Haycraft Queen Cornerstone and Queen's Quorum. The basis for the 1936 British espionage thriller film "The Secret Agent" directed by Alfred Hitchcock adapted from the play by Campbell Dixon which in turn was loosely based on two stories from Ashenden. First Edition First State with typo "won" on page 147 line 14. Publisher's mid-blue cloth binding blocked in gilt and black. Text block a little toned but with none of the usual spotting to the first and last few pages of the book overall a near fine or slightly better copy with bright boards very clean internally and gilt really bright. The book is inscribed to Edward Wassermann the prominent banker collector and philanthropist who was the subject of a famous portrait by Salvador Dali. "For/ Edward Wassermann/ The Blackstable of this/ book is Whitstable & the/ house Driffield ended his days in stands between/ Whitstable &/ Swalecliffe. / W. Somerset Maugham". Wassermann had several books inscribed to him by Somerset Maugham and there was clearly a close friendship between them. In a lovely example of the D/W priced 7/6 net to the spine as called for. which is crisp and fine with some trivial edge-wear and one short 1/2 inch tear to the top edge of the front panel. An excellent example of Maugham's favourite novel 'because in its pages lives for me again the woman with the lovely smile who was the model for Rosie Driffield'. Provenance: With the book-plate of Edward Wassermann partially affixed to the front paste-down which shows a patch of old glue residue to the top 2 cm from when it was initially put in. In the uncommon original dustwrapper which reproduces the book front cover and spine in gold on black paper with 8/6 price still intact on the front inner flap. Lower panel has list of works by Maugham printed in black on white. Loss to the top and bottom of the wrapper not affecting the lettering. FIRST EDITION. Points of View is a collection of essays by W. Somerset Maugham first printed in 1958 the penultimate work in book form that the author published.<br> It consists of five essays: "The Three Novels of a Poet" "The Saint" "Prose and Dr. Tillotson" "The Short Story" and "Three Journalists." It took him six years to compile Points of View.The five essays have in common Maugham's rumination on the effects of the life of his chosen subjects on their works. He studied in details each of them and discussed significant events he could find in biographies and letters that determine the content and mode of their creations. Although it may not be felt at the first reading Maugham has selected the incidents with care. His thesis is that it is the author's personality that matters. He sees in each of them idiosyncrasies so prominent and intriguing that compensate for whatever else is lacking.<br> Furthermore these essays are like one long defence against the accusations that Maugham received for using real persons as models for his fictional characters. Putting his subjects' lives side by side with their artistic creations it is hard to argue otherwise and it would be a meaningless exercise. Writers/artists use their own lives as materials they transform and rearrange them just as the demiurge shapes the world into meaningful existence. The people that Maugham has chosen are public figures except the swarmi who may not be familiar to his readers. They have come to our time and achieved a certain immortality. In this way they have succeeded. His first essay is on Goethe a revered name in literary history. ""As early as 1911 Maugham had retired temporarily from the theatre to work on his long novel Of Human Bondage. He was to correct the proofs under the admiring eyes of Desmond MacCarthy in a small hotel at Malo near Dunkirk; the two men were drivers in an ambulance unit for which they had volunteered at the outbreak of war in 1914 Of Human Bondage was published in 1915. It was less noticed in wartime London than in New York where Theodore Dreiser reviewed it with enthusiasm.
