First published in 1918 LES SILENCES DU COLONEL BRAMBLE was a popular novel about a French officer working as an interpreter with the British during World War I and based on Maurois's real experiences. Marie-Louis H. Farge's work has touches of fin-de-siècle aesthetics mixed with the harder geometries of modernism. A 1929 notice in ARTS ET MÉTIERS GRAPHIQUES PARIS for an exhibition of around fifty bindings by Farge remarks on her unusual combinations of tools and ornaments. Laboureur was a highly acclaimed engraver of the same era his limited editions highly sought and often serving as the foundation for fine bindings as here. 9'' x 6.25''. Contemporary half goatskin by Marie-Louise H. Farge spine stamped in gilt and blind. Marbled endpapers top edge gilt. Original wrappers bound in. With a yellow Gallimard promotional slip for the book laid in. Overall a tight and clean copy. This volume contains speeches by Cocteau and Maurois regarding Cocteau's election to the French Academy. The Academy was founded by Cardinal Richelieu in 1634 to preserve and protect the French language. It is highly prestigious with only 40 members who are called "les immortales" and often hold their titles for life. Cocteau succeeded French writer Jérôme Tharaud who died in 1953. A particularly lyrical New York Times article announcing Cocteau's election reads: "M. Cocteau poet and film producer will be clad in a green-faced uniform with a two-corner hat hiding his famous halo of thick whitening hair. As his urbane voice sprinkles witticisms on the 'immortals' his hand will be resting on a sword made by Cartier and decorated with an emerald a gift." Jean Cocteau 1889 - 1963 was a French author artist and filmmaker whose most famous works include the novel Les Enfants Terrible 1929 the play La Machine Infernale 1934 and the ballet Parade 1917 for which Cocteau collaborated with Picasso Erik Satie and other notable artists. A writer for the National Observer declared that "of the artistic generation whose daring gave birth to Twentieth Century Art Cocteau came closest to being a Renaissance man." André Maurois 1885 - 1967 was a French novelist and biographer who wrote acclaimed biographies on Percy Bysshe Shelley Lord Byron Victor Hugo Marcel Proust and others. Un des 20 premiers exemplaires sur Rives avec la suite en bistre n° 12 sans le cuivre annoncé mais enrichi de la gouache originale d'une des illustration signée par l'artiste mine de plomb encre et gouache ; celle-ci est mentionnée à l'encre à la page de justification « dessin original ». La gouache réalisée sur une feuille de papier japon 200 x 250 mm est montée sur un support à encadrement au format de l'exemplaire. . Agent de liaison pendant la première guerre mondiale André Maurois qui ne portait pas encore ce nom « profita de ses observations prises sur le vif pour donner forme à son désir d'écrire. La guerre des tranchées vue sous l'angle des Anglo-Saxons - flegmatiques et considérant l'humour comme un devoir - lui inspira des notes qu'il rédigea dans un style déjà très personnel. Le jeune interprète fut en tous points charmé par ses compagnons de combat et il se peignit lui-même dans cette chronique sous le nom d'Aurelle. Au milieu des pires situations provoquées par la bataille s'enchâssent des conversations des réflexions à caractère "ethnologiques" ainsi que de jolis poèmes en forme de correspondance. Maurois obtint avec ce livre un premier et foudroyant succès : le nom de Bramble restant pour les générations futures caractéristiques de l'Anglais-type » Laffont-Bompiani. Lauréat du Prix Abd-el-Tif en 1925 Louis Berthommé Saint-André est alors le plus jeune pensionnaire de la fameuse villa d'Alger dédiée aux Arts et participe à partir de 1931 à de nombreuses publications illustrées dont plusieurs érotiques pour des oeuvres de Boccace Verlaine Apollinaire ou Baudelaire : « Bien qu'il ait peint beaucoup de paysages il est surtout connu comme peintre de personnages et plus particulièrement de femmes. » Connaissance des arts n° 80 octobre 1958. Ce conte délicieux est une sorte de parabole sur la différence : deux frères Edmond Double dit Patapouf et Thierry Double dit Filifers s'entendent à merveille jusqu'au jour où l'un s'embarque pour la République des Filifers et l'autre pour le Royaume des Patapoufs. Entre les deux pays que tout oppose la guerre se précise très vite. Après des combats houleux les armes des deux clans se trouvent réunies par d'heureux mariages qui donneront des petits Patapoufilifers. Véritable réussite ce livre est aussi un outil pédagogique efficace pour expliquer aux enfants les mécanismes du racisme. Jean Bruller l'illustrateur disparaît avec l'entrée en Résistance : dans la clandestinité il prendra le nom de Vercors et livrera le texte bouleversant devenu un classique et un livre étendard de la Résistance : Le Silence de la mer. André Maurois eut trois enfants d'un premier mariage dont Michelle née en 1914 à laquelle cet envoi est probablement destiné. One of Andre Maurois' best-known works in the original French. With an ink inscription by Andre Maurois to the title page. Ex libris William Tyrell. Tyrrell served in the Foreign Office from 1889 to 1928. He was private secretary to the Permanent Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Thomas Sanderson from 1896 to 1903 and then secretary to the Committee of Imperial Defence from 1903 to 1904 before being appointed as second secretary at the British embassy in Rome. He returned firstly as precis-writer from 1905 to 1907 and later with Louis Mallet as private secretary to Sir Edward Grey from 1907 to 1915. Tyrrell supported the Entente Cordiale with France and did not think a rapprochement with Imperial Germany was possible before 1914. In the spring of 1915 Tyrrell appears to have suffered an almost total breakdown and he was moved to a less stressful job at the Home Office before being made head of the Political Intelligence Department from 1916 to 1919. He was Permanent Under-Secretary from 1925 to 1928 and British Ambassador to France from 1928 to 1934. As Permanent Under-Secretary he did not think there was a military threat from Japan and that Russia was the enemy and as Ambassador he worked for an Anglo-French agreement. He was also suspicious of Nazi Germany. He was sworn into the Privy Council in 1928 and made a Peer as Baron Tyrrell of Avon in the County of Southampton in 1929. In 1935 he was appointed President of the British Board of Film Censors a post he held until 1947. This book seems to date from his time in Paris as British Ambassador. Numbered 95 to the verso of the title page. Maurois' first novel Les silences du colonel Bramble was a witty and socially realistic account of that experience. It was an immediate success in France. It was translated and became popular in the United Kingdom and other English-speaking countries as The Silence of Colonel Bramble. Many of his other works have also been translated into English as they often dealt with British people or topics such as his biographies of Disraeli Byron and Shelley. In a quarter-morocco binding with marbled boards. Externally sound though with some rubbing and a few marks. Internally firmly bound.
