En su obra de teatro Fiorenza montada en nuestro pa�s en 1993 por Juan Jos� Gurrola Thomas Mann teje de manera gradual un dram�tico enfrentamiento entre el Prior de San Marcos Jer�nimo Savonarola y Lorenzo de M�dici el Magn�fico. Alrededor de ellos gravita una corte de artistas y pensadores como Pico de la Mirandola y Marsilio Ficino as� como el cardenal Juan Hijo de Lorenzo y futuro Papa Le�n X. El tema de trasfondo es la lucha entre virtud representada por Savonarola y su creciente popularidad en la Florencia renacentista del siglo XV con sus arengas contra la corrupci�n y podredumbre de una ciudad entregada al placer y belleza encarnada en Lorenzo y su obsesi�n por el arte. En medio de la lucha se encuentra la hermosa Fiore amante de Lorenzo y blanco de ataques de Savonarola como alegor�a de la belleza y de la decadencia de la propia ciudad. En el di�logo entre los antagonistas Lorenzo pregunta: ��Debemos ver el mundo dividido en dos mitades hostiles �Usted dice que el esp�ritu y la belleza se oponen�. A lo que Savonarola responde: �Son opuestos sostengo la verdad que he padecido. �Quiere usted una prueba que le demuestre que estos dos mundos son irreconciliables y eternamente extra�os uno al otro El deseo. �Lo conoce Donde se abren abismos los une con su arco iris y donde existe abre abismos�. Mann plasm� a la perfecci�n los resortes del poder ya sea que se sustente en categor�as terrenales o espirituales ya sea que glorifique el placer de los sentidos o la elevada renuncia que pretende purificar el alma. Al final Savonarola y Lorenzo se revelan como dobles opuestos y el triunfo temporal del primero mostrar�a con los a�os su car�cter ef�mero. Fiore insta al Prior de San Marcos a abandonar el poder y comportarse como un verdadero monje a quien Mann hace responder con una magistral frase que bien podr�a sintetizar la voluntad que mueve a los poderosos: �Amo el fuego�.
