‎THEATROKRATIA Collected Papers on the Politics and Staging of Greco-Roman Tragedy‎

‎Gift inscription to W. J. Slater from Calder III to ffep. Very minor shelfwear. A couple of corrections in pen done in author's hand to 2 pages. ; The volume gathers for the first time thirty-five scattered articles by Calder published 1958-1998 concerned with the political content of selected tragedies and their staging from Thespis to Seneca. An historian seeks to see tragedies in context, whether Pericles’ Athens or Nero’s Rome. He regularly contests the opinio communis. Eumenides protests against Periclean reform. Zeus in Prometheus is the tyrant Demos. Kreon not Antigone is the hero of Antigone. Neoptolemos in Philoctetes is a clever deceiver from the start. Sophocles Oinomaos was the inspiration of the East Pediment at Olympia. Atreus in Seneca’s Thyestes is the model whom Nero is urged to follow. The usual size of the Senecan chorus was three, never fifteen. Thespis’ chorus was six. A careful index locorum antiquorum ends the volume and makes the material easily accessible. ; Spudasmata Band 104; 431 pages; Signed by Author‎

‎SUETONIUS The Scholar and His Caesars‎

‎Ex-library copy with usual stamps and traces of removed pocket (to ffep). No call numbers to spine. ; Seutonius, a Roman historian, was the author of "The Lives of the Caesars". This biography sets the historian's career and his method of dealing with his subject matter in the context of Roman society in the early Empire, and draws a picture of the coherence of Suetonius's life, appointments, scholarship and literary activities. Seutonius is presented as a man of learning, rather than as a failed narrative historian. This portrait takes account of evidence concerning his life and seeks to clarify the character of "The Lives of the Caesars" as a description of emperors and Roman imperial society by a scholarly biographer who himself was in the service of a scholarly Caesar; Classical Life and Letters; 216 pages‎

Jahrhunderts abgefasst. Die Entstehungsgeschichte des umfangreichen Werkes ist ebenso unklar wie die Überlieferung. Auch die Universitätsbibliothek Innsbruck besitzt neun Handschriften. ‎HORACE'S SATIRES AND EPISTLES‎

‎Light shelfwear. Sticker residue to back wrap. ; 128 pages; Early in his life, and again in maturity, Horace sought to turn his poetic skills to the uses of moral and aesthetic discussion in the series of didactic works translated here. In the Satires, Horace adopts one persona after another, each of which reduces himself to absurdity in the process of trying to argue a point of view about the ethical or artistic life. The form of the Epistles permits Horace to write with particular intimacy, addressing moral issues in a persuasive yet informal way. The third epistle, The Art of Poetry, on the other hand, is a formal poem addressed to the emperor Augustus, and seeks to educate the poetic taste of the ruler of the western world.‎

‎ROMAN THEATER AND SOCIETY E. Togo Salmon Papers I‎

‎A couple of corners are lightly bumped. Former owner's bookplate to ffep (name has been deleted). Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing with chipping to one corner. ; Roman Theater & Society; 9.75 x 0.75 x 6.5 Inches; 200 pages; William Slater's new volume Roman Theater and Society brings an important perspective to the much-maligned status of the Roman theater, which has only recently been reappraised and appreciated as uniquely Roman rather than criticized for not being Greek. From this point of embarkation, William Slater and the nine contributors discuss theater in Rome and the Greek east with a definition of performance incorporating not only stage performances but also dinnertime entertainment, sporting events, and political events. Contributors are T. D. Barnes, K. M. Coleman, J. C. Edmonson, E. R. Gebhard, J. R. Green, E. J. Jory, W. D. Lebek, and D. S. Potter. Individual chapters combine literary evidence with archaeological, thereby engendering a deeper appreciation for the social and political roles of Roman theater. It becomes clear that these roles were of great influence in giving voice to the popular demands of the average Roman. In examining the roles of theater the contributors turn to the players and audience themselves for deeper understanding.‎
