Nel libro sfilano le immagini di lui bambino nella comunità ebraica di Saluzzo, e poi quelle, drammatiche, recluso sotto falso nome in un collegio di Salesiani per sfuggire alla deportazione. E poi ancora i viaggi e la passione per il canottaggio. E il servizio militare a Orvieto, dove Segre scopre la babele linguistica dei dialetti italiani. Ma il libro è anche una galleria di ritratti di grandi personaggi della cultura: Santorre Debenedetti, Benvenuto e Lore Terracini, Gianfranco Contini, Roman Jakobson...
