Actually this volume is quite good but the gutters are cracked; 346 p. immaculate and unmarked--not ex-lib. no former owner's name; frontis. ill. in sepia has tissue guard; deckle edges; paper very fine strong only mildly age-toned; pref. by Paul Bourget and introd. by Robert Arnot. Despite the cracked gutters the volume is square and handsome the text-block intact and well-attached ; wear to red boards with blue spine ornamented in blue is moderate the gilt lettering on a red and blue patches on gilt-decorated spine still legible. This is not the reprint but the original of this particular translation of Une vie published by Nonesuch in 1942; same translator and illustrator with introd. by Edouard Jaloux but with decorative green and white patterned boards rather than leather binding kept in fine condition by slipcase itself sturdy but discolored by age and slightly rubbed; 215 p. immaculate and unmarked anywhere--not ex-lib. no former owner's name; many lovely color ill. by Edy Legrand most full-page; binding firm; faint "old book" aroma included at no extra charge as gauge of authenticity and added charm.
