A large handbill accusing the Jews of subverting Christianity through “many long years of insidious infiltration.†The Jews are described as the “SPIRITUAL DESCENDANTS†of the Pharisees although racially they are mongrelized Asiatic KHAZARS making them PROSELYTE Pharisees ‘twice the sons of Hell’.â€<br /> <br /> Issued by the Christian Patriots Crusade CPC which was essentially a one-man paper organization founded by Forrest Allen Mann Jr. in 1956 as the American Christian Patriots Party. Mann published a newsletter "The Revere" that was racist anti-Semitic and pro-Arab and maintained close ties with many prominent nationalist organizations such as the National States Rights Party the Ku Klux Klan We the Mothers Mobilize for America and the National Renaissance Party. He was under FBI surveillance until 1960 when the CPC appears to have disbanded. <br /> <br /> Printed on one side of an 8 ½†x 6 ½†sheet one illustration. A fine copy. A sound fresh copy with split at front upper joint chip at tail minor dirt to wraps but internally clean: Very Good. <br /> <br /> Five pamphlets on Horace Mann's 1844 annual report to the Board of Education including two presentation copies of different editions of the report itself and three responses. Mann had toured Europe with his new wife Mary Peabody and friend Samuel Gridley Howe and studied schools in eight countries with special interest in the Prussian school system. His 1844 annual report comparing American and European school systems was received with great offense by Boston schoolteachers. "A group of thirty-one schoolmasters. . . published a sharply worded critique of his seventh Annual Report" targeting "Mann's recommendations for teacher training as well as his opposition to corporal punishment." However this group "soon faced Mann's wrath in the form of written rejoinders" and were ultimately vanquished when "Mann's allies were elected to the Boston School Committee." <br /> <br /> Despite the controversy Mann's efforts to "merge the best that he found in European educational systems with the principles of the growing American common school movement" saw remarkable success. Under his direction the Board of Education spent over $2 million on improved school buildings increased teacher salaries by over 50% opened fifty new high schools commissioned uniform school textbooks from Boston publishers and alotted time for student exercise-shaping the public school system as we know it ANB. Good. <br /> <br /> In 1832 and 1833 Pennsylvania conducted a marathon contest for the election of U.S. Senator chosen in those days by the legislature of each State. The term of Senator George Dallas came to an end in March 1833. "The Pennsylvania General Assembly consisting of the House of Representatives and the Senate convened on December 11 1832 for the regularly scheduled Senate election for the term beginning on March 4 1833. A total of thirty-six ballots were recorded. Ballots 1-17 were recorded on four separate dates 11th 12th 13th 15th in December 1832. Ballots 18-21 were recorded on two separate dates 9th and 10th in January 1833. Ballots 22-29 were recorded on two separate dates 19th and 20th in February 1833. The thirtieth ballot was recorded on March 12 1833 followed by three additional ballots on April 2. The Letter's recipient Samuel M. Barclay 1802-1852 was a Bedford lawyer. He was admitted to the bar in August 1826; elected as a Whig to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1833; and to the state Senate in 1837 Website of the Pennsylvania State Senate. Job Mann 1795-1873 appears to have been a cousin of David Mann. He was a Jacksonian member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania from 1835-1837 and a Democratic member from 1847-1851. This is a delightful book that draws together letters and writings of Morris Elizabeth Yeats and George Bernard Shaw taken from a collection at the Ellen Clarke Bertrand Library at Bucknell University. In his introduction Dr. Charles W. Mann describes the letters of Morris Elizabeth and W.B. Yeats as the "active engaged thoughts and hopes of some of the most gifted literary bookmakers of their time." The letters offer new insights into the relationship of W.B. Yeats to his sister Elizabeth's Cuala Press and the role of T.J. Cobden-Sanderson in the binding of Kelmscott Press books. Morris's close friend Shaw is represented by his wonderful essay 'The Author's View: A Criticism of Modern Book Printing." Linda Holmes provided 10 charming wood engravings. Eleanor Roosevelt's copy #6 of 150 copies signed by each of the ten authors on the limitation page tipped in at front: Thomas Mann Rebecca West Sigrid Undset Andre Maurois and six others. xiii 1 488 pp. Custom bound in chestnut polished calf stamped in gilt on spine boards and turn-ins; Roosevelt's name stamped on front board. Not signed or inscribed by her though. All edges gilt maroon morocco title label to spine printed endpapers maroon ribbon marker. Very Good with light rubbing to extremities and heavy chipping to title label; front joint starting at upper end. Light scattered stains to fly-leaves; contents overall clean binding firm. Buergin 568.