Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Here James O'Hara shows how the deceptive nature of prophecy in the Aeneid complicates assessment of the poem's attitude toward its hero's achievement and toward the future of Rome under Augustus Caesar. This close study of the language and rhetorical context of the prophecies reveals that they regularly suppress discouraging material: the gods send promising messages to Aeneas and others to spur them on in their struggles, but these struggles often lead to untimely deaths or other disasters only darkly hinted at by the prophecies. O'Hara finds in these prophecies a persistent subtext that both stresses the human cost of Aeneas' mission and casts doubt on Jupiter's promise to Venus of an "endless empire" for the Romans. O'Hara considers the major prophecies that look confidently toward Augustus' Rome from the standpoint of Vergil's readers, who, like the characters within the poem, must struggle with the possibility that the optimism of the prophecies of Rome is undercut by darker material partially suppressed. The study shows that Vergil links the deception of his characters to the deceptiveness of Roman oratory, politics, and religion, and to the artifice of poetry itself. In response to recent debates about whether the Aeneid is optimistic or pessimistic, O'Hara argues that Vergil expresses both the Romans' hope for the peace of a Golden Age under Augustus and their fear that this hope might be illusory. ; 224 pages‎

‎More than obstacles, medieval frontiers - whether geographical, political, military, intellectual or artistic - seem to have been bridges and points of contact. This volume brings together forty-four contributions by specialists of history, history of ideas, medieval philosophy, philology, linguistics, literature as well as manuscript and archival studies. The first uses of the term frontiere in thirteenth-fourteenth-century French were military, referring to the first line of troops in a battle. In architecture it meant the front of a building, and at the end of the fourteenth century it was first used as a geographical term, in Spain specifically about the divide between the Christians and the Muslims. More than obstacles, medieval frontiers - whether geographical, political, military, intellectual or artistic - seem to have been bridges and points of contact. Frontiers was the theme of the Third European Congress of Medieval Studies organised by the FIDEM in Jyvaskyla, Finland, in 2003. True to the nature of the FIDEM, it was highly interdisciplinary, bringing together scholars from all over the world, addressing problems ranging from Byzantine administration to Icelandic vernacular scribal culture, during a week of extraordinary intellectual excitement. Schedi engraver 3 engraved initials numerous red-printed woodcut initials. Occasional light browning. 18th-century Roman gold-tooled red goatskin covers with densely tooled dentelle border built up from leafy plant tools sprigs floral and arabesque tools each cornerpiece enclosing a grid with gold dots blossom tools and dots in central field ornamental centerpiece of large foliate arabesque and dandelion tools spine in six uniformly gold-tooled compartments block-printed pastedown endpapers with flower and fruit design stencil-colored in red green and yellow gilt edges with gauffred border design; upper cover a bit faded and bowed corner bumped a couple of scrapes to lower cover. Provenance: Horace de Landau 1824-1904 bookplate shelfmark no 47854; Vicomte de Cossette armorial bookplate. A rococo binding on a luxuriously printed and illustrated Office of the Virgin from the Salvioni press official printers to the Vatican. The Salvioni press used several workshops sometimes collectively mislabeled as the "Vatican" or "Salvioni" bindery. Those bound for the papal library were finely executed and different binderies can be identified by their tools color of leather and stylistic details. The present pretty but crowded binding decor with its in places overlapping tooling does not seem to belong to the corpus of binderies represented in for example the Vatican Library's 1977 exhibit catalogue of papal bindings. Stylistically it uses types of tools and decoration - the wide "Louis XV" style border and the basketweave cornerpieces - in vogue during the reigns of Clement XIV 1769-1774 and Pius VI 1775-1799. Its decoration is similar for example to binding no. 262 in Legature papali but it is of inferior workmanship and does not use the same tools. It was probably produced in a Roman shop executing many commissions and forced to work quickly although it could even be a provincial binding. Cf. Drawing on previously unexplored primary sources James Officer has now produced a major work that traces the Hispanic roots of southern Arizona and northern Sonora-one which presents the Spanish and Mexican rather than Anglo point of view. Officer records the Hispanic presence from the earliest efforts at colonization on Spain's northwestern frontier through the Spanish and Mexican years of rule thus providing a unique reference on Southwestern history. The heart of the work centers on the early nineteenth century. It explores subjects such as the constant threat posed by hostile Apaches government intrigue and revolution in Sonora and the provincias internas and patterns of land ownership in villages such as Tucson and Tubac. Also covered are the origins of land grants in present-day southern Arizona and the invasion of southern Arizona by American "49ers" as seen from the Mexican point of view.
