Francesco Petrarca is best known as one of the first writers to experiment with the Italian vernacular for poetic expression. For his letters however he relied on the lingua franca of Latin developing a sophisticated yet intimate style that returned to the more classical forms of Virgil and above all Cicero. In these letters & addressed with fine impartiality to friends poets and illustrious men both living and dead including Cicero and Homer & Petrarch ranges over a variety of subjects yet always exhibits an earnest striving for greatness of spirit together with a sometimes rueful acknowledgment of his own shortcomings. Passages from his letters were selected and translated by Miss Johanna Lohse 1839-1911 in Florence and published in 1900 in a charming pocket-sized edition by J. M. Dent & Co. in London. Peter Bishop chose this unusual volume now rare to be the first publication of the newly revived Petrarch Press. Volume I with the very fine and beautifully portrait engraved on copper by Raffaello Morghen based on a design by Arturo Tofanelli imprinted by Luigi Bardi. The text in a fine and handsome Bodoniesque typography of the Amoretti Brothers of Parma. Folio 40 by 26 cm approx in fine contemporary Italian three-quarter vellum over ginger textured cloth boards. The spine is richly gilt tooled between softly-sloped raised bands in a fine lattice and botanic motif two of the compartments with boldly gilt lettered and tooled brown morocco labels additional fine gilt-work along the edges of backings and cornerpieces fine marbled endpapers and t.e.g. Attractive engraved armoiral plate to the front pastedown. xxii 352; 2 368 pp. A very regal and handsome set the bindings elegant with some unobtrusive age mellowing to the vellum and textured cloth the leather labels a bit rubbed. Internally both volumes are sound and sturdy the hinges fine and tight. The text with some light spotting to which the paper is prone this copy less than is typical and always quite mild. ONE OF THE FINEST PRINTINGS OF THE GREAT ITALIAN POET THIS BY THE AMORETTI BROTHERS WHO HAD STUDIED UNDER BODONI. GAMBA STATES THIS SUMPTUOUS EDITION TO BE OF NO LESSER QUALITY THAN BODONI PRINTINGS.<br> One of the "great triumvirate" of Italian poets Francesco Petrarch's sonnets were admired and imitated throughout Europe during the Renaissance and they served as the model for nearly all later Western lyrical poetry. He was also the first true reviver of learning in Medieval Europe. He was a great student of the classical works-- histories poetry law and orations and he included in his studies many ancient books and manuscripts that the medieval period had ignored for nearly a millennium. He also closely followed the politics and learning of his own age. Francesco Petrarca July 20 1304 – July 19 1374 commonly anglicized as Petrarch was an Italian scholar and poet in Renaissance Italy and one of the earliest humanists. Petrarch's rediscovery of Cicero's letters is often credited for initiating the 14th-century Renaissance. Petrarch is often called the "Father of Humanism". In the 16th century Pietro Bembo created the model for the modern Italian language based on Petrarch's works as well as those of Giovanni Boccaccio and to a lesser extent Dante Alighieri. Petrarch would be later endorsed as a model for Italian style by the Accademia della Crusca. Petrarch's sonnets were admired and imitated throughout Europe during the Renaissance and became a model for lyrical poetry. He is also known for being the first to develop the concept of the "Dark Ages." This standing back from his time was possible because he straddled two worlds - the classical and his own modern day. Wikipedia ___________________________ Susannah Dobson née Dawson died 1795 was an English translator from the south of England. The daughter of John Dawson of the parish of St Dunstan London she married in 1759 a physician Dr Matthew Dobson of Liverpool who died at Bath Somerset in 1784. They had three children. Frances Burney mentions that in 1780 Susannah Dobson was ambitious to get into Mrs Thrale's circle but the latter was not keen: "Mrs DobsonÂ… persecutes me strangely as if with violent & undesired Friendship; yet Mrs Lewis says She is jealous." A modern view of what Thrale wrote in Thraliana is that it implied Dobson was a lesbian. Burney wrote of her "Though coarse low-bred forward self-sufficient and flaunting she seems to have a strong masculine understanding." Dr Dobson had become Mrs Thrale's physician.