<br /> <br /> <p>In the summer of 1942 the Austrian refugee and music publisher Armin L. Robinson invited ten prestigious writers to work on a new project: an anti-fascist propaganda film that would demonstrate that Nazi ideology violated each of the Ten Commandments. The deal with Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer fell through so Robinson decided to continue the project as a collection of ten novellas. Each writer took one amendment with Thomas Mann leading the charge:<br /> <br /> <p>1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thomas Mann.<br /> <br> 2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. Rebecca West.<br /> <br> 3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Franz Werfel.<br /> <br> 4. Remember to keep the sabbath day to keep it holy. John Erskine.<br /> <br> 5. Honour thy father and thy mother. Bruno Frank.<br /> <br> 6. Thou shalt not kill. Jules Romains.<br /> <br> 7. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Andre Maurois.<br /> <br> 8. Thou shalt not steal. Sigrid Undset.<br /> <br> 9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Hendrik Willem Van Loon.<br /> <br> 10. Thou shalt not covet. Louis Bromfeld.<br /> <br /> <p>The book was published in December 1943. Reviewers felt that the collection was uneven and overly long but still found much to praise particularly in Mann's contribution. They all felt the moral imperative of anti-Nazi writing: "Here the world's pen is raised against the sword of the super-race" wrote the New York Times. Four years into the war it had become clear that Hitler's conquest of Europe went well beyond territorial expansion and was an assault on civilization itself. <br /> <br /> <p>It is no surprise that Eleanor Roosevelt should own a copy of this limited edition the text of which is taken from the third trade printing. Apart from being married to Hitler's chief opponent Eleanor was an activist whose positive newspaper review of Mann's 1938 book The Coming Victory of Democracy had aided its success with the American public. The Roosevelts received Thomas Mann and his wife at the White House in 1941 and Mann who admired the President's values and speechmaking gave a speech on behalf of his reelection campaign in 1944. This copy of The Ten Commandments bound for the First Lady's personal library is a tribute to the shared principles of those towering figures. Simon and Schuster unknown

1851 Letter from William Mann Mexican War Veteran requesting pension attorney Col. William S. Amweg for his help in obtaining funds for his military service
Georgetown: n/a 1851. Letter. Good. Letter. Approx. 8" x 10". 1 page of writing. Paper previously removed from a glass frame. Tissue repairs on the edges. Paper has multiple folds. According to a note found on the back of the glass frame William Mann addressed this letter to Col. William S. Amweg a pension attorney near Lancaster Pennsylvania area in the years 1849-1851. The number 200 is written top of the paper. Unfortunately the note affixed to the back of the frame is now missing. Col. Amweg's name is not found in this document.<br /> <br /> The letter transcribed as best as possible reads: "Georgetown June 8 1851 Sir Having heard not reading that there was an appropriation being made for the last legislative body appropriating a sum of $30000 dollars for defraying the expenses of the First & Second Pennsylvania volunteers in Mexico and not being to the whole circumstance belonging to the Co. of First Pennsylvania Ridgement under Colonel Wincape and Lt. Col. Samuel Black therefore I wish you to intercede for me and lose nothing. I have great acquaintances in your place Rea Frarer Jones B. Canfuier Dr. Casally &c. which will certify that I was there. Reece was there also. The reference would be to Brigadier General John Bennet of Philadelphia who was my captain in Mexico and who would be a friend in need. Just ask for I cannot say much at present but request an answer respecting these things and oblige yours most respectively William Mann. P.S. I would inform you that when I landed in Philadelphia I was sickly and destitute of friends that I sold my discharge papers for the sake of getting home decently and therefore have no certificate to show but making reference to General Bennet Jr. can be had nothing more at present but remain yours &c William Mann.
