Tuttavia non solo le testimonianze sono scarse, ma anche gli studi hanno trascurato questo interessantissimo campo. Il volume studia le modalit con cui le donne in Italia hanno preso parte al vivissimo dibattito rinascimentale sull'interpretazione e la conoscenza delle Sacre Scritture, da cui hanno anche attinto per sviluppare originali interventi. Sulla base delle riscritture bibliche che ci hanno lasciato, sono individuabili vere e proprie comunit ermeneutiche femminili. Venezia, Firenze, il Centro Italia sono le coordinate geografiche dei circoli qui individuati. A Firenze le scrittrici che lavorano con e sulla Bibbia prediligono il rapporto con la comunit politica, suggerendo modelli comportamentali che possono istruire le donne per il loro inserimento nella societ civile. A Venezia la Bibbia ispira argomenti a difesa della dignit femminile e della parit dei generi, infatti sull'episodio edenico sono state fondate coraggiose letture che incisero significativamente nella cosiddetta querelle des femmes europea. Nell'Italia centrale l'interesse femminile si focalizza su una dimensione pi devozionale e spirituale, sul problema della salvezza per il beneficio di Cristo, sulla versificazione e sul commento dei Salmi. Con questo studio si intende portare in giusta luce il contributo delle donne italiane al dibattito culturale e religioso nell'et delle Riforme e mostrare la modernit e vivacit delle loro posizioni oltre che recuperarne il valore letterario e intellettuale. Il testo sacro, che era gi molto noto in forma manoscritta, si cos diffuso ampiamente pure tra i laici, anche attraverso riscritture devozionali, erudite e letterarie. Spesso lo accompagnavano immagini, che erano gi interpretazioni, o veniva adattato per essere usato nella liturgia, per l'istruzione dei fanciulli, per la preghiera o l'orientamento morale, per essere letto ad alta voce o in privato, per essere rappresentato. Anche quando i volgarizzamenti delle Sacre Scritture vennero proibiti dalla Chiesa Cattolica, i testi biblici continuarono a essere letti nelle forme consentite o clandestine, rielaborati in forme letterarie o devozionali di grande successo, che ebbero a volte molte edizioni e un largo mercato editoriale. La Bibbia entrata cos nelle case degli Italiani e veniva tenuta presente non solo per la piet , ma anche per le normative sociali, professionali e ovviamente etiche. La raccolta di saggi studia sotto tre prospettive (circolazione del testo, lettura e interpretazione, riscritture letterarie) il modo con cui in Italia il mondo laico ha fruito del libro sacro nella prima et moderna, dall'avvio della stampa a met del Seicento. Permette perci di conoscere come gli Italiani si sono rapportati con la Bibbia da una prospettiva non solo cattolica, illuminando sugli atteggiamenti che stanno alla radice del modo con cui oggi si relazionano con il testo sacro.
