Gold, Barbara K.
LITERARY AND ARTISTIC PATRONAGE IN ANCIENT ROME
Light dust-soiling to top of textblock. Scholar's name to ffep (G. P. Goold). A few pencil notes by him. DJ spine is a bit browned. ; Virgil, Horace, Catullus, Propertius—these are just a few of the poets whose work we would be without today were it not for the wealthy and powerful patrons upon whose support the Roman cultural establishment so greatly depended. Who were these patrons? What benefits did they give, to whom, and why? What effect did the support of such men as Maecenas and Pompey have on the lives and work of those who looked to them for aid? These questions and others are addressed in this volume, which explores all the important aspects of patronage—a topic crucial to the study of literature and art from Homer to the present day. The subject is approached from various vantage points: literary, artistic, historical. The essayists reach conclusions that dispel the many misconceptions about Roman patronage derived from seventeenth- and eighteenth-century models in England and Europe. An understanding of the workings of patronage is indispensable in helping us see how the Roman cultural establishment functioned in the four centuries of its flourishing and also in helping us read and enjoy specific poems and works of art. A book for all concerned with classical literature, art, and social history, Literary and Artistic Patronage in Ancient Rome not only deepens our understanding of the ancient world but also suggests important avenues for future exploration. ; 200 pages

CONSTRUCTING LITERATURE IN THE ROMAN REPUBLIC
Tiny stain to rear endpaper else book is fine. Light rubbing and shelfwear to DJ. ; How the Romans came to have a literature reflecting native and foreign impulses, and how it formed a legacy for subsequent generations have become central questions in the cultural history of the Republic. This book explores the development of Roman literary sensibility from early interest in epic and drama, through invention of satire and eventual enshrining of books in public collections important to Horace and Ovid. The "early" literature is seen to be a product less of the mid-Republic, when poetic texts began to circulate, than of the late Republic, when they were systematically collected and canonized. ; 262 pages

EPIC IN REPUBLICAN ROME
Gift inscription from author to R. E. Fantham on ffep. Very minor shelfwear to book. DJ has a bit of shelfwear. ; This book is a major new study of the epic poetry of Republican Rome. Goldberg treats the creators of these now-fragmentary works not simply as predecessors of Vergil, but as pioneers and poets in their own right. But Goldberg goes beyond practical criticism, exploring in the literary experiments of Andronicus, Naevius, Ennius, and Cicero issues of poetry and patronage, cultural assimilation and national ideology, modeling and originality that both come to characterize Roman literature of all periods and continue to shape modern responses to that literature. What emerges from Goldberg's study is both a fresh perspective on Vergil's achievement and new insights into the cultural dynamics of second-century Rome. ; 196 pages; Signed by Author

pp. 76, 630, [56] + Engraved frontis. Title page printed in red and black. 16 mo. 170 mm. Early vellum backed paste paper boards binding. Latin text with some Hebrew. Early autograph ownership of Jno. Bliss Hibbins. Hardbound. Very Good. The title translates roughly as: Moses and Aaron, civil and ecclesiastical rites, used by the ancient Hebrews observed, and at large opened, for the clearing of many obscure texts thoughout the whole scripture, which texts are now added to the end of the book : wherein likewise is shewed what customs the Hebrews borrowed from heathen people, and that many heathenish customs, originally, have been unwarrantable imitations of the Hebrews. Thomas Godwyn (ca. 1587-1642) was an English scholar who became the first fellow of the newly founded Pembroke College, Oxford (1624), became chaplain to the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and rector of Brightwell, Berkshire (1626-1643). The translator into Latin, Johan Heinrich Reitz (1655-1720) was born near Bacharach on the Rhine. In Bremen, he came into contact with the ideas of the Pietist Movement in the German Church. In 1681, he received his first appointment as Pfarrer or pastor in the Reformed Church of the Palatinate in Freinsheim. At this time he came under the personal influence of the Pietist Philip Jakob Spener. It was in Freinsheim that he produced this which established his name in the academic world. W154
