Marbled endpapers. The Spanish conquest of the Aztecs and Incas and the German colonisation of Venezuela both occurred during his reign. The personal union of his European and American territories spanning over nearly 4 million square kilometres 1.545000 square miles was the first collection of realms to be defined as "the empire on which the sun never sets." Russell, Charles Lord; Russell, Matthew (Introduction); Meehan, Thomas Francis (Appendix); Herbermann, Charles George (Editor)
Diary of a Visit to the United States of America in the Year 1883 United States Catholic Historical Society
New York: The United States Catholic Historical Society 1910. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 0x0x0. Former church library copy St. Bernard's Seminary Library - usual marks. No jacket. 1910 Hard Cover. 235 pp. Charles Russell Baron Russell born November 10 1832 Newry County Down Irelandâdied August 10 1900 London England lord chief justice of England from June 1894 until his death. A formidable courtroom advocate he became widely admired as a strong but moderate judge. Russell practiced law in Ireland from 1854 and in England usually at Liverpool from 1859. In 1872 he was appointed a queenâs counsel. A Liberal Party member of the House of Commons from 1880 to 1894 he served as attorney general under Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone in 1886 and again in 1892â94. Although he was sympathetic to Irish nationalism he urged the establishment of an Irish Parliament subordinate to Englandâs rather than the granting of Home Rule which would have given the Irish wider power. In 1888â90 he gained fame as principal defense counsel before the Parnell Commission by discrediting much of the testimony against the Irish nationalist leader Charles Stewart Parnell especially that based on a letter forged by a journalist Richard Pigott. Created a lord of appeal in May 1894 Russell then was appointed lord chief justice of England on the death of John Duke Baron Coleridge June 14 1894. Price sticker or something similar stuck to rear of frontispiece was removed roughly and has thinned the page of the frontispiece without breaking through but the stain has offset to the page before the frontispiece. Another price sticker was successfully removed from the front free endpaper but its stain affects the front pastedown and the verso of the front free endpaper. Finally a third sticker on the verso margin of the colophon page has bled through to the blank margins of the colophon page as well as to its facing page the verso of the front free endpaper. Essentially there are 3 sticker stains all on blank areas of the preliminary leaves. The book is partially unopened and very good with foxed spineThe slipcase is present and while it has tears there is no splitting of the joints. A very acceptable copy of an uncommon book signed by both Sandburg and Angle.; Small 4to 8 1/2 x 11; 357 pp . Harcourt, Brace & Company hardcover books
