New York 1944. Fine. Autograph Letter Signed from W. S. Maugham to composer Bernard Wagenaar listing the engagements before he heads to South Carolina that prevent him from visiting. The engagments include addressing a meeting of Poets Essayists Novelists International. Maugham writes that he looks forward to seeing him next summer. 1½ pages 8vo "Ritz-Carlton Hotel" stationery. With the original mailing envelope: New York postmarked October 31 1944. Maugham mentions heading down to South Carolina which is where he spent winters from 1941 through 1946 Yemassee S.C. The house was known as Parkers and we have a number of volumes inscribed to Maugham please inquire if interested during this time; volumes which remained at the house well after his death. 1937. To "Dear Mr. Seale" one page on "5 Portland Place W.1." stationery. No legible date but 1937-1938.<br/> <br/> This is Maugham's response to a Mr. Seale who had apparently asked about a good introductory book on philosophy. The text of this letter is: Cyril Joad brought out with Gollancz last year or the year before a book called I think a Handbook to Philosophy which is very clear and readable with a very good bibliography at the end of each chapter; this I think will give you exactly what you want. I am not quite sure if that is the exact title but any good bookseller will be able to have the book for you. I know Gollancz is the publisher. Yours sincerely signed W.S. Maugham We do not know who "Mr Seale" was the greeting and the closing imply that Maugham did not know him but Cyril E.M. Joad 1891-1953 was quite a character -- an English philosopher who did indeed write A GUIDE TO PHILOSOPHY Maugham was close published by Victor Gollancz in 1936; the book is still in print and is still considered to be a very readable introduction to philosophy. A few years later Joad would become part of "The Brains Trust" a BBC wartime-and-later radio program that featured a panel of experts providing unprepared answers to questions submitted by the audience. Joad became quite a celebrity as a result of his witty participation on the program but was also one of the most controversial UK personalities of wartime -- as he was an atheist had been a conscientious objector during WWI and was a diehard pacifist during WWII. All of this celebrity would come crashing down in "The Great Train Ticket Scandal of 1948" in which Joad was discovered sitting in a first-class rail car with a third-class ticket -- which quickly revealed a years-long pattern of sticking it to the railway and to passengers paying their rightful fares; Joad was immediately thrown off the show his reputation sullied and after converting away from atheism he died five years later. Specifically the men focus on Driffield's first wife Rosie an honest and free-spirited woman who is considered Driffield's "skeleton in the closet" because of her promiscuity despite being the author's muse. In his introduction to a later edition of the book Maugham wrote "I am willing enough to agree with common opinion that Of Human Bondage is my best work
.But the book I like best is Cakes and Ale

After Of Human Bondage Cakes and Ale is probably Maugham's finest novel and certainly one of his most popular. Of it Maugham wrote: "The book I like best is Cakes and Ale. It was an amusing book to write". Notes the author's biographer: "His output had its ups and downs. Cakes and Ale was one of the ups. He went on writing for another thirty years but never matched it in style or structure. It was a pity that the scandal surrounding the models for the main characters drew the attention of the literary community away from the book's real merit." Today of course it is those models who provide the fun: Driffield the Grand Old Man of Letters Thomas Hardy and the writer-on-the-make Alroy Kear a highly unflattering portrait of the novelist Hugh Walpole who never forgave Maugham for writing his most malicious--but also his funniest--book. The first-person narrator is identified on the dust jacket flap as Ashenden but only on page 81 of the text does he identify himself the "Master Willie" of the sentence following suggests an autobiographical touch. Driffield once scorned for his realist representation of late-Victorian working-class characters had in his later years come to be lionised by scholars of English letters. The second Mrs Driffield a nurse to the ailing Edward after his first wife left him is known for her propriety and her interest in augmenting and cementing her husband's literary reputation. Her only identity is that of caretaker of her husband in life and of his reputation in death. The essence of the story is a question. Dust-jacket lightly soiled and rubbed to edges with some small nibbles and nicks to edges free from major loss or large tears. Overall a Very Good copy in a Very Good dust-jacket. Very Good in a Very Good dust-jacket. First edition with the correct issues points for the first printing as listed in Stott e.g. "in" instead of "it" at p.181 line 4. This delicious satire of London's inter-war Literati originally serialised in Harper's Magazine from March to July 1930 was Maugham's personal favourite of all the books he had written.
