Venise: chez Guillaume Zerletii 1768. Two volumes. 8vo. 230 x 155 mm. 9 x 6 inches. xlviii 272 pp.; 262 2 pp. Engraved frontispiece two engraved title-pages folding map and 24 vignettes. Bound in contemporary paste-paper boards soiled but sound; some staining to lower right corner of some of the leaves. With faults an acceptable copy. Appears to be the first edition printed by Zerletti who published a more expensive edition in 1788. This is the first appearance of the engravings by Giovanni Volpato 1740-1803 a professional engraver from Bassano who worked with the Remondinis' publishing house. "In 1762 he was brought by Bartolozzi to Joseph Wagner's shop in Venice" and worked with several printers until 1772 when he moved to Rome to run his own shop and open a school of engraving. In 1786 he published a book with 36 plates entitled Principi del Disegno. Raphael Morghen was among his many pupils in Rome. The in this edition of Les Aventures de Télémaque Volpato's his engravings are in the classical style and some of them demonstrate his skill capturing the moment and highlighting the action of the scene. He is best remembered for series of plates after the frescos in the Vatican. Hind Short History of Engraving and Etching p. 209. His office in Cambray was one of the richest benefices in France and upon his banishment from the court of Louis XIV for the publication of his Maxims of the Saints he dedicated himself fully to his position making himself in all that he did the perfect churchman Encyclopaedia Britannica 253.<br>Â Â Â Â The "lady" was Eliza L. Cabot Follen 17871860 the Boston-born author translator and abolitionist. She used her own translation "a free one; but sedulous care has been taken never to depart from the spirit of the author" v and one of her concerns in selection is to de-Catholicize the archbishop allowing his more universal appreciation for as she says his "writings necessarily contain many things that could not be acceptable to Christians of all denominations and have therefore been uniformly omitted" v.<br>Â Â Â Â Fénelon's appearance in Follen's selective epitome would surely have amused him and it pleased the book-buying public: This is the works third edition.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: A note states that "this book belonged to Grandmother Dyer: Ann Eliza Morse"; Charles Dyer Norton has also signed an endpaper in ink. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â American Imprints 7028. <p>New edition published in small numbers by Antoine-Augustin Renouard and printed by Paul Renouard rue de l'Hirondelle.<br />This work was the pretext for the first separate publication of the Lettre à Louis XIV whose original manuscript had recently been purchased at public auction by Antoine-Augustin Renouard February 26 1825. This acquisition removed all doubt as to the authenticity of this famous letter.<br />The illustration consists of three portraits of Fénelon Louis XIV and Madame de Maintenon and a facsimile of the manuscript.</p><p><strong>Copy printed on straw paper with a handwritten note from a Renouard: <em>"this volume is printed entirely on straw paper. R.".</em></strong><br /><strong>The catalog of Antoine-Augustin Renouard's library Potier 1854 indicates that for this work "f<em>ew copies have been printed both on this paper vellum and on another kind also white vellum paper although made of straw."</em></strong><br />As for the portraits they were printed on vergé straw paper and the facsimile of the letter on the same paper as the text on papier vélin de paille.<br />There are few examples of other works printed on straw paper in Renouard's library catalog.</p><p><strong>A very rare specimen of straw wove paper chosen by Antoine-Augustin Renouard as bibliophilic paper.</strong></p><p><em>Catalogue d'une précieuse collection de livres manuscrits autographes dessins et gravures composant la bibliothèque de feu M. There was also a 1734 folio edition of this work limited to 150 copies. The engravings of the two editions are similar. Our copy contains the suppressed "Ode" last six pages of the text. First edition published 1699: it was also considered an attack on the divine right of absolute monarchy and the the most popular book of its time. BRUNET. p.1214 calls it a "belle edition." GORDON N. Bispo de Cambrai preceptor do Delfim de França desde 1689 membro da Academia Francesa de Letras poeta e escritor. Escreveu obras em diversos géneros e poesias mas as mais importantes e célebres são as obras com fins pedagógicos que ainda hoje são estudadas. As suas ideias sobre educação a sua simpatia por sociedades utópicas e as posições teológicas sobre o quietismo levaram a que fosse alvo de fortes crÃticas e se visse envolvido em polémicas nomeadamente com Bossuet.
