Eden Phillpotts (1862-1960), English novelist, strongly associated with Dartmoor, Devon, his daughter Mary Adelaide Eden Phillpo
Autograph Letter Signed from the novelist Eden Phillpotts to an unnamed woman discussing the handling of socialism in his 1926 play with his daughter Adelaide 'Yellow Sands' as well as his own political views sympathetic to Italian Fascism.
Torquay Devon. 4 May 1927. 2pp. 4to. 41 lines. In fair condition on aged paper. He begins by stating that 'Yellow Sands' 'only touches social questions by the accident of the plot. Socialism is a word the definition of which no two people appear to agree about. Ask a dozen Socialists what they understand by their faith & they will each tell you something different.' The opinions depicted in the play are both 'clear' and 'foggy' 'but it is in no sense propagandist - I hate propaganda in art.' He goes on to discuss his own views: 'I am not a socialist. Socialistic & communistic ideals will undoubtedly be exploited in this country when Labour returns to power & I apprehend no vital or rational advantages under that regime.' In a twenty-three line postscript he expounds a position sympathetic to Fascism beginning: 'The masses have always needed string to lead them. Take Italy & take England under the Commonwealth. You may regard dictatorship as in every sense reactionary; but weighed in the balance of national prosperity & increased well-being for the greater number benevolent autocracy has a great deal to be said for it - given the men big enough to lead & powerful enough to impress their will on a nation & noble enough to act on high principles only.' He considers Britain to be 'a nation of political dwarfs. Labour has no genius to guide or guard . In the Liberal ranks you see what I mean: Lloyd George genius without principle; Lord Grey principle without a ray of genius.' Torquay, Devon. 4 May 1927. unknown

Eden Phillpotts (1862-1960), English novelist, often writing on Dartmoor [Alfred George Gardiner ['Alpha of the Plough'] (1865-1
Eden Phillpotts novelist. Autograph Letter Signed 'Eden Phill<.>' to A. G. Gardiner editor of the Daily News complaining of a review of his book 'Green Alleys' 'the great cause of the natural born child' and the 'Bastardy Laws'.
Place not stated. 1916. In poor condition on aged and brittle paper with significant chipping to edges involving loss of text including the end of Philpotts's signature. Undated but written in 1916 the year of publication of Phillpotts' 'The Green Alleys'. Headed in blue pencil 'Mr Lynd' i.e for the attention of Daily News columnist Robert Lynd. The letter reads: 'Dear Sir I must record that the opportunity I gave you to do a little in the great cause of the natural born child was not done; & it is a source of deep regret to me that after I had told you of the matter in <a> story "Green Alleys' you allowed a critic to dismiss the subject in that manner. You who stand for democracy might well have been looked to to help to redress this wrong & call attention to a wicked enactment & a crying scandal. That your critic sneers at it in a spirit one has not until now associated with "The Daily News". If it is conceivable t<hat> you approve theh Bastardy Laws one <.> course no more to say except let d<.> know it. I am most truly yo<.> Eden Phill<.>'. Postscript: 'One expected reactionary papers tto slight me - but not you among liberal journals & in the forefront of thought.' Philpotts has attached with a now-rusted staple a cutting of a review of the book by C. E. Lawrence in the Daily Chronicle praising him for being 'plucky' in having 'put a problem before readers in these exacting days'. Place not stated. [1916.] unknown

Edgar Jacob (1844-1920), Bishop of St Albans [John William Colenso (1814-1883), controversial Anglican Bishop of Natal; English
Edgar Jacob Bishop of St Albans; Colenso. Autograph Letter Signed to Rev. R. Wilkins appealing for English Church Union subscribers to ‘help towards undoing the mischief’ caused by Bishop Colenso’s ‘defection’ in Natal.
No date circa 1865. See Jacob’s entry and Colenso’s in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. Folded twice. Addressed to ‘The / Revd. R. Wilkins’. The letter clearly a circular addressed to members of the English Church Union begins without salutation: ‘If you could raise even a few pounds in your branch it would be a great help towards undoing the mischief which the defection of the Chief Pastor of teh Church in Natal has caused & would be a great encouragement to the colonists in any future attempt to provide for the two large neglected districts still unrepresented by the Church. Please accept this as my excuse for troubling you - / And / Believe me / faithfully yours / Edgar Jacob.’ In a postscript Jacob apologizes for being ‘unable owing to press of work to write to you before leaving Oxford.’ He then gives a list of seven subscribers headed by ‘The Bishop of Oxford’ a pound and ‘The Chancellor of the Exchequer’ five guineas. Beneath this list at the foot of the second page is a list in what is probably Wilkins’ hand of four individual contributions totaling £3 1s 6d from the ‘Exeter Branch E. C. U. &c &c’.
