"Stephens joined an Illinois company that left for California on March 28 1849. Surviving this ordal he followed the coast from Los Angeles to San Jose and then to the diggings on the Merced River. Stephens spent time in the diggings along the Merced River and at the mining towns of Chinese Camp and Fine Gold Gulch. With the beginning of the rainy season in the fall of 1850 Stephens took up farming and freighting.
