GAY John 1685 1732
Poems on Several Occasions
London: Printed for J. and R. Tonson H. Woodfall W. Strahan R. Baldwin T. Caslon T. Longman and 4 others in London 1767. Fine-. In 2 volumes complete. 12mo; 4 260; 4 272pp with a copper-engraved frontispiece and 8 engraved plates after P. Fourdrinier. T 8vo. 7" X 4.5". Finely bound in slightly later full polished calf the elaborately gilt spine in six compartments with raised bands and green and red leather lettering pieces gilt; boards ruled in gilt; marbled end papers and silk page markers. Bindings lightly rubbed but internally clean and bright the illustrations remarkably fresh: A Fine set. Foxon G43 for earlier London editions. Lowndes 869. ESTC Citation No. T13905. In another age Gay would have stood out as a preeminent satiric writer but his close friendship with the two most penetrating and acerbic satirists ever to have written in English has meant that his gentler more amiable satiric achievement has usually been regarded as of a major but lower order. Lit. Encyclopedia Those satirists were of course Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope who met with Gay and three lesser lights John Arbuthnot Henry St. John and Thomas Parnell in the spring of 1714 as the Scriblerus Club. Gay designed Poems on Several Occasions to include his finest previously published works Rural Sports The Shepherd's Week and Trivia among other poems plus an extensive collection of new ones and published it by subscription in July 1720 to raise the funds to pay off his debts. It was reissued at approximately ten-year intervals with further editions in 1731 1737 1745 1757 and this last of 1767. Printed for J. and R. Tonson, H. Woodfall, W. Strahan, R. Baldwin, T. Caslon, T. Longman [and 4 others in London] unknown

Gay, John.
FABLES. By the Late Mr. John Gay. In Two Parts, Complete In One Volume.
167 p. Foxed. 165mm. Leather backed stipple decorated leather boards. Leather spine label misplaced. Loss on spine. John Gay (1685-1732) was an English poet and dramatist and member of the Scriblerus Club. In 1727 he wrote for six year old Prince William, later the Duke of Cumberland, Fifty-one Fables in Verse, for which he naturally hoped to gain some preferment, although he has much to say in them of the servility of courtiers and the vanity of court honours. He was offered the situation of gentleman-usher to the Princess Louisa, who was also still a child. He refused this offer, which all his friends seem to have regarded (without much apparent reason) an indignity. Scarce. An unusual and very scarce little edition. POETRY BX 2
