Costante in tutti e due gli scrittori è il comune rapporto con gli studi e con i libri, classici e moderni, intesi come fondamentali strumenti dell'impegno culturale e del programma letterario a cui entrambi si rifanno. Sono anni decisivi per il rinnovo e per la riforma intellettuale, singola e collettiva, rispetto alle epoche precedenti nella formazione e nel compimento delle nuove realizzazioni dotte e ricercate. In tal senso sia Petrarca sia Boccaccio idealmente si rifanno al Parnaso, anche se mai sono saliti su questo monte della Grecia: ma famoso, nella mitologia classica, perché simbolo della poesia, consacrato al culto di Apollo e ritenuto sede delle Muse. La «vita terrentii» de Petrarca
Íñigo Ruiz Arzálluz ricostruisce in questo volume la storia della trasmissione manoscritta della Vita Terrentii di Petrarca, breve saggio scritto, probabilmente intorno al 1340, in occasione di una edizione delle commedie di Terenzio. Il testo, frutto di un'operazione filologica tipicamente petrarchesca, non è una semplice introduzione alla vita e all'opera del commediografo, ma un'interpretazione originale e diversa dagli altri scritti coevi dedicati all'autore latino. Si tratta di un documento molto importante anche perché non abbiamo notizia di scritti simili del poeta aretino su nessun altro autore antico. Un caso editoriale del tutto eccezionale: nessuno degli oltre ottanta manoscritti della Vita Terrentii che sono stati tramandati contiene altri scritti di Petrarca.
