French, U.S. District Attorney for Massachusetts, 1906-1914. Leather bookplates of Howard Lehman Goodhart and Phyllis Goodhart Gordon. John Baskerville (1706-1775) was the greatest printer of his era. Born in Wolverley, Hereford - Worcester, England, he became a writing master in Birmingham. He also carried on a successful japanning (varnishing) business there. In about 1750 he began to make experiments in letter founding, and produced the wonderful series of types now named after him. His first book, the Virgil of 1757, was also the first to be printed upon wove paper (manufactured by a process that he invented). In 1758 he be came printer to Cambridge University. All of his books bear show fine craftsmanship and a refined sense of design. In the last few years before his death, Baskerville published a few Latin classics in quarto and duodecimo. "All these bear the marks of unabated genius even in his declining days: and suffice, had he printed nothing else, to distinguish him as the first typographer of his time" - T. B. Reed, in 'Old English Letter Foundries' Gaskell 51; Brunet V:87; Grasse VI:242. Some age stain on the title page, but otherwise an attractive copy of a Baskerville classic. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! ‎C. C. SALLUSTII OPERA OMNIA. Bound with / C. C. SALLUSTIO VOLGARIZZATO.‎

‎pp. 236; 149 + Engraved frontis portrait. Two volumes in one. Large paper copy, printed on "Carta dei Classici" paper. Slightly foxed. Tall folio. [460 x 315 mm.] Bound in original vellum backed cloth boards. Sallust was a famed Roman historian and politician. He was tribune of the people (52 B.C.) and praetor (46). He was ejected (50) from the senate ostensibly for adultery, but more probably because of his partisanship for Caesar. He served with Caesar after his praetorship and was his governor in Numidia; he was subsequently accused of misusing his governorship for personal gain. His princi pal works are the Bellum Catilinae, on the conspiracy of Catiline and his account of the Jugurthine War, Bellum Jugurthinum. His history of Rome is extant only in fragments; it probably covered the pe riod 78 B.C. to 67 B.C. As a historian Sallust was important as one of the first to write historical monographs dealing with sharply limited events and periods. Although his style is consciously archa ic, it is distinguished by its terseness and directness. His character sketches are particularly impressive and vivid, and his work has found as many imitators as critics - Columbia Encyclopedia. In t his edition, the Latin text is followed by an Italian translation by Vittorio Alfieri da Asti. This beautifully printed Bodoni-like production is extremely scarce. We have been able to locate only three copies in the U.S. Brunet V:88. RARE. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W143‎

‎CAII SALLUSTII CRISPI QUAE EXSTANT OPERA.‎

‎pp. 48, 392, (1) + Three plates engraved by Charles Nicolas Cochin (1715-1790) + Engraved headpiece. Woodcut printer's device. Small 8vo. [146 x 85 mm.] All edges gold gilt. Wide margins. Fine contemporary full French olive morocco gilt binding. Silk doublures. Manuscript Crozat (1813) ownership. Leather gold Ex Libris of Dudley C. Majoribanks. Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks, 1st Baron Tweedmouth, also known as the Laird of Guisachan and Glenaffric (18201894), was a Scottish businessman and a Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1853 until 1880, when he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Tweedmouth. Beautifully printed and handsomely bound edition that appears to be essentially the sheets of the 1744 edition with a new title page. Includes a life of Sallust by Etienne Andre Philippe de Pretot (d. 1787). A brief history of the Barbou Classics is given by Schweiger (II 1269). In 1742 Lenglet de Fresnoy persuaded Coustelier to start a series which was meant to be a French rival to the Elzeviers - even surpassing them in terms of scholarship and typography. Though this effort soon exhausted itself, it was revived by Jean Joseph Barbou in 1753. Seven of these attractive little books appeared in 1753-1755, and though there were more issued in the next decade, there was not enough market interest to support a sustained publishing program. They still stand as a monument to French scholarship and typography. Brunet V:87. Very scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! SMALL BOX 3‎

‎SALLUST‎

‎Spine slant. Former owner's name on ffep and inner cover. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (Robert Brown). Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). Some pencilling. Some chipping to cloth. Titlepage creased. ; Loeb Classical Library No. 116; 560 pages; Sallust, Gaius Sallustius Crispus (86– 34 BCE) of Amiternum, after a wild youth became a supporter of Julius Caesar. He was tribune in 53; expelled from the Senate in 50; was quaestor in 49, praetor in 46. He saw Caesar triumph in Africa and became governor of Numidia, which he oppressed. Later in Rome he laid out famous gardens, retired from public life, and wrote a monograph on Catiline's conspiracy and one on the war with Jugurtha (both extant) , and a history of Rome 78–67 BCE (little survives). Though biased, Sallust's extant work is valuable. It shows lively characterisation (in speeches after Thucydides' manner) and attempts to explain the meaning of events. The work on Catiline has been called a study in social pathology. Sallust's style anticipates that of the early Empire.‎

‎SALLUST: ROME AND JUGURTHA Edited with Introduction, Notes & Vocabulary‎

‎Scholar's blindstamp and name to ffep (Robert Brown). Pencilling to a few pages. Small sticker stain to front wrap. Minor wear and light browning to wraps. ; This selection of passages from Sallust's Bellum Iugurthinum, reissued now after many years out of print, consists of the following chapters: V-VI, XII-XIII, XV-XVI, XX-XXVI, XXVII-XXXI, XXXIX-XLI, XLIII-LV, LXIII-LXIV, LXXIII, LXXX-XCII.4, XCV-CII.4, CXI-CXIV. These are arranged in three main narrative sections: the Numidian Civil War and the appeal to Rome; limited intervention; and outright war. There is a substantial introduction on both Africa and Rome, giving the history and context of the war. Linking passages fill in between the selected passages of the Latin text. Finally, there are detailed notes on the text and a vocabulary. ; 148 pages‎

‎Foxing to top of textblock and top edge of DJ flaps. Else minor shelfwear. ; Sallust (86-35 BC) was a historian of major importance, writing at the time of the late Roman Republic. This is the first full-length commentary and English translation of one of his major works, the Histories, covering the years 78-67 BC--one of the most poorly documented periods of the era. ‎SALLUST: THE HISTORIES. VOLUME II: Books iii-iv. Translated with Introduction and Commentary‎

‎Foxing to top of textblock and top edge of DJ flaps. Else minor shelfwear. ; The period covered by Sallust's Histories--78-67 BC--forms part of one of the least well documented eras of the late Republic. For nearly a century scholars have consulted the edition of B. Maurenbrecher (1891-93). Continuing research on the period has produced material with a bearing on the interpretation of Sallust's text; in addition, several fragments not known to Maurenbrecher have subsequently been discovered. For this new translation, McGushin has freshly revised Maurenbrecher's placement and ordering of the fragments, and incorporated this newly discovered material. Together with a comprehensive introduction, he provides a detailed interpretation in the first full-length commentary on the work. ; Clarendon Ancient History Series; Vol. 2; 259 pages‎
