Publiée dans Marlo Johnston « Lettres inédites de Maupassant à la comtesse Potocka » Histoires littéraires n°40 octobre-novembre-décembre 2009. Maupassant à Antibes à l'occasion d'un mariage adresse une étonnante lettre à la Comtesse Potocka. Elle est à la fois son amie et une femme qu'il courtise par goût ou mondanité. De son côté elle l'intègre rapidement à son groupe de « Macchabées » un cercle composé de soupirants sur lequelle elle règne en maîtresse absolue. Il gourmande Potocka pour sa bienveillance envers une nouvelle récemment parue Mademoiselle Perle : « J'ai été bien longtemps Madame sans vous écrire parce que vous m'avez révolté - littérairement - en me faisant des compliments sur Melle Perle une ordure j'en suis certain. » Il se sent tout à fait habilité à critiquer son  ouvrage : « J'ai le droit d'être sévère étant donné le nom de l'auteur . » Il soupçonne l'entourage masculin de la Comtesse d'influencer son jugement : « Certes vous avez été influencée par les hommes considérables et incompétents que vous honorez de votre confiance pour avoir apprécié ainsi cette nouvelle digne d'un prix Mointhyon Je ne sais même pas comment on écrit Montyon autant par la forme que le fond. » Maupassant reprend son procédé précédent : il se met à distance d'un groupe dont il fait pourtant partie. Il est lui aussi des salons de la Comtesse il ne diffère en rien des « hommes considérables » qu'il cite. Le prix Montyon qu'il prétend ne pas savoir orthographier est une récompense littéraire destinée aux ouvrages « les plus utiles aux mÂœurs ». Il avoue pourtant quelques lignes plus loin : « J'ai voulu prouver que tout le monde confond la littérature avec la Vertu - alors qu'elles n'ont rien en commun. » Une entreprise que l'on peut qualifier de morale. Mais la morale chez Maupassant cède devant l'écriture : « Eh bien après cet essai déloyal j'opte pour la littérature. » Mademoiselle Perle a été publiée à peine un mois plus tôt le 16 janvier 1886 dans le Figaro. Malgré tout il se lance dans une critique lapidaire et drôle de son texte sans manquer d'égratigner sa correspondante au passage : « Comment avez-vous pu juger avec bienveillance l'histoire aussi banale qu'invraisemblable de cette famille d'imbéciles vivant derrière l'Observatoire comme au fond de la province - Comme c'est neuf . Oh ! Oh ! Oh ! Ah ! Ah ! Ah ! que voilà une fable ingénieuse ! Et la révélation a lieu d'une façon charmante au sujet d'un gâteau des rois ! L'une pleure dans un linge à craie ce qui est d'un comique sur et l'autre reconnaissant tombe à terre comme une écharpe ce qui est d'un effet certain ! » Il ne semble trouver aucune grâce à son ouvrage malgré son succès : « Certes l'invention de ce fabliau à la Berquin est d'une certaine platitude l'observation d'une parfaite inexactitude le développement d'une naïveté attendrissante qui a attendri tout le monde. Car j'ai reçu beaucoup de lettres. » Qu'importe le succès car selon Maupassant le danger est tout autre : « je dis qu'en écrivant de pareilles sucreries vertueuses sans trouvailles d'aucune sorte sans composition artiste et même sans adresse de plume on arrive peut-être. à l'académie. Mais c'est tout et pas assez. » Il s'excuse de faire le difficile : « Voilà comme je suis grincheux dans ma solitude où la vie n'est pas gaie. Je travaille ; je travaille beaucoup ; j'ai mal aux yeux mal à l'estomac mal aux reins ; et mon cÂœur bat jour et nuit. » Il reproche à sa correspondante les manières dont elle use avec lui comme avec ses autres soupirants du groupe des « Macchabées ». Il pense « . très souvent avec une certaine tristesse à une femme dont je voudrais bien être vraiment sincèrement l'ami mais dont la bienveillance à mon égard est si variable que l'amitié avec elle a un équilibre de danseur sur la corde raide. » Mais il se venge quelques lignes plus loin en évoquant ses visites à ses amies Marie Kann et Mme Legrand Marie-Clothilde Legrand comtesse de Fournès puis son ami le peintre Henri Gervex : « que Mme Legrand porte de duc en duc de Prince en Prince est en train de devenir à l'aide de son hôtesse qui le croit ravi un communard régicide bien qu'on l'ait fait passer dans ce monde pour un catholique pratiquant. » Enfin après ses quelques traits humoristiques il reprend son attitude sombre nettement aggravée lors de ses dernières années qui lui reste à vivre : « je ne sors guère qu'en noir et je m'ennuie tellement à la seule pensée de tout ce que je pourrais faire pour me distraire que je n'ai même plus guère le courage de me mouvoir.  Et cela madame n'est pas de la pose en prose.» Provenance : collection Jean Bonna. hardcover‎
