The front board has been reattached and the binding is solid. <br> Horace Mann was one of the most important figures in the development of universal non-sectarian free education in America. His six reforming principles forms the nucleus of American educational values: 1. the public should no longer remain ignorant; 2. that such education should be paid for controlled and sustained by an interested public; 3. that this education will be best provided in schools that embrace children from a variety of backgrounds; 4. that this education must be non-sectarian; 5. that this education must be taught using the tenets of a free society; and that education should be provided by well-trained professional teachers. Significantly Mann attempted to bring children of all classes together and better equalize the conditions of men. The Seventh Annual Report of the Massachusetts Board of Education included Mann's innovative findings from visits to schools in Europe particularly Prussia Saxony and Holland which Mann felt were superior to those of Massachusetts. The report proposed instruction for the blind deaf and dumb; modes of teaching children to read; the use of text books; and the abandonment of corporal punishment as a primary means of maintaining school discipline. Suliot d. 1871. Both men originally from Liverpool shared careers in education with Suliot teaching in Europe and later in Ohio.</p> <p>In 1843 funded by the Massachusetts Board of Education but at his own expense Horace Mann traveled to Europe focusing on German schools. His findings published in his seventh annual report appeared in multiple editions across Massachusetts other U.S. states and England. </p> <p>In his preface W.B. Hodgson explained that this 1846 edition of Mann’s Report aimed to show Europeans how Americans perceived European education stating it’s “important for us in Europe to know what value an intelligent American places on our labours.†Hodgson also highlighted Mann’s clear unbiased judgment asserting its value for European readers. Washington DC: Gideon and Co 1850. 1st Edition. Disbound. Fair. 15p. DISBOUND. Text of a speech removed from a larger volume with fragments of binding thread still in the spine fold. Edges heavily worn top left corner torn not affecting text itself. Corners crumpled horizintal creases in pamphlet as a whole and pages foxed. Text unmarked except for a faint notation on the title page. Much-worn but readable and complete. Though best remembered as an education reformer and staunch advocate for public schools Horace Mann 1796-1859 was also a vocal abolitionist. In this speech Mann argues against the extension of slavery into the western territories as well as the obligation of free states to return escaped slaves to their masters. The Compromise of 1850 which included the controversial Fugitive Slave Act would be passed into law only 7 months after Mann delivered this speech. Gideon and Co unknown
