Belisarius
ont> P. Vaillant : London 1767 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The second English edition of Marmontel's banned novel about the life of Belisarius. The second edition thus of this work being the second English edition. At least three English editions were published in 1767 published in the same year as the first French edition. Collated complete. ESTC citation number T90759. 'Belisarius' is a French novel about the life of Belisarius a Byzantine general. This novel popularised the fictitious tale of Belisarius being reduced to a beggar by Justinian I despite his great services to the Empire throughout his life. Marmontel uses that tale to show an example of the monarchy and its ingratitude towards their faithful servants indicating that Louis XV was another ungrateful monarch. This is an interesting viewpoint as this book was written only twenty years before the uprising of the French Revolution. This novel was banned when it was published by the Sorbonne because chapter XV extols religious tolerance. Written by Jean-Francois Marmontel a French historian and member of the Encyclopedistes movement. He gained the patronage of Madame de Pompadour gaining a place as a civil servant and the management of the official journal 'La Mercure'. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Prior owner's ink inscription to the title page 'M R. Hankin Feb 12 1791'. Condition: In the original calf binding. Externally the rear board is held by one cord only. Indented writing to the front board. Front joint is cracked. Light marks and rubbing to the boards and spine. A small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine. A little bumping to the extremities. Front hinge is strained but remains firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front endpaper. Jean Francois Marmontel
Belisarius
London -P. Vaillant & G. Robinson 1773 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. An attractive English translation of the French writers proscribed novel about Belisarius the Byzantine military leader. The French title is Belisaire and the work was remarkable for its critiqueof the Ancin Regime. Readers have seen criticism of Louis XV in the legend of Belisarius being reduced to poverty by Justinian despite his service to the empire. Moreover a chapter on the virtues of religious tolerance angered the French ecclesiastical authorities. Despite writing tragedies and operas in his early career Marmontel became a historian later on in his life and was appointed professor of history at the Lyce in 1786. He was also a member of the French Academy. Later reduced to poverty by the revolution he wrote a memoir which John Stuart Mill credited with curing him of depression. This copy is from the library of Robert Chambr Vaughan and includes his bookplate to the front pastedown. Condition: In full calf. Externally very smart with just minor rubbing to the extremities of the boards and light shelfware. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown and a contemporary ink signature to the title page. The pages aregenerally bright and clean with only the occasional spot or stain. Firmly bound. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED. London -P. Vaillant & G. Robinson hardcover

MARMONTEL Jean Francois
Contes moraux
à Paris: Chez Merlin 1765. Fine.
