this attack were captured by the Spanish and executed. Shortly after the Spanish established Villa de Aguilar in the heart of the upper Tarahumara county. From then on the Tarahumara split into two groups. Those in the lower missions continued to move into the general Christian population and largely lost their tribal identity. Those in the upper areas went to war under the leadership of Tepórame and others. This drove the Jesuits and Spanish settlers from the area. The Jesuits returned in the 1670s and baptized thousands of Tarahumara but these people retained a separate identity. Tepórame was executed by the Spanish in 1690.6 From 1696 to 1698 the Tarahumara again waged war against the Spanish but were defeated.  By 1753 the lower Tarahumara missions were turned over to secular priests and in 1767 the Jesuits were expelled in Spanish territories. Most missions in Tarahumara ceased to operate7 or were turned over to Franciscans. Despite devoted and enthusiastic efforts the Franciscans could not match the Jesuits’ feats and the missions declined. The Jesuits reestablished the missions in the early 20th century.  Condition: Head corner hinge stained previous owner's name and inscribed on half title corners bumped else about very good. Thomas E. Burman.
Latince Kur'an çevirileri. Translation: Nisan Alici.
As New English Paperback. Pbo. Mint. Roy. 8vo. 288 p. In Turkish edition. Most of what we know about attitudes toward Islam in the medieval and early modern West has been based on polemical treatises against Islam written by Christian scholars preoccupied with defending their own faith and attacking the doctrines of others. Christian readings of the Qur'an have in consequence typically been depicted as tedious and one-dimensional exercises in anti-Islamic hostility. In Reading the Qur'an in Latin Christendom, 1140-1560, Thomas E. Burman looks instead to a different set of sources: the Latin translations of the Qur'an made by European scholars and the manuscripts and early printed books in which these translations circulated. Using these largely unexplored materials, Burman argues that the reading of the Qur'an in Western Europe was much more complex. While their reading efforts were certainly often focused on attacking Islam, scholars of the period turned out to be equally interested in a whole range of grammatical, lexical, and interpretive problems presented by the text. Indeed, these two approaches were interconnected: attacking the Qur'an often required sophisticated explorations of difficult Arabic grammatical problems. Furthermore, while most readers explicitly denounced the Qur'an as a fraud, translations of the book are sometimes inserted into the standard manuscript format of Christian Bibles and other prestigious Latin texts (small, centered blocks of text surrounded by commentary) or in manuscripts embellished with beautiful decorated initials and elegant calligraphy for the pleasure of wealthy collectors. Addressing Christian-Muslim relations generally, as well as the histories of reading and the book, Burman offers a much fuller picture of how Europeans read the sacred text of Islam than we have previously had.

VIRGIL AND THE AUGUSTAN RECEPTION
Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). Light bump to lower edge of front board. DJ has minor edgewear with 1 small tear. ; This book examines the ideological reception of Virgil at specific moments in the past two millennia. It focuses on the emperor Augustus in the poetry of Virgil, detects in the poets and grammarians of antiquity pro- and anti-Augustan readings, studies Dryden's 1697 Royalist translation, and also naive American translation. It scrutinizes nineteenth-century philology's rewriting or excision of troubling readings, and covers readings by both supporters and opponents of fascism and National Socialism. Finally it examines how successive ages have made the Aeneid conform to their upbeat expectations of this poet. ; 346 pages

READING VIRGIL AND HIS TEXTS Studies in Intertextuality
1 corner bumped. Minor shelfwear. Light pencil marginalia to a couple of pages. DJ has some minor creasing. ; There has long been vital interest in the ways that texts affect each other--through translation, imitation, parody, and other forms of emulation and subversion. Throughout the last two millennia, the Virgilian text has created its own intertextual heritage, persisting in the works of Eliot, Frost, Lowell, and Heaney. Richard F. Thomas's new volume demonstrates that such control and manipulation of the inherited tradition is to be found with great intensity in the very author who, in turn, created his own complex tradition. The articles and notes included in this volume have been selected for their diachronic aspect in addition to the synchronic status they had in their original context. Dealing with the intricate ways in which Virgil, and in the introductory chapter his predecessor Catullus, manipulated and appropriated their inherited Greek and Roman literary tradition, this book presents a coherent profile, through these detailed studies, of the mechanics of one of the most dynamic periods in the literary history of any culture. Richard Thomas--one of the most important voices in Latin literary studies today--shows little anxiety about objections to authorial intentionality. Throughout there is a working assumption that intertextual connections can be established and, further, that functions and purposes, even intended ones, may be inferred from those connections. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of Greek and Latin literature but will also be of great value to students of medieval, Renaissance, and early modern vernacular literatures, most of whose poets see themselves as closely connected to Virgil. ; 360 pages

The People of Mexico: Who They Are and How They Live
428 pages including index. Octavo 8" x 5 1/2" bound in original navy blue cloth with gold lettering to cover and spine. From the library of George M Foster. Assumed first edition.FROM THE PREFACE:for minute descriptions of her pains and aches nor yet for elaborate explanations of her afflictions and suggested panaceas. Our deficiency has been rather in understanding of the patient how she is made and how she has been living and thinking and in honest appraisal of her antecedents. The information vital to such understanding has been almost inaccessible. Much was scattered through many books from government statistics to records of travel but even there surprisingly little of it has existed in easily assimilated form. Writing and talking of Mexico as I have done for nearly twenty years I have come to feel that there is no greater single need of those who would understand the Mexican situation of yesterday and today and tomorrow as well than a work that strives seriously to set down and interpret the fundamentals of the national anatomy. It is that need which this book seeks to fill.George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Apud haeredes Arnoldi Birckmani. Coloniae [Koln]: 1560. / BOUND WITH / 3). Arnoldus Vesalien
Three works bound in one. 1). pp. [353] Adams 2201; 2). ff. 63, [1]; 3). ff. 155. 24 mo. 120 mm. Attractive contemporary full leather binding over beveled oak boards. Leather worn smooth, though some the old armorial design can be made out. Unusual original twisted metal clasps. Gauphered gilt edges. The first of these works is by St. Augustine (354-430) an early Christian theologian and philosopher from Numidia whose writings influenced the development of Western Christianity and Western philosophy. He was the bishop of Hippo Regius in north Africa and is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers in Western Christianity for his writings in the Patristic Era. Among his most important works are 'The City of God'; 'On Christian Doctrine' [included here]; and 'Confessions.' The second title is by St. Vincent of Lerins, who died ca. 445. He was a Gallic monk and author of important early Christian writings. He was probably a proponent of semipelagianism and opposed the Augustine model of grace. The third is by Arnoldus Vesaliensis (Arnold Haldrein), (1484-1534). He was a German Humanist. Here he is joined with Peter Lombard (1096-1160), a scholastic theologian, Bishop of Paris, and author of Four Books of Sentences, which became the standard textbook of theology. Each of these editions are very scarce, and there are only a handful of examples in libraries worldwide. A treasured collection in a wonderful contemporary binding. CHEST 2/1
