Claimed to have been translated from Ancient Greek of a courtesan named Billitis contemporary to Sappho they are actually clever fabulations by Louys himself and they are considered important literature. The poems are a blend of mellow sensuality and polished style in the manner of Parnassianism with subtle Gallic undertones characteristic of the author's writing. Illustrated with five erotic illustrations in colour by Lobel Riche. Rebound in half morocco binding with the original wraps and spine bound in with the volume. One of four volumes in the eighteenth collection released by the publisher as part of "L'Ecrin Secret du Bibliophile" series. No. 180 of 1500. "Les Chansons Secretes de Bilitis" was first published in 1894 by Belgian eroticist Pierre Louys who presented the poems as a collection by an ancient Greek courtesan and contemporary of Sappho named Bilitis. The collection is presented in three cycles "Bucoliques en Pamphilie" poems of Bilitis' childhood and first love "Elegies a Lesbos" of her homosexual exploration and "Epigrammes dans l'ile de Chypre" of Bilitis' later life as a writer and courtesan. Though Bilitis is not a real historical figure Louys' fabulations occupy an important place in LGBTQ history as the namesake for the first American lesbian civil rights organization Daughters of Bilitis. Chicago: Argus Books. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. A very beautiful copy of this limited edition. The book itself is virtually without flaw. I'm sure there is one but I don't see it. Some of the pages have not been cut. This book was printed on top quality paper which has aged to a creamy ivory. All plates are present with tissue guards. The top edge is gilded. The jacket which is made of parchment has slight edgewear a small closed tear at the back and the spine has tanned. Normally I would put a mylar Brodart cover on such a jacket but the slipcase is also present and if Brodarted the book would not fit in to it. The slipcase is sound but with some wear to the edges.
