‎Summary Tales of treachery and friendship, adultery and murder, rape and revenge, as well as prophecy, repentance, forgiveness and thanksgiving ? such is the stuff of the Anglo-Norman Bible's Books of Samuel. They recount the life of the last of Israel's judges but include some of the world's best-known characters ? Saul, David and Jonathan, Goliath, Bathsheba, and Absalom. The first book traces the life of Samuel, and the initial success of King Saul, chosen to satisfy the Israelites' demand for a king. After Saul loses God's favour, David enters his court to console him, but Saul envies David's success. When Saul dies in battle, David succeeds him. In book two, David consolidates control over his kingdom, but his adultery with Bathsheba precipitates the reverses of the final chapters. Historically, the Books of Samuel trace the creation of Israel's monarchy and explain its ultimate failure. Religiously, they relate Israel's continuing relationship with God and the establishment of Jerusalem as the religious and political capital of the new kingdom. Two mid-fourteenth-century manuscripts preserve the text of the Anglo-Norman Bible's Samuel. The base manuscript (L), British Library Royal 1 C III, notable for its inclusion of multi-lingual glosses, was acquired by Henry VIII from the Benedictine Abbey of Reading in 1530. The lavishly illustrated Paris, Biblioth que nationale de France, MS fran ais 1 (P), produced in England for the baronial de Welles family, later belonged to King Louis XII of France. Brent A. Pitts has prepared the critical edition and Maureen Boulton's introduction and notes elucidate the text and its interpretation by medieval commentators. ‎4to., with diagrams in the text; original boards, covers lightly age-marked else a good, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter lightly frayed and creased at edges. Buhler's classic study was first published in the German language in 1898; the first English translation (prepared by Fleet) appeared in 1904 as an appendix in 'Indian Antiquary'. There the situation rested for over fifty years until the work was reissued in 'Indian Studies' in 1959, when for the first time the separately printed portfolio of plates and transliteration tables appeared with English captions. This edition was rapidly exhausted and thus the present reissue was produced. This reissue provides a verbatim reproduction of the 1959 edition, together with Max-Muller's Obituary Note on Buhler originally published in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1898, and Fleet's Introductory Notes to the text as published in 1904 Sadly the rare separate portfolio is not present with this copy, which is quite sufficiently elusive in its own right.‎

‎Ce catalogue a ete entrepris en remplacement de celui, notoirement defectueux, etabli en 1849, par G. Libri, qui se resumait a 40 pages, pour 1000 pages et un CDRom dans ce nouveau volume. 220 manuscrits medievaux et 420 modernes sont decrits, 210 medievaux et 285 modernes conserves a la Bibliotheque municipale, 10 medievaux et 135 modernes a la Societe Eduenne. C?est un travail collectif et pluridisciplinaire, une vingtaine de medievistes sont intervenus, chacun dans leur domaine particulier, pour un nombre variables de contributions : A.Bondeelle, I. Delaunay, A. Dufour, J. Dufour, G.Giordanengo, D. Jacquart, M.d'Harcourt, H. Loyau, Z.Kaluza, G. Lanoe, Cl. Maitre, A. Minvielle, E.Palazzo, A. Rebourg (?),Fr.Richard, P. Stirnemann, L.Torchet, V. Von Buren, Y. Zaluska, sous la direction de Claire Maitre. Ce fonds de manuscrits est remarquable par son antiquite et sa stabilite, parmi les manuscrits medievaux, 35 sont anterieurs a l?an mille, ce qui est considerable, et temoigne de la vitalite d?AUTUN durant le haut moyen age. Pendant le deuxieme millenaire, l?importance politique de la ville diminue, mais elle beneficie d?une grande stabilite, grace en partie a la perennite d?un chapitre cathedral qui, installe probablement au IXe siecle, existe toujours au XXIe. Meme a l?epoque revolutionnaire, les manuscrits du chapitre resteront paisiblement a la cathedrale, ils bougeront seulement de quelques centaines de metres au XIXe siecle pour passer au Seminaire, et encore au debut du XXe siecle, pour s?installer a la Bibliotheque municipale. Ce programme d?etude sur les manuscrits d?Autun a deja donne lieu a deux publications : un petit livre illustre qui, a propos de ce fonds, a tente d?expliquer quelques caracteres propres aux manuscrits : Regards sur les manuscrits d?Autun, Autun, 1995, ecrit par six des collaborateurs du Catalogue scientifique, et : J.-L. ‎This publication of the thirteenth-century Northumberland Bestiary, formerly the Alnwick Bestiary, provides a complete critical edition of one of the most developed Medieval Latin bestiaries. Even among the few manuscripts in its group, called the ?transitional? family of bestiaries, the Northumberland Bestiary is unique: it crystallizes the fluid combination of narrative, animal lore, and spiritual guidance that characterize the genre. Beginning with creation and covering the gamut of real and imaginary beasts, birds, fish, serpents, worms, man, and trees, this bestiary is a spiritual journey as well as a ?scientific? manual. Under the pretense of zoology, the bestiary is a metaphor for divine creation, a message from the creator through creation. Medieval preachers used the pretense as well as the spiritual allegories that accompany the creatures to instruct their congregations. The Northumberland Bestiary was the last known bestiary in private hands until 2007 when the J. Paul Getty Museum acquired it. Written about 1250, in a small, early gothic book hand, it is one of the richest of all Latin bestiary manuscripts produced in England. There are 112 finely drawn and colored miniatures among its 74 leaves as well as an elegant and discrete ?Sermon on How a Sinner May Be Pleasing to God" (Sermo qualiter peccator Deo placere valeat), which was likely directed to clerics who were training to work as pastors. For a general as well as a scholarly readership, this edition captures the charming essence of the bestiary tradition in a readable Latin-English format. The book comprises a general introduction discussing the text and the manuscript, the Latin text with English translation, notes and commentary, a description of all the miniatures, and reproductions of about thirty of them.‎
