Garden City: Garden City Publishing Company 1934. Motion picture tie-in edition with a wonderful pictorial wraparound band. This book was issued to coincide with the release of the 1934 John Cromwell directed film version of the novel starring Leslie Howard Bette Davis Frances Dee Kay Johnson Reginald Denny Alan Hale and Reginald Owen. The wraparound band is four and a half inches wide and illustrated with black & white still photographs from the film. Across the top of the front panel portion is printed: “W. SOMERSET MAUGHAM’S GREAT NOVEL from which the LESLIE HOWARD Picture was taken - 766 Pages - THE COMPLETE STORY.†The photographs on the front panel portion is a collage of scenes showing Leslie Howard twice in three photographs with Bette Davis and Frances Dee. On the spine portion is a large close-up portrait of Leslie Howard’s head. The book itself is a very good copy with some flaking to the gilt-stamping in a very good dust jacket with some chipping mostly at head of spine some tears and some edge creasing. The dust jacket is yellow and has a quote from Theodore Dreiser “It sings it has color. It has rapture. In viewing it one finds nothing to criticize or regret.†Very scarce in this form. Somerset Maugham These notes were made in China most of them in pencil on paper bought by the wayside while I was being carried by my horse on the long journey from Chang-King to Cheng Tri; & I meant them to serve as material for a book. But when I returned to Europe it seemed to me that by writing them up I should destroy what freshness they had; & so I preferred to leave them in this disconnected form. W.M." Very good in the rare original dust jacket which is in good condition with losses to the front panel and spine. Rare and desirable an in the original jacket and inscribed. A series of short sketches composed during his journey along the Yangtze River in 1919–1920 W. Somerset Maugham’s A Chinese Screen captures not only the author’s impressions of China but also his observations of the expatriates he encountered there. While the work provides vivid glimpses of Chinese landscapes customs and daily life it is just as concerned with the Westerners who attempted to settle or travel in the region. Their struggles to understand—or even tolerate—the cultural differences they faced often reveal more about the anxieties and limitations of colonial attitudes than about China itself. Somerset Maugham's reflections on China following his journey there with a presentation inscription by the dedicatee Syrie Maugham 1879-1955 then the author's wife.On a Chinese Screen comprises a series of short sketches drawn from Maugham's journey along the Yangtze River between 1919 and 1920 focusing on encounters that highlight cultural tensions between East and West. The figures he depicts - missionaries army officers and company managers - often appear ill at ease in rural China. Maugham's later novel The Painted Veil 1925 also draws on this experience.This copy was presented Syrie Maugham to whom the book is dedicated to the painter and interior and textile designer Allan Walton 1891-1948. Syrie daughter of Thomas Barnardo was a leading interior designer of the 1920s and '30s renowned for her influential all-white decorative schemes. She was first married to Henry Wellcome before leaving him for Maugham; the couple had one child Liza and married in 1917 divorcing in 1929 after a highly publicised separation. Walton a friend of Syrie's developed a markedly different aesthetic favouring bold colours prints and rich textiles. hardcover

London: T. Fisher Unwin 1899. First Edition. Hardcover. As usually the case with this book the weak hinges are cracked in this case with complete paper separation though both covers are still tight. The text of this title is often found browned but here it is bright and clean but for the endpapers and the half title page though with no serious effect on Maugham's inscription. The front free endpaper is detached but present. The dark green cloth with black lettering is fresh and bright. Very Good with a singularly superb inscription. The second issue of three with edges trimmed smooth. There was no American edition. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the half title page incorporating the printed title of the book in the inscription: "These are quite the author's/first stories & were written/when he was very very/young & did not know/how to write./ORIENTATIONS/by/W. Somerset Maugham." A scarce title by Maugham his first book of short stories rarely found signed let alone with such a fabulous inscription. <br/><br/> T. Fisher Unwin hardcover

Published in London by Heinemann in 1953 this signed dust jacket design by the noted dust jacket designer Barlow is in fine condition and is much more bright and vivid than the printed dust jacket. Strikingly done in shades or maroon black and silver the artwork is very handsomely framed and matted. Image size approximately 9 by 11 inches 13 by 15 1/2 inches overall. The image shows all the lettering on the front panel and that of the spine area as well showing the publisher’s windmill logo. Original artwork for the first edition dust jackets of W. Somerset Maugham is rarely encountered. unknown
