‎E H Neville [ Eric Harold Neville ] (1889-1961), English mathematician, of Trinity College Cambridge and the University of Readi‎

‎Eric Harold Neville mathematician. Autograph Letter Signed 'E. H. Neville' to 'Sir Dundas' i.e. Sir Richard Dundas Harington‎

‎On letterhead of The Copse Sonning on Thames. 26 October 1944. See W. J. Langford's glowing obituary of Neville described as 'the greatest of them all' from a pedagogical point of view in the Mathematical Gazette May 1964. 2pp. 12mo. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. He begins by reassuring Harington that his books are 'safely here' but continues: 'I fear that every book I possess on numerical equations is on duty for the time being in the computing department of one of the RAF establishments.' He does not know of 'any book which gives an account of the processes actually used nowadays. The fundamental principle is always the same - a first approximation followed by some iterative process by which any desired order of accuracy can be reached. Theoretically the ideal process for finding a first approximation is Graeffe's root-squaring process but in practice each problem is apt to throw up a mass of equations for which some particular trick can be found.' He ends by comparing the process to 'elementary multiplication'. In a postscript he points Harington to a paper of his in the Mathematical Gazette which has 'the gist of the matter in it'. From the Harington family papers the recipient being Sir Richard Dundas Harington 13th Baronet 1900-1981. On letterhead of The Copse, Sonning on Thames. 26 October 1944. unknown‎

‎E J Sullivan [Edmund Joseph Sullivan] (1869-1933), English book illustrator:‎

‎E. J. Sullivan English book illustrator. Page of pencil sketches of girls dancing captioned 'The poppy' 'Sheperdess' and 'Mamma's sic little Alabama Coon'.‎

‎Without place or date. Circa 1894. 1p. 4to 22.5 x 18cm. On laid paper. In fair condition aged and with slight chipping. The sketches are crude but attractive headed with a line of three girls in black stockings and petticoats shaking a leg with the phrase 'The poppy' in the top left-hand corner and a line of girls at the foot with an oriental male figure with cane in the background captioned 'Mamma's Alabama Coon'. Two sketches of the 'Shepherdess' at bottom right with usual broad-brimmed hat and crook. Hattie Starr's 'Little Alabama Coon' took London by storm in 1894. A group of sketches for designs in the Pall Mall Budget with autograph text of an unpublished novel by Sullivan is offered separately. Without place or date. [Circa 1894?] unknown‎

‎E J Sullivan [Edmund Joseph Sullivan] (1869-1933), English book illustrator [H G Wells; The Pall Mall Budget, London]:‎

‎Six pencil sketches by E. J. Sullivan for illustrations in the Pall Mall Budget including ones to the H. G. Wells stories 'The Stolen Bacillus' and 'The Thumbnail'. With autograph notes by Sullivan for an apparently unpublished short story.‎

