John Philips (1676-1709), English poet, was one of the few to write in blank / free verse in an age when the heroic couplet was the standard form. His 'Splendid Shilling' (1701, 1705) is a parody of Milton. 'Cyder' (1708), a utilitarian poem describing the cultivation of apples and the pressing of cider, is modeled after Virgil's 'Georgics'. This is a fine early collection of of Philips' major poems, works that, "written in revolt against the heroic couplet, between the death of Dryden and the appearance of Pope, occupy an important position in the history of English literature." ‎Summary In the age of Augustine, within the classical structures of society, nothing was more valued than friends and friendship. Augustine was an innovative thinker and friendship represents a good example of his flair for reconfiguring its framework into an ecclesial setting. He wrote: 'what greater consolation do we have in this human society, riddled with errors and anxieties, than the unfeigned faith and mutual love of true and good friends?'. Yet, as a Christian Bishop, how would he reconceive this well established and treasured institution? Friendship was certainly something that became recast within the light of his conversion and immersion into the life of the Church. In Augustine's exchange with the Donatists, we glimpse his most fully developed vision of friendship. Through his preaching on John's gospel, which comes to us as his In Iohannis Euangelium Tractatus, Augustine reveals this vision of what friendship is. Given that John's gospel gives such weight to the incarnation and to friendship, we can witness through his hermeneutical strategy of figuration, his notion that friendship with God comes in belonging to the totus Christus, 'the whole Christ'. For Augustine, the universal nature of the Church as Christ's body and bride enjoys a continued connection to the head (Christ) and through the Church, its members live within the embrace of the Spirit. With this foundation of friendship, Augustine cried out to those separated by schism: belong?be bound?be friends with God in Christ. ‎D'origine Thrace et esclave affranchi, Phèdre est le premier à avoir fait entrer le genre de la fable en langue latine. Son œuvre, ‘Les Fables ésopiques de Phèdre, affranchi d'Auguste’ (Phaedri Augusti Liberti Fabulae Æsopiae), est un recueil de cinq livres comportant cent-vingt trois fables vérifiées. Profondément inspirées par Esope (même si seulement 47 pièces lui seraient directement empruntées), ses fables mettent en scène des animaux, des personnages humains ou Phèdre lui-même. De sa vie, on ne connaît en effet que ce qu'il révèle au travers de ses fables. Entre 14 et 31, il se fait connaître par un premier livre de fables qui lui vaut probablement l'exil. En effet, sous couvert d'apologues, son œuvre renferme parfois nombre d'allusions politiques sur la cour de l'Empire Romain. Phèdre ne sera jamais reconnu par ses contemporains. Il tombe dans l'oubli, pour être abondamment pillé par les fabulistes du Moyen Âge, et n'en ressortir qu'à la Renaissance, avec la découverte d'un manuscrit ancien. — Prêtre érudit, historien et archiviste, Emmanuel Debrie (1865-1941), nommé curé d’Ahuy en 1900, s’adonna aux recherches historiques : abonné à diverses revues, fréquentant les bouquinistes, il déchiffrait, copiait, annotait sans trêve. Il a peu publié : cet ouvrage, Phaedri Augusti Liberti Fabulae Aesopiae (1897 ; 10e éd. en 1938), étude de la langue latine et une trentaine d'articles ; il a surtout, accumulé une énorme documentation, aujourd’hui conservée à la Bibliothèque municipale de Dijon : 67 volumes, registres, cahiers, liasses, fiches, etc., dictionnaires toponymiques de la Côte-d’Or, notes généalogiques, propres du diocèse de Dijon, fichiers du clergé côte-d‘orien, histoire d’Ahuy, mélanges littéraires... instruments de travail pour tous les chercheurs et les curieux. Désormais les frais d'envoi sont de 6 € seulement pour les livres jusqu'à 1 kg (colissimo suivi), pour la France métropolitaine.‎
