The first edition of his well-known 'History of Fiction' was published at Edinburgh in 1814. Dunlop was appointed Sheriff Depute of the Shire of Renfrew, in 1816. This office he retained until his death. In 1823 he produced the first two volumes of this 'History of Roman Literature' which is noticeable for useful abstracts of the writings described, and illustrations drawn from modern European literatures. He died at Edinburgh in February 1842. "People sometimes wondered how so feeble and so retired a creature could venture as a penal magistrate among the strong sailors of Greenock or the ill fed rebels of precarious Paisley; but he did his duty among them very well. (In appearance he was exceedingly like a little, old, gray cuddy) a nice kindly body, with a clear, soft Scotch voice" - Henry Cockburn. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W118

Andres Perez de Ribas: Pioneer Black Robes of The West Coast Administrator Historian
viii175pp with appendixes bibliography and index. Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6 1/4" issued in green cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover. Edited by John J Meng. United States Catholic Historical Society Monograph Series XXV. First edition.
A pioneer missionary historian of north-western Mexico; born at Cordova Spain 1576; died in Mexico 26 March 1655. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1602 coming at once to America and finishing his novitiate in Mexico in 1604. In the same year he was sent to undertake the Christianization of the Ahome and Suaqui of northern Sinaloa of whom the former were friendly and anxious for teachers while the latter had just been brought to submission after a hard campaign. He succeeded so well that within a year he had both tribes gathered into regular towns each with a well-built church while all of the Ahome and a large part of the Suaqui had been baptized. The two tribes together numbered about 10000 souls. In 1613 being then superior of the Sinaloa district he was instrumental in procuring the submission of a hostile mountain tribe. In 1617 in company with other Jesuit missionaries whom he had brought from Mexico City he began the conversion of the powerful and largely hostile Yaqui tribe q.v. of Sonora estimated at 30000 souls with such success that within a few years most of them had been gathered into orderly town communities. In 1620 he was recalled to Mexico to assist in the college being ultimately appointed provincial which post he held for several years. After a visit to Rome in 1643 to take part in the election of a general of the order he devoted himself chiefly to study and writing until his death. He left numerous works religious and historical most of which are still in manuscript but his reputation as an historian rests secure upon his history of the Jesuit missions of Mexico published at Madrid in 1645 one year after its completion under the title: Historia de los Triunfos de Nuestra Santa Fe entre gentes las ms brbaras . . . conseguidos por los soldados de la milicia de Ia Compaa de Jess en las misiones de la Provincia de Nueva-Espaa. Of this work Bancroft says: "It is a complete history of Jesuit work in Nueva Vizcaya practically the only history the country had from 1590 to 1644 written not only by a contemporary author but by a prominent actor in the events narrated who had access to all the voluminous correspondence of his order comparatively few of which documents have been preserved. In short Ribas wrote under the most favourable circumstances and made good use of his opportunities."

Condition:

Spine gilt dulled points gently rubbed. Juan Antonio Balthasar Padre Visitador to the Sonora Frontier 1744-1745. Two Original Reports
iii1226 pages with fold out pocket map and fold out map bound in. Royal octavo 9 1/2" x 6 1/4" bound in grey cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial cross and gilt lettering to cover and deckled edges. Memoriam by John Francis Bannon. Arizona Pioneers' Historical Society. Limited to 600 copies. First edition.

The early decades of the eighteenth century saw considerable expansion of Jesuit frontiers in northern Mexico and the addition of a new sector in Baja California. Each new advance increased the problems of communications between the field and headquarters in Mexico City and in that measure severely threatened the efficiency of the mission system. Back in the previous century in an attempt to bridge the broadening gap between superior and subject the office of Padre Visitador was adapted to frontier conditions. Reports made by the visitors such as the two presented here are among the most enlightening and valuable documents in mission history. They are tenchant digests of on-the-spot observations. Much fascinating material appears in their pages: comments on the problems encountered in the reduction of the northern Indians; evaluations of the potential of untouched heathendom beyond the existing line of advance; analyses of relations often acrimonious between the padres and civil authorities; and at times unvarnished comments on the character and conduct of the missionaries themselves. Had it not been for the confiscation of Jesuit archives which followed the expulsion of the Black Robes from Spanish possessions in the 1760's some of these documents such as the Second Report of Juan Antonio Blathasar might never have been divulged. Both of his reports are highly interesting and are here published for the first time. The late Peter Masten Dunne outstanding authority on early Jesuit mission history in New Spain has translated and annotated the reports here presented. The documentary material has been excellently prefaced by a series of background chapters on the West Coast missions the office of padre visitor biographical information on Balthasar and some of the main personalities figuring in the reports and a short commentary on the documents themselves relating them to other pieces of similar character in the Jesuit sources.

Condition:

Book plate on front paste down corners bumped.
