‎Les bestiaires medievaux, recueils de notices breves consacrees a des animaux et assorties de lecons theologiques ou morales, sont fondamentaux pour la connaissance de la symbolique animaliere au Moyen Age. A l'occasion du XVe Colloque de la Societe Internationale Renardienne (aout 2003, Universite catholique de Louvain), le theme des bestiaires a ete privilegie, et ce volume apporte une selection de douze contributions. Il y est question du Physiologus alexandrin et de ses succedanes dans le monde byzantin et latin du haut Moyen Age (Stavros LAZARIS, Strasbourg; Jacqueline LECLERCQ-MARX, Bruxelles), du De bestiis et alliis rebus faussement attribue a Hugues de Saint-Victor (Willene B. CLARK, Marlboro College), de l'Aviarium d'Hugues de Fouilloy et de ses illustrations (Remy CORDONNIER, Lille). Pour les textes en langue vulgaire sont examines le bestiaire de Pierre de Beauvais (Craig Baker, Quebec ; Baudouin VAN DEN ABEELE, Louvain-la-Neuve) et le bestiaire espagnol, atypique et virtuellement ignore, realise vers 1570 pour don Juan d'Autriche (Jose Manuel FRADEJAS RUEDA, Valladolid). Xenia MURATOVA analyse un manuscrit inconnu du Bestiaire d'Amours de Richard de Fournival, qui s'avere etre le plus ancien temoin conserve de ce texte. Paul WACKERS (Utrecht) presente un premier panorama de la tradition des bestiaires en moyen neerlandais, et Dora FARACI (L'Aquila) plaide pour une plus grande prise en consideration des bestiaires en ancien allemand, anglais et islandais. Le propos s'ouvre a quelques traditions textuelles voisines : le Livre du Tresor encyclopedique de Brunet latin (Francesco CAPACCIONI, Perugia), et les textes medicaux. Il s'agit ici des maladies designees anciennement par des noms d'animaux (Karine VAN 'T LAND, Nijmegen), et de la place des animaux dans certaines compilations de pharmacopee medievale (Iolanda VENTURA, Munster). Autant de perspectives insoupconnees sur les riches connexions culturelles qu'evoquent les bestiaires medievaux. Le volume offre egalement une bibliographie cumulative sur les bestiaires, couvrant les titres parus durant les quinze dernieres annees, et il est pourvu d'une abondante iconographie (60 reproductions de miniatures et de pages manuscrites).‎

‎Summary Scribes played complex, often overlooked roles in the production of hand-written texts across Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance. Some scribes simply copied the exemplar; other scribes participated with authors and decorators in establishing the mise-en-page and overall appearance of a text. Many decisions needed to be made regarding the selection of text script; the style of rubrication, display scripts, and initials; the placement and execution of potentially elaborate illuminated images. What was the role of the scribe in contributing to the decision-making process or in determining the final format and material appearance of a document, scroll or codex? This volume explores many of the choices that a single scribe or groups of scribes would need to make when writing and presenting a text, whether in a monastic, cathedral or lay setting.
