VITRUVIUS: ON ARCHITECTURE VOL. I
Light shelfwear to book. Long tear to rear panel of DJ (4 cm). Some rubbing to DJ. ; Vitruvius (Marcus V. Pollio) , Roman architect and engineer, studied Greek philosophy and science and gained experience in the course of professional work. He was one of those appointed to be overseers of imperial artillery or military engines, and was architect of at least one unit of buildings for Augustus in the reconstruction of Rome. Late in life and in ill health he completed, sometime before 27 BCE, De Architectura which, after its rediscovery in the fifteenth century, was influential enough to be studied by architects from the early Renaissance to recent times. ; Loeb Classical Library No. 251; Vol. 1; 322 pages

Volk, Katharina & Gareth D. Williams (Eds. )
SEEING SENECA WHOLE Perspectives on Philosophy, Poetry and Politics
Gift inscription from Volk to R. E. Fantham in pencil to titlepage. Pencil marginalia to a few pages. Creasing along upper edge of DJ. DJ spine a bit sunned. '2006' written in pen to front panel of DJ. ; Columbia Studies in the Classical Tradition; 222 pages; This volume contains ten essays by an international group of scholars on various aspects of the work of L. Annaeus Seneca the Younger, the famous (some would say, notorious) Roman playwright, philosopher, and politician of the Claudian and Neronian periods. Approaching Seneca from a number of different angles, the authors endeavor both to illuminate individual aspects of the writer's enormous output and to discern common themes among the many different genres practiced by Seneca. Given its interdisciplinary approach, the collection is of interest to classicists, historians, and historians of philosophy alike.

VERGIL'S ECLOGUES
Gift inscription from editor to R. E. Fantham on titlepage. Light wear to corners of wraps. Small scratch to front wrap. ; This volume, together with its companion on the Georgics and the previously published volume on the Aeneid, completes the coverage of Vergil's poetry in Oxford Readings in Classical Studies. It collects ten classic papers on the Eclogues written between 1970 and 1999 by leading scholars from several different countries. The contributions are representative of recent developments in Vergilian scholarship, with some discussing general issues raised by the work and others treating important individual poems and passages. The editor's Introduction places the essays in their context. A conspectus of contemporary Eclogues criticism, the book will be helpful to students who are encountering the poems for the first time - all Latin has been translated - and will also serve as a reference work for more seasoned scholars. ; Oxford Readings in Classical Studies; 293 pages; Signed by Editor

Realm of the Incas Revised Edition

4.25" x 7". Book in very good condition. Clean text 223 pages slightly aged. Small corner bent on back cover. History of the Inca Empire by a racist bigoted ill-informed creep. The historical data is interesting and most likely accurate. But the opinions and value judgements begin to be annoying. von Hagen claims for example that llamas are "oily" which is completely untrue. There is not one drop of oil on the wool of either of our llamas. Their skin tends to be dry. That is why llama wool does not smell bad when it gets wet. And von Hagen's opinions and value judgements about the lifestyles of the ancient peoples and comparisons to modern reprobative types is almost offensive. The historical data has some value. It is well researched and the bibliography and references are invaluable for the researcher. Our book number 29067.
Mentor: Ancient Civilizations, Published by THE NEW AMERICAN LIBRARY paperback
