The Complete Short Stories of W. Somerset Maugham Vol 1-2
New York: Doubleday c. 1952. The books are in fine condition. The slipcase is in good condition and shows some minor wear. . Binding: Contemporary full grey cloth binding. Gilt ornament on top cover. Dense gilt lines and text on spine. Green pasted and free endpapers. Black slipcase with pasted title cover on side. Notes: William Somerset Maugham 1874 – 1965 was a British playwright novelist and short story writer. He was among the most popular writers of his era and reputedly the highest paid author during the 1930s.<br>After losing both his parents by the age of 10 Maugham was raised by a paternal uncle who was emotionally cold. Not wanting to become a lawyer like other men in his family Maugham eventually trained and qualified as a medical doctor physician. The first run of his first novel Liza of Lambeth 1897 sold out so rapidly that Maugham gave up medicine to write full-time.<br>During the First World War he served with the Red Cross and in the ambulance corps before being recruited in 1916 into the British Secret Intelligence Service for which he worked in Switzerland and Russia before the October Revolution of 1917. During and after the war he travelled in India and Southeast Asia; all of these experiences were reflected in later short stories and novels.<br> Size: 8vo 210x140mm. <p>William Heinemann London 1908 First Edition period re-binding 12mo. 310 p. quarter maroon cloth over brown paper boards title paper label to spine.</p><p>boards have wear through at each corner resulting in bumped/curved corners. Rear board has an indentation level with the bottom of the paper label on spine; perhaps as a result of improper shelving. Many pages have soiling and/or foxing as well as turned down corners. Based on my cursory review the binding itself is still strong. Photo of Aleister Crowley is affixed to front paste down and a very brief review is pasted to the ffep both presumably clipped from a contemporary periodical as the price indicated for the volume is "15s". <em><strong>NB: not in original binding this book has been re-bound many years ago- period binding but not publishers </strong></em>Ex-libris- English bibliophile and Aleister Crowley scholar Nicholas C. MAUGHAM, W Somerset
A Collection of 21 Pieces of Correspondence to his American Editors at Doubleday 1950-1963
St. Jean-Cap Ferrat France and others 1963. Unbound. Very Good. Archive of correspondence consisting of small octavo or letter-size sheets most typed on Maugham’s Villa Mauresque stationery one in manuscript and averaging 4-5 lines. Each letter Signed or Initialed by Maugham in ink. Many of the letters with later secretarial annotation mostly in pencil occasional pin/staple holes and marginal chips some tanning very good and sound. <br /> <br /> An interested collection of notes and letters from English author and playwright W. Somerset Maugham to George Jenks Shively and Ken McCormick his American editors at Doubleday. The letters cover the period 1950 to 1963; six are addressed to McCormick and the rest to Shively. Of particular interest are references to the publication of Maugham's books Maugham's Choice of Kipling's Best 1953 Points of View 1959 and Selected Prefaces and Introductions 1963. Much of it revolves around the sending and receipt of proofs contracts copyrights etc. but of his lengthy introduction to the Kipling anthology Maugham writes that it "was not only a matter of reading Kipling’s stories all over again but also of reading everything of importance that had been written about him.†In two letters dated 1952 and 1953 he discusses charges of plagiarism brought against him. One references the suit brought against him by Konrad Bercovici claiming that Maugham's "The Verger" was based on one of Bercovici's stories; it is mentioned on p.545 of Ted Morgan's Maugham: A Life. Maugham in the letter present here: “It looks to me as though the story were as old as the story of Jacob and Esau.†<br /> <br /> Maugham seems to be quite happy with the work of his American publishers. Upon receiving a copy of The Art of Fiction 1955 he writes: "The book arrived to-day and it looks to me as though you have all made a very good job of it." In 1962 Maugham writes of another publication: "I have no general instructions. I leave the whole thing in your very capable hands."<br /> <br /> Shively was a senior editor at Doubleday and Company as well as the author of two novels. In an 1975 article in The New York Times on Ken McCormick's retirement he is described as "possibly the dean of American editors." The article also notes that he worked his way up from bookstore clerk to Editor-in-Chief. McCormick on Maugham: "I was actually Maugham's editor after World War II although it's ridiculous to say ‘edit' because Maugham's stuff was so impeccable." <br /> <br /> An interesting collection of correspondence with Maugham's American editors over more than a decade. A detailed list is available on request. unknown

Maugham, W Somerset
A Man of Honour
William Heinemann. First trade edition published by William Heinemann in 1912. The play made its debut on the stage in 1903. Maugham got 150 copies of his play printed in 1903 to give it out on opening night and as working copies for the actors. This first trade edition appeared in 1912 in wraps and this hardback edition. This copy is in very good condition. The boards have a couple of bumps along the right hand side edge of the front board. The spine is faded. There is a light mark to the front board. Otherwise the boards and pages are clean and there are no other marks bookplates foxing or ink. It is at least a very good copy overall. The author W. Somerset Maugham has inscribed to the front free end paper "For Robert Loraine from his friend the author". Robert Bilcliffe Loraine was a stage actor and producer. He appeared in one of Somerset Maugham's plays "Smith" in 1909 and from the inscription seemed to be on very good terms with him. Loraine would also go on to join the Royal Flying Corp in the Great War and would be awarded the Military Cross and Distinguished Service Order for his valantry and deeds in the air rising to the rank of Major. A rare signed presentation copy with the close association between the two. . Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1912. William Heinemann hardcover

MAUGHAM, W Somerset
A Man Of Honour.
London: Chapman and Hall Limited 1903. First edition first impression. One of 150 copies printed at the author's request to be used during rehearsals of the play and sold at the first performances in February 1903. This pamphlet is rarely seen in commerce as Maugham put it in his preface to Frederick Bason's bibliography in 1931: "But there is another little book of mine which must be scarcer still than the first edition of Liza of Lambeth. It is the paper bound edition of A Man of Honour which was issued by Messrs Chapman and Hall. This was a play published in The Fortnightly Review by the late W. L. Courtney who thought well of it and at my urgent request the publishers bound up a few copies of the sheets two hundred and fifty I think for sale in the theatre during the two performances which the Stage Society gave it. I am afraid the venture did not profit them for I doubt whether fifty copies were sold and I suppose the rest have long been pulped". Bason describes A Man of Honour as "one of Maugham's rarest works and. his scarcest play". Octavo. Original cream wrappers printed in black. Housed in a green cloth-backed grey board folder. Wrappers neatly rebacked and with small repair to lower left-hand corner of front wrapper split to top edge of spine wrappers slightly soiled. A very good copy of this fragile publication. Bason pp. 10; 53; Loren & Frances Rothschild Collection V 27; Stott A6a. hardcover
