Un testo che poi restrospettivamente ha pesato sul giudizio riguardo la sua posizione verso il nazismo considerata per certi aspetti ambigua mentre nel saggio scritto durante il primo viaggio in America - Traversata con Don Chisciotte riedito l'anno scorso da Medusa -il giudizio verso il Nazionalsocialismo traspare senz'ombre. Che cosa � cambiato nel frattempo in Mann I saggi compresi in questo libro ci svelano la lenta ma costante evoluzione del giudizio su Goethe come esponente della borghesia tedesca e precursore del pensiero della democrazia. � anche una specie di autoritratto intellettuale Gli anni tra le due guerre sono decisivi nella maturazione del pensiero di Mann il quale abbraccia una visione di moderata fiduciosa apertura alla cultura democratica. E su questa strada la frequentazione del Maestro del Werther del Wilhelm Meister e del Faust � sempre pi� stretta come se Mann dovesse prendere dalle mani di Goethe il testimone di interprete della coscienza civile germanica. La strada maestra che lo porter� a comprendere le ragioni della democrazia - progresso che i saggi qui raccolti mettono bene in evidenza - passa dalla contrapposizione fra amore della morte e amore della vita. In quegli anni cruciali per l'Europa Mann arriva a dire che il popolo tedesco � affascinato dalla morte mentre per Goethe �l'ultima parola contro la morte e per la vita rimane: "Non si tratta infine che di andare avanti"�. Non lascia molti dubbi sulla posizione di Mann questa lettura di Goethe che diventa implicito giudizio sulla Germania hitleriana. Edizioni Medusa unknown