‎Undated five of the illustrations appearing in the Pall Mall Budget London in May and June 1894. The six illustrations and seven pages of text totalling 13pp. 4to 22.5 x 18cm on seven leaves of laid paper removed from an album. On aged brittle paper with chipping and slight loss to the edges. The illustrations are simple sketches indicating the layout of the page with titles and occasional words of text by Sullivan. Five of the six designs are for the Pall Mall Budget: 'The Thumbmark by H. G. Wells' 28 June 1894 thumbmarks around title and a newspaper seller with headline reading 'Anarchist Outrage'; 'The Stolen Bacillus by H. G. Wells' 21 June 1894 lady pursues thief running towards coach above sketch of gentleman in top hat and cloak sweeping his left hand; 'The Quest of the White Cat' 11 June 1894 by 'Miss <Orteroyd> page filled with designs showing three images of a fashionable lady in a cape; 'Love & Chronology' 1 May 1894 apparently including Pan with his pipes; 'To the Modern Heroine' 16 May 1894 a fashionable young lady leans over above the head of the title reading a book. The sixth illustration titled '<Ville Ciature>' and with the phrase 'I half-forgot how much you bore me' is untraced. It carries the most finished image showing a fashionable lady staring at a mirror on an elegant table in a wood-panelled room. The pages of text are heavily-corrected in Sullivan's tiny and elegant hand. They include a page headed 'The Author's Apology by way of preface.' Following the preface is the beginning of the first chapter: 'At last Lord Asterisk awoke. He was a man who seldom spoke of himself so he must be described.' Other character include 'Rose LeClerc' and 'Dr. May Bevan the clinical lecturer' and the other pages include text from chapters II and IV. The text is intriguing showing the influence of French symbolism and written in a style that would have been at home in 'The Yellow Book' which was beginning publication around the same time as Sullivan's designs appeared. The beginning of Chapter II gives a good indication of the style: 'He rang the bell & the servant came in. Have my robes come said he. Yes sir. I will try them on - said Lord Asterisk. They were brought - in the meantime his lordship had taken his tub; he dressed himself entirely in his robes of state. - with silk ermine coronet and all & went down stairs to dinner. We live half our live by not following out our impulses. I am going out said his lordship. What clothes shall I put you out your lordship How so Am I not fittingly dressed as becomes a lord Certainly sir - I am going out said his lordship - & I would have you fetch me a donkey in ten minutes while I smoke my cigarette Rudge was hard put to it - but he rang up 25 messengers & in ten minutes two donkeys had arrived simultaneously. Since there are two we will make four. .' Undated [five of the illustrations appearing in the Pall Mall Budget, London, in May and June 1894.] hardcover‎

‎E L'Estrange aka ?Emma Robinson (1814-1890), English novelist [Charles Manby]:‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed from 'E L'Estrange' to Charles Manby proposing to present a copy of the her three-decker novel 'Westminster Abbey' by Emma Robinson.‎

‎9 May 1854; no place. 12mo 4 pp. Bifolium. 51 lines. Text clear and complete. Good on aged paper. Chatty and spirited letter. 'I propose myself the honour and pleasure seldom indeed save in common parlance! of paying you a visit - to present you with a copy of "Westminster Abbey"' which has 'emerged from the press in the orthodox three volumes'. Does not want to give him 'an excuse for not flashing your eye through it'. Describes Manby as 'the "fastest man" living though in a sense entirely opposed I hope and trust! to the slang one!' 'You asked me once "What on earth could induce a rational being to write plays" - Let us see if you will dare to repeat the question putting novels for plays when you see me entering at the windows of your aerial apartment with a weird sister mounted on broomsticks from the top of Westminster Abbey!' L'Estrange's identity is unclear but the anonymous novel 'Westminster Abbey; or The Days of the Reformation' attributed to Emma Robinson was published by the London publisher John Mortimer in 1854. 9 May 1854; no place. unknown‎

‎Heliand. L'evangile de la Mer du Nord,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2008 Paperback, 488 pages., 14 x 21 cm.Languages : French. ISBN 9782503528663.‎

‎Vernacularity in England and Wales, c. 1300-1550.‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2011 Hardcover. VI 335 p., 11 b/w ill., 1 b/w tables, 156 x 234 mm, Languages: English, Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503528830.‎

‎Studies of the vernacular in the period 1300-1550 have tended to focus exclusively upon language, to the exception of the wider vernacular culture within which this was located. In a period when the status of English and ideas of Englishness were transforming in response to a variety of social, political, cultural and economic factors, the changing nature and perception of the vernacular deserves to be explored comprehensively and in detail. Vernacularity in England and Wales examines the vernacular in and across literature, art, and architecture to reach a more inclusive understanding of the nature of late medieval vernacularity. <br>The essays in this collection draw upon a wide range of source material, including buildings, devotional and educational literature, and parliamentary and civic records, in order to expand and elaborate our idea of the vernacular. Each contributor addresses central ideas about the nature and identity of the vernacular and how we appraise it, involving questions about nationhood, popularity, the commonalty, and the conflict and conjunction of the vernacular with the non-vernacular. These notions of vernacularity are situated within studies of reading practices, heresy, translation, gentry identity, seditious speech, and language politics. By considering the nature of vernacularity, these essays explore whether it is possible to perceive a common theory of vernacular use and practice at this time.‎
