Très bon état - texte bilingue - PUBLII VIRGILII MARONIS AENEIS. 4 TOMUS - Nouvelle édition, revue et corrgée, avec les variantes, augmentée d'une dédicace en vers a S.M. l'empeur de russie - EX LIBRIS DE CHANAY - demi-cuir titre en bordeau, tomaison en vert un peu frottée. texte en très bon état - une gravure par volume en frontispice par Moreau - Avec des remarques sur les principales beautés du texte, par Delille, pour les 4 premiers livres, et par Michaud pour les derniers. L'abbé Jacques Delille (1738-1813) fut poète et professeur. Versificateur correct, mais absolument impersonnel, il représente la poésie telle qu'on la concevait couramment sous sa forme la plus accomplie, entre 1780 et 1810. Dès 1802, d'ailleurs, il se trouva en butte aux attaques de poètes comme M.-J. Chénier, déjà sensible à ce qu'avait de désuet cette poésie.

A Series of Nine Albumen Views of Costa Rica c. 1895
Costa Rica 1890. Albumen photographs 9 x 7 ½ inches on larger mounts with credits to Rudd y Paynter and the Paynter Bros. Near Fine. H.N. Rudd and the Paynter Brothers Richard and John were photographers who were active in Costa Rica in the 1890s operating out of San Jose. Five of these views show the Rudd y Paynter mark on versos with their address at the Parque Central in San Jose. The Paynters were from the United States arriving in 1874 and first establishing Rudd y Paynter out of a shop in the Parque Central where they also sold marble and art objects. In 1895 the studio changed its name to Paynter Bros. <br /> <br /> Collected here are nine scarce albumen views of Costa Rica from the 1890s. Five of them document a trip up Mt. Turrialba these bear the Rudd y Paynter mark. Of the other other four one image shows a building likely in San Jose with a gathered crowd; one shows a very striking mural and is captured “Corpus Christi / Cartaga Costa Rica June 4 / 96 this shows no photographers mars though the size and format are identical to the others and we presume the photographers to be the Paynter brothers; One shows industrial coffee machinery on “El Canada†the last shows a group of people in front of the bridge over the Rio Grande with a platform showing the markings of the Hamlin Car and Wheel Company of Catwissa PA. The group with the exception of the Corpus Christi image are mounted on uniform heavy cardstock mounts with gilt edges and remain in particularly fine condition with excellent contrast and some light wear to mounts. Overall a scarce group documenting Costa Rica at a time when few photographers operated. unknown

Washington: GPO 1957. Offset-printed broadside in three colors 21-1/2" x 17"; printed recto-only. Old folds probably as issued; a few small nicks to extremities; Very Good or better. Announces the establishment of Pan American Week April 8-14; and Pan American Day April 14 and reprints the full text of Eisenhower's proclamation. Pan-American Day is still celebrated in some Latin American countries though news of its establishment never seems to have made a lasting impression on the U.S. populace. Though clearly intended for display this broadside is apparently scarce with no example recorded in commerce and none catalogued in OCLC as of October 2018. unknown

Guatemala City 1872. Broadside measuring 17 ¼ x 13 ½ inches. Vertical fold to center some loss and foxing to left upper portion very good plus overall. An unrecorded broadside announcing the first celebration of the Día del Ejército de Guatemala a holiday celebrating the defeat of the dictator Vicente Perna. This broadside also mentions the success of the campaign in Honduras as a reason for the celebration. The text gives an extensive description of the day’s festivities with celebrations including the military band and a puppet theater for children. The rules for the evening include no selling of alcoholic beverages and no one entering the plaza on horseback. The holiday still exists today and became a center of controversy following the Guatemalan Civil War. unknown

