br. Di nessun altro uomo vissuto prima di Petrarca abbiamo una così vasta messe di informazioni biografiche, diceva Ernest H. Wilkins. Ma precisava che tali informazioni si fondano per lo più su lettere e altri scritti petrarcheschi. Bisognerà allora chiedersi: che cosa sappiamo di lui con certezza? La verità è che ogni scrittore mira a diventare, per usare le parole di Ortegay Gasset, "romanziere di se stesso, originale o plagiario". E, come dimostra l'affascinante indagine di Francisco Rico, Petrarca non sfugge alla regola: anzi, la incarna in sommo grado. Il che significa non solo che l'autoritratto che egli va componendo nel tempo è ispirato a exempla illustri, ma che nulla di quanto ci dice è letterale e innocente. Dietro ogni data, dietro la semplice menzione di un giorno della settimana (il venerdì, ad esempio, giorno marcato per eccellenza), si cela una fitta rete di rispondenze, una raffinata simbologia e un audace disegno: trasformare i momenti vissuti o immaginati in frammenti di un racconto unitario capace di sottrarli alla corrosione del tempo. Ma Petrarca si spinge ancora più in là nella costruzione di un'esistenza ideale: grazie a Rico, lo vediamo infatti applicare la 'dispositio' persino alla vita non scritta, modellarla come un testo, mettendo in atto ciò che non scrive - o, se vogliamo, facendo letteratura con le proprie azioni.

Attraverso queste parole, scritte in risposta a un'epistola "giocosa" di Giacomo Colonna -, lettera, forse, fittizia, senz'altro, se vera, quanto mai impertinente (perché indagatrice dell'animo e di tutte le figurazioni di sé create dal poeta, ma anche filosofo e storico) - Francesco Petrarca consegna un'immagine di sé unica, ideale, che diventerà il vessillo della sua esistenza terrena e letteraria. Un'esistenza condotta cercando di combattere, di convivere, di tesaurizzare - per quanto possibile - l'eterno male dell'uomo: la tragica fluctuatio dell'animo. L'intento di questo volume è attraversare la produzione letteraria di Petrarca cercando di seguire il fil rouge rappresentato dalle immagini afferenti alla pervasiva tematica relativa al concetto (tre le figure principali esaminate: altercatio, navigatio e peregrinalo, a cui si aggiunge la Visio). Si tratta di un campo frequentato dalla critica, ma di cui mancano studi di natura sistematica. Dall'indagine ne emerge un Petrarca impegnato, stante gli insegnamenti della filosofia classica e cristiana, a contrastare quel malevole sentito, che è di fatto la macchina creatrice della poesia di ogni tempo.
