All edges of boards gilt and gilt borders on inside of boards. Hinges cracked and boards loosening inner hinges crudely repaired. A bit of brownspotting but internally a very nice copy. � The very rare Bruxelles-edition published same year as the first edition Paris Barbin. <br>F�nelon's main work written when he was a tutor to the Duke of Burgundy in order to hold up Ulysses as an example for the young prince. F�nelon was a leader of the Quetism heresy and in 1699 the year T�lemaque appeared Pope Innocent XII condemned his writings. <br>The true first edition of F�n�lon's T�lemaque appeared in one volume in 1699 under the title "Suite du quatri�me livre de l'Odyss�e d'Hom�re ou les Aventures de T�l�maque fils d'Ulysse" and containing only half of what we consider T�l�maque today. According to Brunet the first edition was suppressed and Moetjens printed a pirate-edition called the second edition in Haag with the same year and date June and a bit later the same year the second part appeared. Several editions appeared the same year and Brunet mentions one without printer or Place but Paris and the Li�ge- and Bruxelles-editions. "Dans les diff�rentes �ditions que nous venons de d�crire dans lesquelles il le soit sont celles de LI�GE 1699 et de BRUXELLES FR. FOPPENS m�me date l'une et l'autre impr. en France en 2 vol. in-12 et en dix livres." Brunet II:1212. Foppens also printed an edition in Bruxelles 1700 but that is divided into 16 books. All early editions of this work are scarce and the first edition is almost impossible to get a hold of. This main work of French literature has been printed numerous times after the author's death 1715 and editions printed before his death are a great rarity. The later editions were corrected and divided into numerous books not intended in the original manuscript.<br><br>"Une autre circonstance allait aggrever la situation de l'archev�que de Cambray. Peu de temps apr�s sa condemnation parut le livre qui l'a rendu le plus populaire et qui apr�s la "Bible" et l'"Imitation de J�sus-Christ" est un de ceux qui ont eu plus d'�ditions: "Les Aventures de T�l�maque". The controversial but highly popular work was among other things accused of satirically portraying Louis XIV and thereby publicly humiliating him -this was probably not the intention but there is no doubt that the work was critical towards the reigning regime and put forth many ideas not previously heard of. In true utopian political manner F�n�lon warns against overgrowth of the metropolis and preaches groundbreaking doctrines like free trade international arbitration etc. He actually foresees the French Revolution as a result of the flourishing despotism so visible in France at the time. Lamartine in his "Life of F�n�lon" describes the saintly poet as the first Radical and the first communist of his century though not to his own knowledge and he directly traces the Utopias which produced the revolutions of 1793 and 1848 to his groundbreaking work "The Adventures of Telemachus". Especially the part "Voyage en Salente" is considered very important for the study of utopian literature but the entire work is characterized by the attempt to represent people as they might have behaved and might still be were they governed by sages and saints and according to the laws of God. The work represents a religious ideal where God is always higher than man; it is greatly political greatly influenced by the appreciation of ancient Greek life and is designed to evoke the feeling of honour responsibility and religion in the young prince. <br>See Brunet II: 1210-1212. Intéressante préface de Didot qui précise son entreprise et qui distingue bien le projet de cette édition de celle qu'il réalisa 5 ans plus tôt au format in-folio sur l'imprimerie de Monsieur. Les figures sont annoncées dans la préface de Cochin et de Moreau Le jeune Didot précisant que celles de Cochin avaient été faites pour une autre édition. On trouve habituellement seule la première livraison de ces gravures soit un frontispice et 6 figures mais elles ne se trouvent pas dans cet exemplaire qui a été truffé d'une suite de Marillier légèrement plus tardive mais en premier tirage. Cohen ajoute par ailleurs qu'on joint souvent à cette édition la suite de Marillier ou celle de Moreau. Très belle publication des presses de Didot du plus immortel livre pédagogique qui fut écrit dans lequel l'on suit les pérégrinations de Télémaque et de Mentor ; les aventures étant prétexte à un traité moral et politique ; celui-ci fut perçu à l'époque comme une critique du règne de Louis XIV et Fénelon tomba en disgrâce tout en gagnant la gloire avec cette oeuvre. � De l'imprimerie de Didot Jeune unknown

La démonstration de l'existence de Dieu tirée de ses attributs . parue en 1718 comme une seconde partie n'est en réalité pas une seconde partie. Extraite des manuscrits de Fénelon cette oeuvre inachevée est en effet antérieure à la Demonstration de l'existence de Dieu tirée de la connoissance de la nature elle ne repose que sur des fragments d'un projet. En juxtaposant ultérieurement les deux parties les éditeurs publient en fait deux oeuvres différentes écrites à des périodes différentes. Reliure en plein maroquin bordeaux glacé fin XIXe signée Chambrolle-Duru. Dos à nerfs janséniste. Titre et date dorés. Riche frise intérieure. Tranches dorées. Une très discrète restauration au mors supérieur. La Démonstration est à la fois une oeuvre philosophique et une oeuvre théologique. Fénelon s'adresse à des esprits forts ou à des esprits chrétiens dont la foi reposerait sur la raison ; il emprunte ainsi son argumentation à une apologétique de type cartésien. L'idée maîtresse étant que le spectacle de la nature donne à voir l'activité du créateur fénelon mettant en parallèle l'ordre et l'harmonie du monde à celui de l'action divine réenchantant ainsi la vision mécaniciste du corps et de l'âme. Free USA Shipping ---- Les aventures de Télémaque fils d'Ulysse The adventures of Telemachus son of Ulisses with the original title is a didactic French novel by Fénelon Archbishop of Cambrai who in 1689 became tutor to the seven-year-old Duc de Bourgogne grandson of Louis XIV and second in line to the throne. It was published anonymously in 1699 and reissued in 1717 by his family. The slender plot fills out a gap in Homer's Odyssey recounting the educational travels of Telemachus son of Ulysses accompanied by his tutor Mentor who is revealed at the end of the story to be Minerva goddess of wisdom in disguise. Fénelon described his book as a prose "epic": oddly for such an admirer of the humanism of the ancient world he was so much a product of the age of reason as to believe that poetry was obsolete. Yet his choice of simple vernacular prose as a means of spreading morality and enlightened ideas to the widest possible audience including women and children was very much in the spirit of the 18th-century age of Enlightenment. Telemachus is a figure in Greek mythology the son of Odysseus and Penelope and a central character in Homer's Odyssey. The first four books of the Odyssey focus on Telemachus's journeys in search of news about his father who has yet to return home from the Trojan War and are traditionally given the title the Telemachy.
