The collection of 16 papers looks at themes such as the modes of interaction between polis and ruling powers, the construction of ethnic and social identity, interstate and civil conflict and its resolution, social economics, institutional processes and privileges, polis representations, ethics, and, not least, religious phenomena. The contributions range from "hard epigraphy" to sophisticated conceptual studies of aspects of the postclassical polis, and approach the inscriptions both as textual objects and as artefacts. The aim of this volume is to identify the postclassical polis both as a reality and as a constructed concept, not only a monolithic block, but a result of tension in the exercise of different kinds of powers. Da quattro anni è stata comunicata la datazione alla termoluminescenza della navicella di Teti, nuragica e con dodici segni alfabetici (tra i quali il pugnaletto "sardo" a elsa gammata) incisi tra IX e VIII secolo a.C. Per illuminarne l'importanza, l'autore, semplice cultore della materia, ha avvertito necessario proporre questo saggio, preoccupandosi di presentarlo ai lettori con l'avallo di una voce dell'archeologia (grazie alla dottoressa Caterina Bittichesu). Sono ricapitolati gli elementi in favore di un uso della scrittura in Sardegna sin dal nuragico e le resistenze alla considerazione dei reperti proposti, quando estendere le indagini scientifiche potrebbe portare a titoli senza punti interrogativi. Si guarda soprattutto ai reperti con scrittura alfabetica, limitandosi a considerarla indecifrata come altre coeve nel Mediterraneo (alle quali sembra ormai comparabile anche per l'estensione del corpus). ‎Summary This book explores the transmission of the letters of Leo the Great (pope, 440-461). After setting out the contours of Leo's papacy and the factors contributing to the sending and subsequent transmission of his letters to posterity, it deals in detail with around sixty collections of Leo's letters and over 300 manuscripts ranging in date from the sixth up to the sixteenth century. Each period of the Middle Ages is introduced as the context for collecting and copying the letters, and the relationships between the letter collections themselves are traced. ‎Summary The Physiologus is the ancestor of the bestiary, a collection of chapters describing animal qualities and behaviours, usually with an allegorical meaning, which proliferated especially in England in the late Middle Ages. While much scholarly attention has been directed to the bestiary, the history of the transmission of the Physiologus has hardly been investigated. Evidence of the circulation of this treatise in the early medieval period is certainly scanty, since only two brief versions dating from this period have been preserved, one in Old English and another one in Latin. However, this monograph shows further proof of the knowledge of the Physiologus in Anglo-Saxon England. It also reveals the relationship of the only two surviving texts and their connection to the main Continental recension of the time. This study therefore demonstrates that the popularity of bestiaries in the later Middle Ages was largely due to the prominence that its predecessor, the Physiologus, enjoyed in the preceding period.
