‎Marti, Jose and Lorenzo Amengual‎

‎La Edad De Oro‎

‎This is a near fine hardcover copy in white glazed boards printed in black, with a colorful oval image of Jose Marti on the front cover. Completely clean inside and out. Text in Spanish. This book reunites the four children's books that Jose Marti (1853-1895) wrote while he was in New York during the 1880's. According to Marti, the intention behind the publication of "La edad de oro" was "so that American children may know how people used to live, and how they live nowadays, in America and in other countries; how many things are made, such as glass and iron, steam engines and suspension bridges and electric light; so that when a child sees a coloured stone he will know why the stone is coloured. We shall tell them about everything which is done in factories, where things happen which are stranger and more interesting than the magic in fairy stories. These things are real magic, more marvelous than any. We write for children because it is they who know how to love, because it is children who are the hope for the world". This edition is illustrated in color by Lorenzo Amengual in a style that recalls Push Pin Studios of the 1960's and 70's. Hot colors like pinks, magentas, blues and yellows overlay old engravings, sometimes portraits of Marti's three heroes: Simon Bolivar, San Martin and Hidalgo. The illustrations look like silkscreens and were printed by Miguel Pilato, Buenos Aires. 10" high X 7" wide, 114 pages.‎

‎Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). Else book is fine. ; One of literature's greatest satirists, Martial earned his livelihood by excoriating the follies and vices of Roman society and its emperors, and set a pattern that satirists have admired across the ages. For the first time, readers can enjoy an English translation of these rhymes that does not sacrifice the cleverly constructed effects of Martial's short and shapely thrusts. ‎Daughters of the Conquistadores: Women of the Viceroyaltiy of Peru‎

‎xiii354 pages with frontispiece illustrations bibliography and index. Royal octavo 9 1/2" x 6 1/4" bound in original tan cloth with silver lettering to spine. First edition.

In 1498 Queen Isabella of Spain gave license to thirty women to join Columbus on his third voyage to the New World. During the first part of the sixteenth century while Francisco Pizarro conquered the Incas women came to "the Indies" to find husbands and begin a new life and by mid-century they numbered nearly one thousand. Although the Spanish conquest of Peru has traditionally be regarded as an all-male endeavor Daughters of the Conquistadores shows that from the beginning women played a significant role in bringing Spanish culture to Latin America. Martín also shows that contrary to the view of colonial women as passive and downtrodden many achieved a degree of personal freedom unknown in the Old World. With a wealth of detail Martín portrays the lives of many remarkable women of colonial Peru. He describes the system of education for girls and the institution of marriage in a society characterized by the ideals of Don Juanism and marianism-both factors in the great popularity of the nunneries during the seventeenth and eighteenth century. Dominated by her father and husband the average woman-daughters wife divorciada or concubine-had little independence and many chose instead to be "spouses of the Lord." They did not however necessarily opt for a life of ascetic denial silence and prayer. Martín shows that life within the nunneries especially the five conventos grandes was often fast-paced and exciting if not at times outright violent.

Condition:

Jacket spine sunned head edge sunned some closed tears at edges else a better than very good copy in a very good jacket. ‎REDEEMING THE TEXT Latin Poetry and the Hermeneutics of Reception‎

‎Minor shelfwear. Light bump to 1 corner. ; This book applies some of the procedures of modern critical theory to the interpretation of Latin poetry. The author argues for an approach that sees the meaning of a text as always and necessarily involved in the process of "reception," that is the way it has been read and interpreted from the time of its composition down to the present day. A study of its reception-history facilitates novel and more profitable ways of reading. He illustrates his approach with exemplary readings of Virgil, Ovid, Horace and Lucan. ; Roman Literature And Its Contexts; 8.1 X 5.3 X 0.6 inches; 135 pages‎

‎Monseñor Munguia y Sus Escritos: Obras Completa‎

‎245 pages. Thick octavo 9" x 6 3/4" bound in publisher's original wrappers. Colleccion "Estudios Michoacanos" number VIII. First published in 1870. Bishop Clemente de Jesús Munguía 1810-1868 one of the most influential yet least-known ecclesiastical intellectuals of the period. A lawyer by profession Clemente Munguía was first professor and then rector of the Morelia diocesan seminary where he undertook a major reform of the school's curriculum and also composed several textbooks on a variety of subjects including grammar literature rhetoric philosophy theology and law. Appointed Bishop of Michoacán in October 1850 Munguía distinguished himself for his staunch opposition to the state's encroachment on the Church as well as for his insistence on the need for religious intolerance in what he imagined as an "exclusively Catholic" nation. His protests against the 1857 Constitution and the liberal legislation enacted by President Ignacio Comonfort were a key factor in the outbreak of the Civil War of the Reform 1858-1860 and the subsequent French intervention 1862-1867 which resulted in the separation of Church and state and the collapse of Mexican conservatism. Far from the stereotype of a backward and parochial intellectual Munguía was a sophisticated scholar who sought to reconcile Catholicism with the larger currents of thought of the Atlantic Republic of letters. Indeed he believed that the liberal revolution should be countered "with its own weapons" a conviction which first led him to frame the defense of ecclesiastical prerogatives in the language of modern natural law and then to claim for the Church the very power of constitutional interpretation. Although Munguía's ideal of a "Catholic republic" became unfeasible after the liberals' final victory in 1867 his efforts at consolidating ecclesiastical independence paved the way for both the Romanization and the social activism that characterized the Mexican Church during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Condition: Some rippling to front pages lightly soiled else a very good copy. Fimax Publicistas paperback‎
