Es sind achtzehn Briefe eines fiktiven Paris-Reisenden namens Montalte von denen die ersten zehn an einen fiktiven Freund in der heimatlichen Provinz gerichtet sind die nächsten sechs an die Pariser Jesuitenpatres insgesamt und die letzten beiden speziell an den Beichtvater des Königs. In diesen Briefen beschreibt Montalte zunächst in der Rolle eines theologisch unbeschlagenen und naiven jungen Adeligen wie Jesuiten ihm altklug und herablassend ihre Theologie erklären; später nachdem er quasi seine Lektion gelernt hat beginnt er mit ihnen zu diskutieren und so scharfsinnig wie witzig ihre Lehren ad absurdum zu führen. Pascal persiflierte und attackierte so die zwar gewissermaßen verbraucherfreundliche aber tendenziell opportunistische und oft spitzfindige Theologie – die berühmte Kasuistik – der Jesuiten und entlarvte ihren sehr weltlichen Machthunger. Die «Lettres provinciales» hatten obwohl sie nach der Nr. 5 verboten wurden bei Erscheinen der Buchausgabe auf den Index kamen und 1660 sogar vom Henker verbrannt wurden großen und langandauernden Erfolg und bedeuteten längerfristig den Anfang vom Ende der Allmacht der Jesuiten zumindest in Frankreich. The rare first edition. �The Lettres provinciales Provincial letters are a series of eighteen letters written by French philosopher and theologian Blaise Pascal under the pseudonym Louis de Montalte. Written in the midst of the formulary controversy between the Jansenists and the Jesuits they are a defense of the Jansenist Antoine Arnauld from Port-Royal-des-Champs a friend of Pascal who in 1656 was condemned by the Facult� de Th�ologie at the Sorbonne in Paris for views that were claimed to be heretical. The First letter is dated January 23 1656 and the Eighteenth March 24 1657. A fragmentary Nineteenth letter is frequently included with the other eighteen. In these letters Pascal humorously attacked casuistry a rhetorical method often used by Jesuit theologians and accused Jesuits of moral laxity. Being quickly forced underground while writing the Provincial Letters Pascal pretended they were reports from a Parisian to a friend in the provinces on the moral and theological issues then exciting the intellectual and religious circles in the capital. In the letters Pascal's tone combines the fervor of a convert with the wit and polish of a man of the world. Their style meant that quite apart from their religious influence the Provincial Letters were popular as a literary work. Adding to that popularity was Pascal's use of humor mockery and satire in his arguments. The letters also influenced the prose of later French writers like Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Brilliantly written by Pascal the Provincial Letters would not have been possible without the work of theologians from Port-Royal; indeed most of the arguments Pascal deployed were already to be found in Arnauld's Th�ologie morale des J�suites something which led the Jesuit Nicolas Caussin to reply to Pascal's perceived libel. Pascal's main source on Jesuit casuistry was Antonio Escobar's Summula casuum conscientiae 1627 several propositions of which would be later condemned by Pope Innocent XI. Paradoxically the Provincial Letters were both a success and a defeat: a defeat on the political and theological level and a success on the moral level. Thus King Louis XIV ordered that the book be shredded and burnt in 1660. The final letter from Pascal in 1657 had defied the Pope himself provoking Alexander VII to condemn the letters. But that didn't stop most of educated France from reading them. Moreover even Pope Alexander while publicly opposing them nonetheless was persuaded by Pascal's arguments. Just a few years later 1665-66 and then 1679 Alexander condemned �laxity� in the church and ordered a revision of casuistical texts� Wikipedia partly after PMM. Contemporary full calf spines gilt to a floral motif in compartments between raised bands gilt-lettered red label marbled endpapers and edges. Extremities rubbed extensive ink inscription noticeably scratched out on title but otherwise a nice clean copy. Anonymously published in 1656-7 Pascal's series of 18 brilliant and witty letters were composed in defense of Antoine Arnauld and the Jansenists at Port-Royal against the attacks of the Jesuits of the Sorbonne. Pascal's devastating exposure of the casuistry and moral laxity of the Jesuits in contrast to the rigorous morality of the Jansenists failed to save Arnauld but did much to undermine Jesuit prestige and authority and establish the author's literary reputation. Referring to the Provinciales as one of the works that most influenced his writing Gibbon states that it was from Pascal he learned "to manage the weapon of grave and temperate irony even on subjects of ecclesiastical solemnity." Light brown stain to head margin of the last quarter of the leaves occasional faint browning or foxing elsewhere more conspicuous on final gathering minor worming in bottom margin of a few leaves otherwise a very good copy internally with nothing approaching a serious defect and in a pleasing unworn binding. In addition to related material normally not included this volume contains 17 of the rare original 19 separately issued letters or "Provinciales" by the French polymath Blaise Pascal 1623-62 a series characterized by PMM as "the first example of French prose as we know it today perfectly finished in form . . . on a subject of universal importance . . . and an expression of one of the finest intelligences of the seventeenth century." Prompted by the Jesuits' condemnation for heresy of Pascal's friend Antoine Arnauld the letters are "a magnificent sustained invective" PMM against the laxity and casuistry of his detractors and at the same time a defense of Jansenism that theological movement and faction within Catholicism that grew out of the writings of Dutch theologian Cornelius Jansen 1585-1638 and that emphasized many of the Calvinist tenets of faith human sinfulness lack of free will and the necessity of divine Grace. The additional material apparently collected from a variety of sources comprises letters Pascal wrote to parish priests seeking assistance with the controversy. There is also a copy of Noel de la Lane's "Recit de ce qui s'est Pass� au Parlement au Sujet de la Bulle de Nostre S. P�re le Pape Alexandre VII. contre les Censures de Sorbonne" ca. 1665. Pascal 1623-62 was a man of many attainments in several fields among them physics philosophy and mathematics. Above all he was a profound thinker a devout Christian and the creator of memorable prose. Written simply lucidly objectively and wittily the "Provinciales" represents a landmark in French literature an early expression of Enlightenment thinking. It was enormously successful dealt the Jesuits a fatal setback and influenced the prose of Voltaire and Rousseau. Not surprisingly the book was put on the Index and ordered to be burned. Originally printed clandestinely by various printers as separate publications at various times during 1656 and 1657 the series is bibliographically complicated but it is clear that our quarto format versions precede the duodecimo printing dated 1657 and obviously those editions with later dates. It is likely given the small parts we are missing that someone assembled the various letters found here as they were issued at the time. A complete set of these letters in first edition--which is rarely seen--would sell for a considerable amount of money. unknown
