The boards are rubbed with a few chips to the marbled paper. Spine lightly sunned with a touch of wear to the joints which are otherwise strong and tight. Evidence of removal of bookplate to inside front board. Hinges tight. Contents very clean. A handsome copy in good plus condition. Louys 1870-1925 was a French poet and novelist. Born in Ghent he moved to Paris where in 1891 he founded a review called 'Le Conque' to which many of the most famous French authors of the day contributed. In this journal he printed his first poems many of which later appeared in 'Astarte' 1891. His lyrics based on the Greek form which he so much admired are masterpieces of style. In 1896 this novel was published to great success by Librairie Borel. See Larousse Dict. of Writers. Our copy was first published in 1902. Editions Jules Tallandier hardcover

"Aphrodite: Ancient Manners" is a description of courtesan life in Alexandria by French poet and writer Pierre Louÿs 1870 - 1925 who is best known for the classical and lesbian themes in some of his writings. The book became an instant success when in was published in 1896 and became the subject of several editions including this privately-printed edition accompanied by the a fanciful nude by Clara Tice 1888 - 1973 whom Vanity Fair dubbed "The Queen of Greenwich Village". Tice drew racy illustrations at a time when ladies did not engage in such things and when Anthony Comstock's Society for the Suppression of Vice was very active. Tice attracted their unwanted attention for one of her early exhibitions at Polly's Restaurant in Greenwich Village in 1915 and it helped to jump-start her career. According to The New York Times 27 June 1920 she was the first woman in Greenwich village to bob her hair. Superbly bound by the CLUB BINDERY in full black crushed morocco with elaborate gilt concentric geometric design pattern consisting of isolated rectangles in quadruple filet gilt ruling and with leaf and blossom pattern at four corners on both covers and spine. Wide dentelles with similar design and ruling and with THE CLUB BINDERY 1902 stamped in gilt at lower dentelle. This is 1 of only 20 copies the first 10 contained an original watercolor by Caruchet of the rare Japan Vellum edition where the entire book has been masterfully hand-colored in subtle and aesthetic watercolor by the artist Henri Caruchet AND with an extra suite of illustrations in black and white on China paper each preceding the colored plate. These illustrations by Caruchet represent the zenith of turn of the century art nouveau in Europe and the quality of reproduction is of the highest quality. From the library of bibliophile and long-standing Grolier Club member David Allen Fraser 1911-2003. The binding and contents are extremely fine with only the slightest scuff to rear panel. A. Twelve plates generally attributed to Jean Berque these being delicately erotic scenes heightened by hand in colour. Five songs which had supposedly been omitted from the original Chansons de Bilitis but whose authorship has been questioned with the suggestion that they are in fact the work of Pascal Pia.Out of a total edition of 99 numbered copies ''sur papier pur fil � la forme'' this is one of the 48 published without the extra suites. Paris: Les Editions de l'Ibis 1972-73. Deluxe limited Ibis edition of the works of Pierre Louÿs. Quartos 6 volumes bound in full red pebbled morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands elaborate gilt ruling to the panels top edges gilt pictorial endpapers with 12 original colored lithographs per volume by Brenot and others. Limited edition one of 1572 sets produced. In near fine condition. Exquisitely illustrated. Through his writings Louÿs sought to "express pagan sensuality with stylistic perfection." Perhaps his best-known work Les Chansons de Bilitis is a collection of erotic essentially lesbian poetry first published in 1894. The work is considered a pseudotranslation as Louÿs claimed it to be his translation of the original poems of Bilitis a courtesan of Sappho in Ancient Greece. The work was eventually exposed as a literary fraud this did little however to taint its literary value as an open celebration of lesbian sexuality. Les Editions de l'Ibis hardcover