An uncommon first edition copy of Manuel Gomez Miralles’ photographic survey of Costa Rica. Miralles was one of Costa Rica’s most prolific photographers operating for many decades and this book is an early collection of his work. Miralles work is compositionally advanced and his large format images are reproduced effectively in the volume. This book was the only survey of Miralles’ work to appear in his lifetime and after his death his negatives were sold to a foreign photographer. We find no records of this book in the trade or auction records at the time of this listing. unknown

He received Paraguay's National Prize for Literature in 1999 for his collection Romancero. Tierra adentro. He is recognized along with Elvio Romero Josefina Plá Hérib Campos Cervera and Augusto Roa Bastos as voices who shaped Paraguayan poetry and narrative through innovation in the middle of the 20th century. . His work was nearly all produced with a social focus as was the film advertised here the 1956 short drama "Ignacio" in which the citizens of a rural village confront their political leaders to clean up their water supply. unknown

Washington DC: El Coordinador de Asuntos Interamericanos 1942. Very good. Pictorial lithograph 20 x 14.25 inches printed in red gray yellow and black. Minor surface wear mild creasing light dust-soiling a few pinholes. A rare poster issued by the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs CIAA during World War II attempting to sway public opinion in Latin America to the Allied side. The CIAA was established by executive order in July 1941 in order to distribute news advertising film reels and more to and from Latin America to counter Italian and German propaganda campaigns in the region. The text of the present poster translates from the Spanish as "Freedom of Speech. One of the four freedoms for which the Allies are fighting." The central image features an open-mouthed face breaking open a large swastika which is itself on fire. A mildly subtle message that free speech destroys fascism. The poster was designed by noted Russian-American graphic designer and photographer Alexey Brodovitch whose printed credit appears at top right; Brodovitch is most well-known for his art direction of Harper's Bazaar from 1934 to 1958. A powerful visual display with only one copy reported in OCLC at MOMA though we also find two other institutional holdings at the United States Holocaust Museum and the Hoover Institute. Mild bumps to board corners a bit of rippling to cloth on spine still Near Fine a slightly faded but still Near Fine dustwrapper. <br /> <br /> A terrific association copy inscribed by Miguel Mármol to American communist and civil rights activist Kendra Alexander. Mármol 1905-1993 founding father of the Salvadoran Communist Party in 1930 and a leading figure of the Salvadoran worker-revolutionary movement for over five decades told his story over the course of several weeks in 1966 to the Salvadoran communist poet Roque Dalton. In his introduction Dalton who was assassinated in 1973 describes the experience as "one of the greatest satisfactions of my life" and the result was indeed one of the most popular and important works of Latin American revolutionary literature of the decade - Mármol's tumultuous life most of it spent in exile came both to exemplify and inspire the revolutionary movement in El Salvador and Central America.<br /> <br /> Though Miguel Mármol was first published in 1972 and went into numerous subsequent printings in Cuba and the Soviet Union there was no English-language translation until this 1987 edition from the small Latin-American publisher Curbstone. The cloth issue is hard to find and inscribed copies are rare; this a compelling association copy inscribed to the American civil rights leader and Communist Party leader Kendra Alexander 1945-1993 perhaps best-remembered as a close associate of Angela Davis whose Defense Committee she co-chaired during Davis's 1971 conspiracy trial. 59799. A striking pair of early carte-de-visite portraits of Peruvian women from the Courret studios at 197 Calle de la Union one bearing the Courret Hermanos imprint and the other with just Eugenio Courret’s credit from the same studio. Eugenio formed the Courret Hermanos firm in 1863 with his brother Aquiles. The portrait of the woman and child is particularly uncommon for the Courret catalog as most of the photographs they took were of single wealth patrons. unknown

The exhibition featured 41 works including oil paintings watercolor and drawings. The poster designed by Puerto Rican artist Carlos Rivera 1923-1999 features a powerful central image of a winged man holding aloft a staff which is both his paintbrush and his machete. Attractive poster designed by Cuban artist Rafael Enríquez Vega b.1947 calling for an international day of solidarity with the people of Cuba.
