From a contemporary review: "The books were indeed all English and most of them in English and printed in England. The few exceptions books by English writers published abroad or foreign books bound in England even one Scotch book were no less interesting. There was predictably a good quantity of remarkable bindings from the ex-Friedlaender 1478 Lactantius suggestively a Cologne imprint in a contemporary Oxford binding possibly bought there by a monk of Fountains Abbey to a spectacular Ogilby's Vergil in apparently Dutch contemporary red morocco. Others included a Common Prayer and the dedication copy to Charles II of Webb's Vindication of Stone-Heng Restored 1665 both in red morocco by the 'Royal Heads' binder which though fine indeed were outdistanced by another pair of Restoration bindings in black morocco by Thomas Dawson of Cambridge an Eikon Basilike 1649 Cowley Works 1674. Two particularly fascinating books Lyndewodc Provinciate 1506 in a contemporary Oxford 'HS' binding and Philemon Holland's 1603 Plutarch bound for Frances Walsingham as Countess of Essex d. 1632 were strangely linked in common ownership by William Hall of the Middle Temple who dated the first '1633' There were some fine Association copies too: Stirling Recreations with the Muses 1637 with the portrait inscribed to Francis Kynaston a scribal manuscript of his 'Concerning Artificial mounts' inscribed by Browne to Dugdale and the folio Phillips Poems 1667 in contemporary black morocco with a pedigree reaching temptingly close to the matchless Orinda's patron the Countess of Cork. Other plums included a set of 12mo pious tracts all C1592-5 all but one unrecorded bound in red morocco two fascinating woodcut books Carter The Tomb-Stone 1650 and Ryley Funerall of the . . . Earle of Essex 1646 coloured Hamlet 1676 'the seventh separate' but 'most important procurable edition' the ex-Doheny Wynkyn de Worde; Appulby The anker of London wall 1530 and the Parthenicon 1607 of Elizabeth Jane Weston unkindly described as 'Our Greatest Forgotten Female Poet'. From the introduction: "To the casual reader this catalogue may well seem to be just another collection of sixteenth- and seventeenth - century theology with a sprinkling of history and politics. As such it may not appear particularly exciting.In introducing this the largest collection of STC and Wing theology indeed the largest private collection of STC and Wing books tout court to have appeared for sale for over twenty years - the Fairfax collection of Civil War tracts sold in 1993 was large in number but narrow in scope - it seems appropriate to begin with a short apologia. In case you were wondering why you should be interested in these books here are a few reasons why. Many of the books in this catalogue were the bestsellers of their day constantly reprinted sometimes for a century or more. Aids to Biblical study predominate naturally such as The Doctrine of the Bible 34 known editions between 1602 and 1726. But there are many others: devotional books like Hayward's Sanctuarie of a Troubled Soule 14 editions between 1600 and 1650 emblem books like Drexels' Considerations upon Eternity 21 editions between 1632 and 1724 treatises on the art of dying like Sutton's Disce Mori 10 editions between 1610 and 1662 practical manuals like A Week's Preparation towards a worthy receiving the Lords Supper 40 editions between 1678 and 1725. As scholars are now beginning to appreciate these works have a great deal to tell us about social history the history of reading habits and the history of the book trade.Even the catch-all term "theology" hardly does justice to the extraordinary variety of this collection. . But there is much more besides: nonconformist godly biographies like Theodosia Alleine's Life of her husband Joseph Alleine 1673 or Edmund Calamy's funeral sermon for Mrs Elizabeth Moore 1678 hugely popular and consequently rare; educational treatises like Richard Greenham's Godly Exhortation to Vertuous parents and Modest Matrons 1584. As these examples will indicate there are also many works by and about early modern women. And while the focus of the collection is on religion and theology there are other subjects as well including a significant number of law books with an emphasis on the more popular handbooks not to mention sheer oddities like An Hundred Severall Flowers c. 1620 a fascinating archaic and unique treasury of proverbial wisdom.
