In Ceylon a British government official recommended that Maugham visit Keng Tung in the remote Shan States of north Burma. Maugham sailed to Rangoon and traveled on to Mandalay where he set off by mule for the 26-day trek to Keng Tung. Then he made his way to the Thai border and on to Bangkok by car reaching Cambodia by boat where he toured the temple complex at Angkor Wat. The final leg was by river to Saigon and then along the coast via Hue to Hanoi. N. B. By 1908 he had four plays running at once in the West End of London. In 1927 the author Somerset Maugham purchased the property and commissioned Henri Delmotte Marcel Guilgot and the young American architect Barry Dierks to eliminate the villa's original neo-oriental elements to classicize the facades and patio and to modernize the layout by creating a staircase. Villa La Mauresque became Maugham's main residence until his death in 1965.<br/> <br/> William Somerset Maugham was an English writer known for his plays novels and short stories. To My dear David: Maugham thanks a friend of his for his letter of congratulations; apologies for using the typewriter; in part: ". . .the volume of letters cables and telegrams has been such that it is the only way I can cope with it. . .my love to you both. . ." On June 9 1954 the honors list ammounced naming Maugham a Companion of Honor. Maugham was proud of the recognition and travelled to London to receive the medal personally from Queen Elizabeth II.</p>
